US to assist Indian Navy in submarine rescue
[Bloomberg, 22 March 2005]
NEW DELHI: India and the US are set to enter into a contract under which the US Navy will assist in the rescue of Indian submarines in distress on 'humanitarian' grounds. "By the end of the year we hope to sign the contract," Vice Chief of the Indian Navy Vice Admiral Yashwant Prasad said in a press conference in New Delhi. Negotiations on the contract had begun as back as 1995 but came to an abrupt end in the wake of the US sanctions against India following New Delhi's nuclear tests in May 1998. The discussions were resumed following the lifting of the sanctions two years later. Vice Admiral Prakash said certain fittings had already been made on Indian submarines that would facilitate rescue operations. He said in the event of an emergency, the US would fly out a rescue kit to India and added India had already paid US $100,000 towards this. The US assistance in rescue operations was sought because the Indian Navy does not have a submarine rescue vessel, he said. He said the Indian Navy, which needs to upgrade its maritime surveillance capabilities, was looking at the US-made P-3C Orion aircraft with interest.
