Re: Regimental Centre List
dsandhu,
Did the 3/4 GR get the Siachen MVCs for repelling the Musharraf let SSG attack on bilafindla?
Re: Regimental Centre List
Bishwa
You are correct the 3/4 GR received the MVC for repelling the attacks on Bilafindla. If interested I have a brief account for the acts for which the MVC's were awarded.

Re: Regimental Centre List
I located some. Please post others if you have them.
Siachen is most highly decorated wasteland of earth. Two Indian Battalions have snatched the country’s biggest tally of gallantry medals. One PVC, and four Vir Chakras for eight JAKLI and three Mahavir Chakras and five Vir
Chakras for 3/4 Gorkha Rifles. (PTI)

1) The 3/4 Gorkha Rifles was deployed in the Siachen area in 1987. Lance Havildar Nar Bahadur
Ale commanded a machine gun detachment at this post.
The Pakistanis lauched a heavy artillery attack on the post on 23 september but were
driven back by accurate machine gun firing directed at them by the Lance Havildar.
The enemy came back the following night but they could not get past Nar Bahadur's death
spewing machine gun. An artillery shell hit the Lance Havildar and he started bleeding
profusely but he kept on firing. It was only at the end of teh battle that he let go of the
machine gun and then he fell down dead. Lance Havildar Nar Bahadur Ale was honoured with
the Mahavir Chakra for his death defying courage.
2) The 3/4 Gorkha Rifles was deployed in the Siachen area in 1987. On 23rd September, the
Pakistanis launched a fierce artillery offensive that killed the Indian Section Commander.
Naik Prem Bahadur Gurung took over the command and led his men in repelling the enemy
attacks. His bravery was inspiring as he ran twice to the platoon headquarters in the thick
of battle to return with the ammunintion. In thier second attack the next night, when the
enemy stood barely 50 meters away from the Indian post, Naik Gurung charged at them,
armed with Grenades and a rifle. He went on firing, until his ammunition ran out. Then he
unsheathed his Khukri and attacked the enemy, killing three PAkistani soldiers. However he
was fatally wounded when a retreating Pakistani soldier shot him in the chest. He
succumbed to his injuries soon after.
Naik Gurung was posthumously honoured with the Mahavir chakra.

[This message has been edited by bishwa (edited 05-10-2000).]
Re: Regimental Centre List
Some more info about the 3/4 GR MVc's at Siachen
3/4 GR was inducted into Siachen in Sep. 1987.A company under Maj. K.G. Chatterjee was asked to take over the defences of Bilafondla complex, which included the 3 forward posts called Saddle, 'U' Cut and Ashok. While taking over charge of this complex the 3/4 GR was subjected to heavy shelling on the morning of Sep. 21.
From the pattern of the shelling Maj. Chatterjee deduced that the main target was the AShok post. The attack came on the night of 23 Sep. Maj. Chatterjee directed artillery fire on enmy concentration, which broke up the assault. The enemy again and again attacked the post on 23 rd Sep. night. The defenders fought with determination and foiled each attempt. While directing these battles, Maj. Chatterjee was injured in the arm by an artillery shell splinter, but he refused evacuation and continued to motive his men.
The enmy again launched a major attack on the night of 24th Sep., this time in battalion strength. Maj. Chatterjee again motivated his men to repulse the attack. Two more attacks by the enemy were repulsed the same night.

MVC list conti.

Regiment of Artillery

Cap.
