India test flies light combat chopper successfully
http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/new ... 743118.cms
BANGALORE: India has successfully flight tested a prototype of the Light Combat Helicopter (LCH), designed and developed by the state-run Hindustan
Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), a top official said Tuesday.
"The maiden test flight of the LCH Monday evening was successfully. Though it was a short haul lasting about 20 minutes, the performance was good," HAL chairman and managing director Ashok Nayak told IANS.
The 5.5-tonne attack copter is a derivative version of HAL's flagship product Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH), christened Dhruv.
"We will be conducting more test flights to evaluate its various parameters at different altitudes and conditions. We are looking at reducing the weight considerably for better manoeuvrability," Nayak said.
Made of lightweight composites, the LCH can operate at high altitudes up to 6,000 metres or 18,000 feet.
The prototype was flown with Shakti engine, developed by HAL in partnership with Turbomeca, the French manufacturer of aero engines for global aerospace majors.
"Plans to launch the flight trials of LCH have been going on over the last couple of months but got delayed due to reassessment of its various functions and flight control systems," a official of the company's copter division said.
HAL plans to hard-sell about 150-175 units of the LCH to the Indian defence services, mainly Indian Air Force (IAF) and Indian Army, which already operates the military version of Dhruv for various functions.
Senior officials of the company's helicopter division and IAF were present at the HAL airport to witness the test fight.
The LCH will be equipped with a helmet-mounted targeting system, electronic warfare systems and advanced weapons systems.
The LCH will incorporate a number of stealth features and crash-worthy landing gear for better survivability. It will have a narrow fuselage, with two crew stations.

FWIW HAL is media shy these days, more than secretive.
p.s. where's his favourite multi-coloured fonts ?

They better be. Any delays / failures in future (God forbid) will only embarass them, a la LCA. Some of us BRFites are champs at that!Jagan wrote:Borrowing a page from GJ

Re: LCH discussion
Great pic. However,it shows what I find to be one crucial difference when seen in comparison with attack helos worldwide,in that the second cockpit is located much lower than in rival helos. The view of the pilot/gunner to either beam is excellent, but the rear crew member's view straight on leaves a lot to be desired.Whether this is going to be a handicap only the testing regime will tell.Otherwise the shaping of the chin/fuselage (look at the similar approach of the Chinese attack helo) indicates RCS/stealth features incorporated. Now fo a swift testing programme and induction into service.

re: rear seat's view
he will get his info from the HMS. for his job he won't need to depend on eyeball Mk1.

Re: LCH discussion
This is so awsome.. the cockpit looks spacious compared to Tiger/Apache/Ka 50.

Re: LCH discussion
any news on the Helina which was to arm the LCH
Re: LCH discussion
LCH looks good. However the cockpit is a bit too much exposed. Would have preferred a higher back seat and less glass on the cockpit like this one has. Maybe they needed to put this much glass due to the weight. Hopefully the final version will address these issues.
Great effort by HAL.

Re: LCH discussion
Looks like the same amount of glass as that on an AH-64 Apache or a Eurocopter Tigerneeraj wrote:LCH looks good. However the cockpit is a bit too much exposed. Less glass = less visibility. So add some more metal in the way and then people will come out and say that LCH has less visibility than AH-64 or Eurocopter Tiger. You can't win 'em all.
Re: LCH discussion
Does the cockpit have bulletproof glass... also I wonder if it wud have been better to have a Comanche style tail to complement the stealth features
Re: LCH discussion
Compared to other Heli's, LCH has a "boxy" structure, i.e. fuselage is made of few straight panels, joined together sharp angles.
Is this a stealth feature? Like Ships have now boxy structures covering pretty much everything? But Helo with a huge fan up there and stealth dont necessarily make sense?
Any gyan? For better armor?

Re: LCH discussion
IMO, 'pneumatic lever' is a shock-dampener for impacts with landing surface, akin to the ones in the front. When landing wheel impacts landing surface, it swivels about the pivot transferring energy to the dampener, effectively cushioning energy transfer to the fuselage. Its going to stick-out all the time, like it appears in the pictures of first flight.nukavarapu wrote:I was under impression for sometime that the rear wheel is just gonna stick out straight, but looking at the pics, the rear wheel has a pneumatic lever to pull it up, but I don't see any significant space on the tail to pull the rear wheel in. Is it just going to stick to the tail on bottom side and be outside horizantally during flight compared to vertical position while landing or hovering??? Any gyan wud be greatly appreciated !!!
