Samay, a humble request to you and other posters: Let us not go down this route of tactics and paraphernalia......because no one here, save for those have served in the IA and have been in CI Ops, can answer the question. And mind you, even they can only make an educated guess for cases like Sopore where they were not present.

I know that these questions are natural given the loss and the fact that one soldier lost in one too many. But let us not go down a route that none of us (barring the ex-IA members) even have an iota of undertanding.

Thank you.

This may bother a lot of people:

But just like a lot else in life just the epithet "special" or "piglet" does not mean anything in a real battle. it is ultimately man vs man on a given day , a given date and a given fate.

Just because somebody is an irregular terrorist/insurgent does not mean he is any less than a "special" soldier.

Typically people think- Piglet<Pak Army< Pak SSG. And then wail about tactics. I beg to differ.

A kashmiri/afghan boy from a farmer/ goatherd/ migrant family brought up in adverse hilly regions given a lot of training and then been in a number of firefights is not to be dismissed as an "ordinary" adversary.

You see everybody posting here ( well almost everybody) is mainly an urban kid. even the ex army types belonged to the "gentry" before they were hardened in the military.

Now many "special forces" around the world become so "special" that they never see any action and are only "rumoured" to have extra special tactics and capability. A mythos is built around them for propaganda value and states become scared to use them in actual combat. and in countries that they are used, combat deaths are often not reported to the extent they can be.

On the other hand our SF like Para/ NSG ? Marcos see action all the time and therefore they also fall in battle.

The more they see battle , expect more casualties.

There is nothing like battle hardened. Just duking it out for 30,000 bench prenches, 0ne zillion kill courses etc does not confer as much of an edge ( if any) as hollywood will have you believe.

Take a RR Jawan who has seen constant action, does not have an ounce of fat on his body , is still in his twenties , uses a AK, but is used to it and you have as good a "piglet" killing machine as any 10000000000 bench pressing Delta warrior with his FN SCAR and sensor and attitude.

Remember our jawans are drawn from a milieu / background not very dissimilar to the piglets. both come from not to rich rural backgrounds and both have the hardiness that a lad of subcontinent brought up running jumping and eating in cow fields has.

I personally do have a complaint with IA and its officers, especially of the SF types, it is that they are too brave, yes I understand and know first hand that IA is what it is because of its leadership from front, but if you keep a track of the fatalities of IA through various incidents (and I keep a track of them) they invariably run thus

"Capt/Major/Lt Braveheart KIA in XYZ place. During the incidents Pigs were at a reinforced strategic location and their accurate fire and grenades had pinned down the unit, considering the imporatnce of quick action in order to not let the Pigs slip away/get reinforced, Capt/Major/Lt Braveheart decided to charge in himself (with his trusted radioman/unit man) and ignoring the hail of fire around him broke the Pigs defensive cordon, giving his unit the chance they needed to get in without taking casualities; he was badly injured in the process, but ignored the pleas of his unit to evacuate him, preferring instead to stay and direct the operations, when the mop up was over, the unit found that he had bled too much and died before suitable medical aid could be administered"

I mean this is of course unbelievable courage and self sacrifice and what not, but I would really really really like for the Gentlemen to hold back just a little bit, and also care for themselves a little more.

Please -- we need you alive and well too. Please

^^^ Sanku, how much battlefield experience do u have? Or for conversation sake, how many ppl u know are in the forces who were in actual combat. No one is suicidal in the army. No one wants to be a martyr, more so SF guys who plan to return after a mission and have a cup of chai, visit the wife in a month or two, see their kid grow up, get a few more stars -- and get a few pigs in thr bargain. I know of no armyman who would needlessly endanger his life. It is only when the situation demands that they put themselves at risk. The reason why u see this common thread is that in most such cases, the officer refuses to be evacuated because he is perhaps the only officer around who is still breathing, or he has a skill that others do not. I remember in Kargil, a Lt Col refused to be evvcuated from Tololing because it would have taken 6 men to stretcher him down, and they needed every available man on the battle front. Chk BR archives to see how many officers died in that battle. NONE OF THEM WAS SUICIDAL. I personally knew one of them.

Rohitvats and others,
Personally I was hesitating to ask the above question ,as it is not a suitable time, but not asking that would be unfair to those who were in that battle and will never bring any suitable time again. ,instead I never asked that before,
but this time I have observed something related to the edge these TSP bred piglets might have , that may be of interest and could give some clues , how to clean the piglets very quicky and with ease, which is why I asked that,
those observations from this gun-battle and few previous ones are

1. From the audio-transcripts :

a) This gunbattle(hotel, sopore) and that of 26/11 are very similar in the style they have been conducted.Available audio is of 34+ minutes ,(could have been selectively edited by forensics), so there could possibly be , say around 1 hr 'worth' of talking that could have happened, so "motivation"levels are increased.,same motivation and direction that was provided to 26/11 fidayeens.

b)Complete lack of jamming, that could have prevented terrorists to get directions, same as what happened on 26/11

c)terrorists were perfectly indoctrinated and were behaving as if very near to getting their 72,that makes them 'fidayeen' not common militants, so their training levels should be high for 'special' operations.

d)One of the handler was either a kashmiri(Indian side) or an Indian.(a guess only, but not entirely wrong).

e)They were clearly told to use grenades(HE?) as the troops come closer.

f)They were directed to delay as much as possible, so as to get extensive media coverage, and to cost more to India.

2. From the theater itself:

a)Again and again Sopore and Srinagar are selected, these places are well known for their intense hardliner content amongst the population,so that increases the possibility of local help, same piglets who throw stones on police in their leisure time ,will be providing help.

b)the terrorists are now getting training as how to better protect themselves when they hide themselves in concrete structures, rather than coming in front and fight, in the previous incident all the terrorists were killed in the gun battle in forests but they are more effective when they hide inside the buildings.

c)they know that Indian forces do not have NV capability in operations and always use this in their favour.

d) COIN teams are still lagging many essential gadgets, like better vests,NVC, communication aids etc ,. remember tavor may be a good weapon but ak 47/56,grenades are still lethal

e) above constraints and environment leaves very less options for the Indian captain that to make a sacrificial move

I think some conclusion can be made on this ..

Jobs for Kashmiri youth in paramilitary forces
NEW DELHI: As part of the sops to violence-hit Jammu and Kashmir, the government has decided to recruit 2,000 youths from the state as constables in central paramilitary forces (CPMFs). Announcing the decision, finance minister Pranab Mukherjee in his budget speech said that the youths from the state would be recruited in five CPMFs this year as part of the confidence-building measures being taken by the government.

These youths will be recruited in CRPF, BSF, ITBP, SSB and CISF. It will be done under these forces' ongoing exercise of expansion in the next two years. Overall, the strength of these five CPMFs along with two others — NSG and Assam Rifles — will rise from the existing 8,07,899 personnel to 8,46,242 by the end of this year and finally to 8,80,026 by 2011.

Mukherjee also announced the government's decision to set up solar, small hydro and micro power projects at a cost of Rs 500 crore in the Ladakh region which faces an extreme climate. This is being done to address the problem of energy deficiency in the region.

The decision is based on the plan of the ministry of new and renewable energy which envisaged setting up of 30 small/micro hydel projects aggregating a capacity of 23.5MW and about 40,000 solar thermal systems such as water heating, solar cookers and solar green houses among others.

Sopore: Kashmir's terror zone
Sopore in Kashmir has become a terror hotspot. In the last six months, more than 20 security men have lost their lives fighting militants there.

Army intelligence indicates that a large number of Lashkar operatives continue to thrive in the region.

"Sopore is an endless game in which the Army has been on and off trying to fight this menace of militancy over there," says Brigadier S K Thapa, Sector Commander Kilo Force.

On Tuesday, Captain Devinder Jass and his team came into the town on a specific intelligence tip off about the presence of top Lashkar commanders in the area.

The operation was launched at 2 in the morning. Four hours later paratrooper Imtiaz was killed and Captain Jass died minutes later.

It took more than 24 hours for the security forces to neutralize the militants.

Army sources say around 20 LeT militants are operating in Sopore, among them a top LeT commander Abdullah Yuni who has managed to escape security forces at least five times in the last six months
.

Despite last week's casualties, the Army is now concentrating on specific intelligence-based operations. Sopore is likely to remain at the centre of a renewed offensive.

i recently gave lift to a gunner of a ICV BMP from 5 Mech from pokhran to jaisalmer ... we were talking at length about combat etc.. he said he had seen action in kashmir with some RR unit for almost 4 years... he was telling me he has seen fresh soldiers/commandos just freeze and go blank when under fire ... he showed his bullet wound in the side of his tummy ... and said that in the first 1 - 2 encounter he was very nervous... but after that things were fine.

Gunfight on in Tral

Militant killed, 3 troopers injured; house damaged
Rising Kashmir News

Srinagar, March 03: A militant of Hizbul Mujahideen was reportedly killed in an ongoing gunfight with troopers at Dadasar, Tral in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district. Two army men and a Special Operation Group (SOG) personal were injured in the firefight and have been hospitalised.

A senior paramilitary CRPF officer based in South Kashmir told Rising Kashmir that 42 RR, 180 bn CRPF and SOG men launched a joint combing and search operation at Dadasar, Tral in Pulwama district in the wee hours of Wednesday after receiving inputs about the presence of militants in the area.

“The troopers sealed the area and zeroed-in on some residential houses, where the militants were reported to be hiding. During the operation, the militants fired from automatic weapons and hurled grenades towards the troopers. The fire was returned, triggering an encounter,” he said.

The officer said that the gunfight began at 10 in the morning and the intermittent exchange of firing was going on when reports last poured in. “We have come to know that four militants of Hizbul Mujahideen are trapped in the area. One of them has been killed. However, his body has not been retrieved so far,” he said.

The official said two army men and an SOG personal were injured in the ongoing gunfight and have been hospitalized. “One of the houses where from militants were firing has been damaged after IEDs were planted in it. The militants are now firing from adjoining houses,” he said.

The CRPF official said that additional troopers have been rushed to the area and they have tightened the siege to prevent the militants from escaping from the area. “Besides we are using Improvised lighting arrangements to ensure that militants don’t escape from the area,” he said.

Meanwhile, a local news gathering agency, KNS claimed that two militants Abdul Rashid alias Abu Hamza and Sher Khan were killed. The agency claimed that Hamza was active since 11 years while Khan was a surrendered militant and had rejoined militant ranks recently.

Two Hizb ultras surrender to J&K police

4 Mar 2010, 2053 hrs IST, AGENCIES
Two top militants of pro-Pakistan Hizbul Mujahideen on Wednesday (March 3) surrendered before security forces while another was arrested in Jammu region, police said. Abdul Lateef Bali alias Abdu Hamza, a self-styled Deputy Divisional Commander of the outfit, and his “Deputy” Sher Mohammad alias Saifullah laid down arms before Jammu and Kashmir DGP Kuldeep Khoda in Doda town. The arms laid down by them included a universal machine gun, an AK rifle, a grenade launcher, seven RPG rounds, 550 rounds of AK rifle, six magazines, 50 electronic detonators and one M-16 grenade, police said.

Laying down arms, the two said they were fed up with the militancy and, therefore, had decided to shun violence. The DGP said, “It is a big achievement for the police force. The surrender of top commanders has given them (Hizb) a setback.” The DGP assured them all help in leading a peaceful life. He also appealed to other militants to come forward and take advantage of the surrender policy of the government. More and more militants, particularly “top commanders” were likely to surrender in coming months, Khoda said.

......................

For all practical purposes, the Indian Army and paramilitary forces are fighting blind at night, as the soldiers face a glaring shortage of night vision devices. The ones in service are a generation behind what Pakistani and Chinese forces already have and only 10% of the Indian Army’s tanks have a proven night-fighting capability. For all practical purposes, in a modern scenario where most battles are fought under the cover of darkness, the inability to even see the enemy is crippling the war capabilities of the Indian Army.

At the crux of the matter is the Army’s requirement of new third generation night vision devices for soldiers and night sights for rifles. The Indian Army currently has second generation devices which are termed more of a hindrance than an asset. The difference is in the capability to see at night. Pakistan, on the other hand, has got a range of third generation devices from the US. Hunt is on for advanced night-vision goggles for the Indian Army and Air Force’s pilots flying helicopters like Cheetahs, Chetaks and Dhruv advanced light helicopters to ensure they can operate effectively after sunset.

An army equipped with night vision goggles, helmets, and weapons sights would be able to operate 24 hours a day. “The night vision industry has evolved through three stages. The first generation technology is obsolete in the US market. We offer products based on generation II, II-plus, III, and III-plus. Each generation offers more sensitivity and can operate effectively on less light,” says explains Ron Davis, director of international business development at ITT Night Vision, a company which has : sold night vision goggles for the Indian armed forces.

Among others, the Q-Sight family is a new line of helmet display products developed byBAE Systems, which is likely to be offered to the Indian armed forces. The Q-Sight products use patented technology to move light using holographic waveguides. Tested in flight trials in the US and UK, the technology offers a modular approach to giving pilots head-up and eyes-out capability. It combines mission-critical situational awareness with significant improvements in weight, cost, flexibility, simplicity, and optical performance.

According to Paul Cooke, director, business development, rotary wing avionics, BAE Systems, the Q-Sight design eliminates bulky projection optics to provide maximum safety and comfort and avoid undesirable centre-of-gravity issues. The lightweight, miniature display clips to any standard helmet, giving the pilot plug-and-play capability.

Conventional helmet display systems use complex and expensive lens groups to move the image from an LCD to an objective lens. “BAE Systems’ patented quantum technology overcomes these factors by using holography techniques, directly coupling the output of an LCD device to a credit-card-size combining lens and eliminating the need for intermediate lenses,” claims Cooke.

I haven't got what you intended to convey. If it means smashing one's way through irrespective of the collateral damage or lives lost of those who are not the terrorists, I think while that is feasible for the Indian Security Forces to do, yet there are reasons why such a mode is not adopted.

1. The terrain is not similar to the terrain a SWAT team will operate.

2. While towns and rural areas where the SWAT will operate is wide, the streets are wide, Kashmir towns or villages are dingy, buildings are cheek by jowl, fields of fire limited and so is observation.

3. The population of the US possibly have a greater civic sense and are ready to help law enforcement agencies. That is not so in Kashmir or even in hinterland India. Further, in Kashmir, organisations like that of Geelani's will create obstruction by putting women and children as shields or as delaying elements.

4. The area of operations in the US are well charted and so it will be easier to plan and execute. In India, one did not even have the building plan to go by of the Taj and Trident for the Black Cats and others! Kashmir is worse. There is no town plan or building plan. In fact, it is like a mushroom growth, build as you like and wherever you like and you require no one's permission!

In Kashmir, the IA or the paramilitary operate off the map and ground recce. The area is not charted and instead is chaotic where the so called building are cheek by jowl.

5. SWAT can operate with gusto and elan and not be concerned about the damage of life and property. The Indian SF or IA cannot undertake any operation with gusto and elan as would the SWAT since the IA and SF cannot afford to alienate the population by wanton loss of lives and heavy collateral damage. And we have the pinko brigade and human rights who will go after the SF and IA without a shred of evidence, but only to demoralise them further. (Note: the Chinese ice skater has been taken to task by the Chinese CCP for putting her parents (by thanking them) over the country! Do we have such 'patriotism'? Observe the harassment the Olympic Gold Medalist Bindra had to go through including from the Sports Minister!

Further, the Indian govt will only hedge and haw and pretend that there could have been 'excesses'.

Lastly and importantly is the psyche. While Americans are brought up on Mr America, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and so on, we are brought up on Amar Chitra Katha and the goodness of man and humanity!

6. I maybe wrong, but then I presume the US citizens are brought up having the individual as the core, while Indians and Orientals are brought up with the community as the core. Therefore, I presume the Indians are more concerned not to damage or harm those who have not harmed even if they unintentionally come in the way of one's line of duty.

Just my view based on my experience. I will state here, I have not gone to the US, but have had extensive interaction with Americans, civilians and military, apart from reading and I find that the Americans are very aware that their National interests are protected, come what may. Good thing. That is not so with us if I may so say. We consider those who are waging war on the State as not 'enemies to our Nation' but 'misguided souls'! This attitudinal difference makes our approach different.

Further, COIN and SWAT actions are different kettles of fish. I wonder if SWAT would win friends in Afghanistan or Iraq and if such actions would help the cause.

Blackwater did a SWAT in Iraq and it alienated all including the US supported govt of Iraq!
Blackwater Shootings ‘Murder,’ Iraq Says

Something related to both this thread and IAF History. I dont remember noting it before - even though I was the one who transcribed it (must have done it half asleep). Anyways stumbed on it today by accident..

Flight Lieutenant John Albert Ratnam Balraj was operating in a Fighter Reconnaissance Squadron in NEFA and NHTA area during 1961/62. He established a highly commendable fighter reconnaissance and ground attack record in operation “Raji” in spite of LMG fire from Naga hostiles. He also spotted two hostile Naga camps in that area and acted as the pathfinder aircraft.
Besides his 45 sorties in operation “Raji”, he did 28 sorties in NEFA sector on reconnaissance missions. In another operation he carried out two vital reconnaissance missions around Dhola post.

Flight Lieutenant Balraj displayed courage, leadership and determination in the discharge of his duties.

Data point:
  • 2008: 237 terrorists killed (171 were foreign)
  • 2009: 161 killed (133 were foreign)
  • Upto March-2010: 21 killed (5 were foreign)
  • Number of listed terrorists: 245 (besides OGW)
....

According to figures available with the police, the number of incidents had shown a significant decline in the last two years but past few months have witnessed a spurt. This is also attributed to “foreign leadership” though the number of “new recruits” from the valley is also going up.

A recent statement by Hizbul Mujahideen supremo Syed Salahuddin that the militants would target the urban areas now has been practically implemented as in the last 10 days four major attacks took place in Srinagar city killing at least four people. This has put the security officials in a tizzy and high alert has been sounded amid reports that “a significant number” of militants had sneaked into the city.

‘Overall situation improving'

Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kashmir zone, Farooq Ahmad, however, does not agree with this “perception.” “There is little increase but the overall situation is on improving track,” he says, adding that there are 245 listed militants in the valley besides over ground workers. “This number may vary here and there.”

Substantiating his claim, he said that in 2008 there were 51 grenade attacks and it remained almost same with 50 attacks in 2009 and so far in 2010 there have been seven such attacks.

Similarly, 30 civilians were killed in 2008; 29 in 2009 and nine so far in 2010. But the attacks on security forces have certainly increased. According to the IGP, there were 18 attacks in 2008 and 19 in 2009 but in just two and half months of 2010 the militants have carried out 11 attacks on security forces. In the last three months, 72 incidents of violence have taken place across the State, according to official sources.

FR Squadrons in early 60s are either 101 or 108, both operating Vampire PR.55s (The trainer variant - modified). The citation is in line with a PR Unit VM. Probably either of these two units.

5 militants shot dead along LoC in Kupwara
It is good to read news when militants are shot down with no injury/causality on our side. With the level of risks involved, the chances of everyone getting out unscathed are very slim indeed. It shows the skill and professionalism of the soldiers.

BTW 42 RR is rasied by Assam Regiment.
The very best part about the those pictures was the troops' footwear. Glad to see those cumbersome leather boots aren't hobbling the men.
