the reason why the soll missions were continued with the c141b was for the simple fact that more troops can successfully depart the aircraft. The c-17 powerplant is so powerful, that specially designed "scoops" are on the sides of the plane to deflect engine exhaust. WITHOUT these measures troops would have be blown away, instead of dropping. It took a few more years of training and design to get the Air Force, the results it needed for the current production model.
However the presentday C-17 is unmatched as a cargo plane, because it can be retrofited for humanitarian missions(the latest medical equipment operational in flight), cargo movement, military/sollmissions, and most important, it is maintained by a bus periph. system, with the latest advancements. I worked on C-5, C-17, C-141b, anything with wings as a avionics mechanic(2A452). Anyway, Im glad that India/Sri lanka and America are at a common ground to seriously consider this potential arrangement.
Im interested in how the Indian IT community will further advance the Bus system. This is the one plane, that could do everything, please keep that in mind. Boeing will always be the "Bugatti",in these matters, so why not the best?
