South - Western Command : A Ready Reckoner
“Future battle will be characterised by the synergic employment of all Arms and Services across the entire spectrum of conflict in a nuclear, biological and chemeical (NBC) backdrop. Jointmanship, interdependence, interoperability and compatibility among the Services shall remain key battle-winning factors. It is with this in focus that the Indian Army has restructured to create its seventh command, namely South Western Command”, said Chief of the Army Staff, Gen JJ Singh while giving his consent to the formation sign for the newly raised South Western Command.
The South Western Command with headquarters at Jaipur is poised to bolster the capabilities of Indian Army, especially on the western frontiers. The inaugural ceremony was held with much fanfare and enthusiasm at Gothic Lines, Jaipur Military Station. It saw the participation of a number of senior officials from Army. Lt Gen K Nagaraj has been appointed to head the command. After the customary fanfare and general salute, the command flag was ceremoniously trooped in and blessed by Religious Teachers. The flag was, thereafter, hoisted by Lt Gen K Nagaraj. He also addressed the serving and retired personnel present on the occasion. He exhorted all ranks to play a key-role in the fulfilment of the objectives of the command. “Though we may be seventh in the precedence of rising but we shall ever be better than the best”, he asserted.

The retired officers present on the occasion included Admiral VS Shekhawat, Lt Gen K Surinder Singh, and Brig Bhawani Singh. The command insignia depicts a silver streak symbolizing offensive strike action, communication and information warfare. It is superimposed with a seven-point star, heralding the seventh.

What is that rightmost formation insignia behind Lt. Gen. Jamwal? Is it the 3rd Independent Armoured Brigade?
The others I am pretty sure of. Left to right: 2nd Independent Armoured Brigade, 26th Infantry Division, 9 Corps, and 29th Infantry Division.
On a related note, it seems that 9 Corps only got two out of the three independent armoured brigades from the old 16 Corps and that the new 16 Corps might have retained the third independent armoured brigade.

What kind of patches have that red background and what are those patches? I faintly recall that area commands have a red background but I am not sure about it.

What is the insignia on the maroon beret of the first person from the right? Is it the SFF? Also, is that a SFF shoulder tab on the person who is squating in the middle?
What are the two badges on the left chest pocket of the Para SF Major who is the second person from the right?

I was hoping to read the letterings on that. Is it an issue of resolution or is an issue of poor metallaurgy, I dont know?Jagan wrote:pargha,

I think both. Some of the original dies and casts used for making these may not have been made well. Most of these badges are supplied by private contractors and there is always a variation.ParGha wrote:

Are you sure the 14 Corps badge shown is correct?
I am asking this because I recently saw a jeep in Jaipur with that badge on it.

Correction Mr Sarabjit Singh IPS is the Former DGP Punjab and DG BPRD He was never DG Civil Defence. He has served with the SSB in Himachal and Arunachal in 1970.
When he was selected, he was just 21, the minimum age for joining civil services. He has worked in almost all areas of police service, including districts, range, intelligence, security, computerisation, training and operations. He is specially trained in guerrilla warfare. In 1988, he was awarded the President's Police Medal for meritorious service

Good one. (The AWACS patch)
BTW thanks to an avid collector David Zothanasunga, we should be able to complete the arm patch gallery on the land forces site - right now the Command and Corps badges are complete. Div and Area/Sub-Area are next. Institutions will be done last.

Re: Badges, Patches, Insignia, Medals & Uniforms
while on the subject - just wanted to point out a very well written historical review from ancient to modern times on a related topic :
THE INDIAN TRI COLOUR - LT CDR KV SINGH - RUPA - PUB 2006 Rs 295
around 300 pages , with many historical anecdotes and colour diagrams on the evolution of the national flag - highly recommended to buffs - and much more affordable than the Manohar tome.
the book chronicles how individuals like Madame Cama used flags to make their point. The Tiranga gets about five chapters tracing its genesis from the early freedom movement to its final shape today. Other chapters of interest are the flags of the erstwhile royal families and the one on the 2002 amendment to the Flag Code.
Chapters :
Dawn of Independence and the Tiranga
A young crusader liberates Tiranga
The World of Flags
The Ancient Indian Dhvajas
Flags of the Epic Era
Flags of Ancient, Medieval and modern India
Evolution of the Indian National-flag
Madame Cama and the National-flag
First Flag of the Freedom Movement
The Jhanda Andolan, 1923
Between the years 1924 and 1930
Flag Committee: 1931
The Official Flag of the Indian National Congress
India adopts her National-Flag
Specifications for the National-Flag of India
Amended Flag Code-India, 2002
Ordinary Citizens and the National-flag
Curious facts about the Tiranga
Display of Royal Flags by the Erstwhile
Princely States
Appendix 1 - Appendix 9
FLAG TERMS DEFINED

Both are as different from chalk and cheese. one is about medals, this one is about the indian flag, so why compare the two?highly recommended to buffs - and much more affordable than the Manohar tome.

Manohar published a tome on THE Indian flag ON SIMILAR LINES - AT DOUBLE THE PRICE
Re: Badges, Patches, Insignia, Medals & Uniforms
Is the quality of these two flag books the same? Many cheap and unresearched pieces of . . . non-scholarship . . . have come out on this topic and few of them are any good at all, just pieces of patriotic . . . fluff.
And I, too, cannot follow the comparison with our medals book.

Ed-ji,
Krishna was comparing it with the Manohar book on the Indian flag - not with yours (on the medals).
