IAF at Red Flag / Nellis AFB 2008
Re: IAF at Red Flag / Nellis AFB 2008
The above pictures are from Mountain Home AFB, Idaho, US See on Google Maps
Here's the direct link to the forum of Fence Check - enthusiasts from Mountain Home AFB who have posted their pictures online
http://www.fencecheck.com/forums/index. ... 90.30.html
Folks - they have a thread for the Nellis AFB also:
* under Exercises it will likely come up as Red Flag, they have the current Red Flag Exercise pictures
* as well as under Base Visits, Photocalls and Spotters Days there is a thread for "Nellis AFB"
Admins:
It may be worthwhile for BR to contact these folks who are posting their own pictures directly to see if BR could use their pictures.
There's a gentleman by the name Kedar who is also following along (likely the MKI), perhaps we could also get pictures from him. Just my 2c worth.

Re: IAF at Red Flag / Nellis AFB 2008
Just curious, how are they transporting the bombs to be used at Nellis? On the IL 76 with the personnel?? The sukhois are definitely not loaded.
Re: IAF at Red Flag / Nellis AFB 2008
Kedar is a lurker and he promised to post some pictures in the BR albums so keep your fingers crossed.Avid wrote:

It is rather sad that Shiv does not give credit to the Mountain Home AFB for those pictures.

At the bottom of his page he did mention Photos Courtesy US Air Force. That should sufficeAvid wrote:It is rather sad that Shiv does not give credit to the Mountain Home AFB for those pictures.

Check out the caption.
You can also soon expect to see the standard US Airforce exercise photo: USAF staff talking to IAF staff in the "gora giving SDRE heathens some gyaan" pose.
So Gp. Cpt. Ajay Rathore is an "air force pilot" who has somehow gotten an audience with the good Colonel/Fighter Wing Commander. What in the world happened to professional courtesy and respect?Indian air force pilot, Ajay Rathore, talks with Col. James Browne, 366th Fighter Wing commander,...

Re: IAF at Red Flag / Nellis AFB 2008
Inaccuracies in the Mountain Home AFB website. We are not the only ones to suffer from ddmitis:
An Indian air force SU-30K jet touches down
This is the first time in history the Indian air force has been on American soil to train with U.S. fighters
Re: IAF at Red Flag / Nellis AFB 2008
they may have made one mistake but we are being too fussy here. I actually find the americans give more attention to rank and names of people than we do ourselves. In many of their official photos - they give the name and rank of the non-officer personnel. - eg. Sgt XXX of IAF, or Cpl Y of INdian Army - something unheard of in Indian media and armed forces publicity photos.Raman wrote:Check out the caption.

Re: IAF at Red Flag / Nellis AFB 2008
Aw Shankar,
Saying so on BRF doesn't change it. Massa is not going to let the raptor exercise with us anytime soon. Its too private / personal to them right now.
Maybe when PAK-FA lands in india, then maybe.

Re: IAF at Red Flag / Nellis AFB 2008
Also it is written "Indian air force" and when referring to their own it is written as "U.S. Air Force". Apparently theirs is an official/formal institution and India's organisation is just a generic entity. I've noticed such writing in the past articles too in reference to the Indian Navy about joint naval exercises. Maybe subtle/subliminal message always being sent out to their own people and others.

Re: IAF at Red Flag / Nellis AFB 2008
Isn't the IRST supposed to be covered and is classified? Can't let just anyone photgraph it?
From the pennant numbers, these are the latest MKI's in service, the most advanced ones.

Red Flag will give IAF an opportunity to closely evaluate the Rafael in action.

A missile right next to the fuel tank, and that too up where the fuel tank connects with the wing, and where the lines are joined !

With a track record like the F-15, they can put the missile pretty much anywhere, if it works, don't trouble it...
Re: IAF at Red Flag / Nellis AFB 2008
Looks like our guys are in for a tough time in Nellis.I wonder if we have something back home which resembles the terrain they are going to be flying their missions on.I wonder how much is IAF willing to push the SUs.If I am not wrong..then the only infrastructure we have is the Maharajganj range.
Re: IAF at Red Flag / Nellis AFB 2008
So will IAF take part only in 'Air-To-Ground' exercises? That would be a bummer. But, then i guess its baby steps or did we have enough 'Air to Air' exposure in previous encounters?JaiS wrote:From Nellis AFB's website.

Re: IAF at Red Flag / Nellis AFB 2008
From a new magazine called Salute to the Indian Soldier. With the Red Flag in USA
Red Flag” offers a unique opportunity to imbibe lessons in an ever evolving aerial warfare canvas of ‘long range precision strike and beyond the visual range’ operations with the best
Mural
A retired Vice Chief of the Indian Air Force had once said “we don’t talk about top guns in the IAF but we have a knowledge culture and a will to do our best”. The three star Air Mrashal’s confidence only goes on to underscore, the Air Force’s quiet and professional determination to assess its potential at Exercise Red Flag, currently underway at the Nellis Air Force Base in USA, some time in July-August, 2008.
The Red Flag, is routine exercise, conducted regularly by the US. It is conceived for realistic combat training, involving the air forces of the US and its allies. It is an advanced training program administered by the US Air Warfare Center and Nellis, through their Combat Training Squadron. Although, India does not subscribe to this political division, the American invitation to India to participate undoubtedly, stems from a perception of the IAF’s potential as global war outfit. This is a formidable opportunity to imbibe lessons in an ever evolving aerial warfare canvas of ‘long range precision strike and beyond the visual range’ operations, among others. The Air Force has nominated a second generation combat pilot Group Captain Ajay Rathore as the exercise coordinator.
The IAF’s flying team will pitt their skills against the teams from South Korea, USA and the French Air Force and compete with the F-16’s, F-15’s and the French Rafael. The exercise format is within controlled parameters of time, accuracy, flight safety, maintenance and, to some extent, the ever growing considerations of inter-operability.
The nearly 250 strong Indian contingent, led by Group Captain D Chaudhury is participating with eight SU-30 MK-I multi role combat aircraft, two IL-78 air to air refuellers and one IL-76 transport aircraft. It has a small component of a Special Forces team, Garud, as well. The IAF Chief, Air Chief Marshal Fali Major took time off to see them off on their journey through bases in Qatar, Turkey, France and Portugal.
As this issue reaches our readers, the IAF team would have arrived at Mountain Home Air Base in Idaho, US on 17 Jul 08, where they will remain till 07 Aug 08. This is a preparatory stage to streamline procedures and have a clear understanding of the new flying environment. At Mountain Home, the IAF contingent would be flying with the F-16s & F-15s of US Air Force.

This is a magazine that is run by ex servicemen, mostly from the Indian Navy.
I found the write up more personalised than the usual third person stuff.
Re: IAF at Red Flag / Nellis AFB 2008
Someone help me understand what is going on in this picture:
(Edit: Now with specificity)
Edit: Wait, is that the third (or second) refuelling station? The picture almost makes it look like it is mounted on the main wing.
(Edit: Now with specificity)
What is that equipment? Does this kind of asymmetric layout have any affect aerodynamically and if yes, how do you counter that? Asymmetric thrust or continous rudder input?kakarat wrote:
