Humble question.

Can the payload and kinetic energy of a single Brahmaputri destroy a building of this size?

if you mean the mizzile, not unless it has a nuke which is currently not the case AFAIK. but why would you want to destroy it ? I would rather have the tricolour flying on it.

You may want to destroy it before flying the tricolor. The Vastu is not right

You can calculate the Kinetic Energy of a Brahmos missile with its empty weight travelling at Mach 2.0. And then add the 290 kg say 50% explosive energy to that.

or else you can look up youtube videos of a Brahmos(inerted) hitting an old Indian Navy ship and see how much Kinetic energy is delivered at target.

or short answer is yes.

-------

use mass at 1500 kg at mach 3.0

Assume half the weight goes for fuel to get to target.
plug into KE formula to get ball park estimate.

ramanaji, that is the paki senate building. sinking a frigate is a completely different ball game from destroying a large concrete building. for the former you just need to punch a big enough hole in the superstructure. even for much smaller concrete bunkers 1000 or 2000 lb bombs are the norm, this a huge building by comparison.
brahmos carries 200kg of explosives. the KE will give it a penetrative effect but that does not destroy the building.

Errr partial damage to the physical structure itself is only half the target isn't it. If timed right, it could take out more than just the physical structure right?

There is a reason why MBTs do not employ armor piercing rounds against concrete buildings or fortifications , HESH is the preferred round ; Brahmos was designed ground up for anti ship role its land attack version is good for carrying surgical strikes on VIP bunkers or other heavily fortified high value targets for civilian infra it is an overkill and imho unsuitable.

How much work went on in the Pentagon on the day the plane hit? We don't know - but all reports indicated severe disruption. One Brahmos hitting that Paki building will certainly disrupt its work for several days. Even if portions remain intact, wives will be telling husbands not to go because is unsafe. And husbands will not want to work because it may get hit again. And the rescue and repair services will have access to the building making security, rescue, access and normal work a nightmare.

So one Brahmos hitting that building would be sufficient for about 3-4 days - but there should be a repeat attack in 3 days and again after 3 days. That would render it ineffective for some time.. And while we are at it, let's not forget the effects of a few unguided rockets from pods fired at the Paki governor's building in Dhaka in 1971. Will link the video here when I locate it

Thunder over Dacca (the story from the horse's mouth)
http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/IAF/Histo ... Dacca.html

Jagan what is the link to that BBC reporter's video of the Dhaka governor's surrender following the rocket attack described above?

Search for user lw71 on YouTube and malek as key words

For that sortie our pilots deliberately used rockets - as one of them described "we wanted to put the fear of god in them. Not kill them" . He meant that using the 500kg bombs would have killed them. Outright

Pak may give nukes to ‘surrogate Taliban’ for use against India: U.S.

Just proves my greatest fears as noted in post below, validated by US Report..(Link above)
Ashish J wrote: More apt qustion wud be,,,How would India reply if LeT gets hold of(with help of Pak State), all of its nuclear weapns and threaten India 2 vacate Kashmir,,,,
This scenario is most likely,,rather than they trying to ship nukes into India(Y wud they need 2 ship it to India???)

Can you tell me what is the difference between the LeT and the Paki army and how LeT control of nukes will make any difference to India?

No diff btwn Pak Army and Let .Thats precisly i have stated (witrh help of PAk state)
But Pak wud never make that threat officially, but using a proxy like LeT , they cud wash off there hands of it comparatively easily...That was my point...

Stupid question

Why are there no semi-submersible warships? Isnt that the best solution for reducing RCS? With the latest generation of VLS, I am sure launching slightly below water should not be a problem?

Surface speed would decrease, power requirement and fuel requirement would increase and the semi submersible would neither have the advantages of a ship nor those of a submarine, with the disadvantages of both.

Just a guess..

Now that DRDO and its associated labs has got sufficient experience in Nishant UAV, they should work on moving on to the next step, from Nishant as a single UAV to NIshan(t) as a system. Instead of one UAV flying, there should be a formation of 2 nishants flying in precission formation. While one is with the camera for recon and aiming, the next one in the formation should be carrying long range sniper or a grenade launcher. The target being acquired from N1, should be picked and shot at by this sniper laden N2.

Nice no? Small suggestion onree.

I have never seen it in a bookstore. You must subscribe. Sadly - it appears to me that the Indian reading audience has not matured beyond glossy mags of celebrities, homes, interiors, and cars or general interest journals into wanting to read specialist journals like a science journal or a military/aviation journal.

A magazine stall attached to a supermarket started offering "Force" magazine about 6 months ago. But even that has now dried up. We are just not there yet. But let me look at the bright side - the internet has opened up to a person like me access to people of my own caste - i.e Aeroplane caste who will all come and celebrate the biennial Aeroplane festival in my home village Yelahanka.

Newbie Question.

Does the IN have any ground-based forces? Say for protecting the naval bases against attacks from marines / LPD forces / etc. ? I tried to look up but could not find any info on that. The IAF garuds protect the air-bases and such other imp installations against sabotage, not sure of the naval bases / stations are protected by the MARCOS.

Follow-up question. Can the IN raise a ground-based regiment of BrahMos-LACM (i.e. MK-2) on mobile autonomous launchers mounted on Tatra Trucks and position them on the Gujarat coast (say near INS Dwarka, but spread out around it, or probably near AFS Bhuj/Jamnagar and operated by the IAF). Have the co-ordinates for Karachi naval base, Gwadar naval base and all other Paki naval bases fed to them and have them on launch alert all the while. In the event of a war, take out all the Paki naval bases in the first hr. - Paki Ships either stranded at sea or destroyed if they are berthing on any port

During peacetime there is a force called DSC (Defense Security Corps) that takes care of security of Defense installations. Naval assets should also be under them.
Once I met with an Ex-para who was working in it(after completing his term there).
They were armed with SLR's primarily and were in decent shape though little older.()

Bolded part is not quite true. There's a reason why many blast resistant structures are reinforced concrete, even steel structures have concrete around the steel sections.

Also quite hard to do the math unless one has the bldg plans. A few KT should do the job anyways, if not a few more will take care of it :D

But why are we looking at this building? The correct bldg is this one

Does AESA mean that there should not be mechanical movement of the array? The reason I ask is as follows. As far as my knowledge goes, an AESA scanner in the nosecone of an aircraft can at best scan the hemisphere in front of it. But if that AESA array can be tilted a few degrees in all directions the radar should be able to scan areas above, to the sides and below the aircraft. Of course some penalty will be paid as there will be reduced scanning in the direction 180 deg away from the tilt. Or is there something seriously wrong with my understanding?

Check out the Selex Galileo swashplate AESA Its been around for a little while now. It will be used on the Gripen NG and maybe the Typhoon.
With a 200 degree field of regard in azimuth and elevation, the swashplate AESA is strong in off-boresight performance, an area where the fixed AESA is weak - because the latter loses performance off-boresight and can't scan more than 120 degrees at all. And it does it all with one mechanical bearing, which is much less highly loaded than the gimbals of a mechanically scanned radar
Another Link
The British development will use Selex Galileo's so-called swashplate architecture, which allows the radar's angled antenna to be rotated. Other AESA radars developed in the U.S and France use fixed antenna.

The swashplate technology has recently flown onboard a Saab Gripen test aircraft following the decision by the Swedish company to fit a Selex Galileo Raven ES-05 AESA radar to the next generation variant of the fighter now under development.
SAAB Brochure about the Gripen NG. It includes info about the radar.

1 G.R. stand for 1 Gorkha Rifles (The Malaun Regiment), a senior Rifle Regiment of the Indian Army.

The best source of information about the said soldier is the Records Office of the Regiment at their Regimental Center at Subathu, in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. However, I'm not sure if the correspondence address of the same is available on the internet.

What you can do is write to authorities at Army HQ in New Delhi and let them know of your intentions. You can contact them at the below mentioned URL:

I saw in discovery that Americans were able to bomb Iraqi military installations because they had added chips on the computers that were placed in these installations.Well, the computers were supplied by an american company.
If the americans can bug computers why wont they do the same with the military hardware.
I was thinking about asking this in the MRCA forum but perhaps its been discussed..??!!
can anyone answer or point out...

Newbie Question:

I was watching the commissioning of the INS Shivalik on Times-Now before the channel moved to some Rajya-Sabha broadcast. What are the different flags that were hoisted, all on one rope going all the way from the flag-pole of the Navy's flag to the superstructure. I think there were atleast 15-20 flags. In the IA, I know that regiments may have different flags and insignias, but cannot think of any reason for the IN to hoist so many different flags, all on one line. I am sure they are not decorative flags as they were being accorded a lot of respect and were being hoisted during the national anthem

Carl, Bangladesh is the biggest paradox in this sub-continent. Their attitude towards India depends on the regime that has the reins. So, B'desh swings between periods of bonhomie and animosity with the country that helped create it. It's an irony that the crimes committed by Pakistan are so easily forgotten there and there is a significant section that operates according to Pak's designs. Not only Ulfa, almost all insurgent groups in the North-East have camps in Bangladesh and get patronage from a section of people there. Even a little known outfit called the Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (fighting to break away from West Bengal) has its camps there. To explain why B'desh has this blow-hot-blow-cold relationship with India will take a lot more space than this :)
