The screw ups on the MMRCA continue to cascade. The Rafales will complete delivery by 2022 and the first one will arrive in late 2018. The IAF needs to have a high volume production line to meet the attrition rate for the MiGs and Jaguars. No way the LCA alone will the gap.

It's worth noting the the TX LM facility at its peak churned out 30 F-16s a day!

There is no alternative. It's no longer just order a few more MKIs. Sure they are relatively cheap but at 55%-58% availability...

Not so fast. The C-17 saga dragged on until the line stopped and the IAF which wanted more now has to plead for more units from USAF inventory. WL locating radars were first mooted in the mid-1990s. The C-130s and P8Is also took a long time. What is lightning fast is how quickly they were delivered.

The Hawks took umpteen years because 1. No one was very keen on buying British (Jaguar experience), 2. HAL and others brought out indigenous 'concepts', 3. There was no money. They ended up being bought to win over the Brits for our holy grail—a UNSC seat.

JAMNAGAR: India is mulling manufacturing one more line of fighter aircraft to replenish its dwindling fleet and a decision in this regard is likely to be taken in a year's time, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha said today. The Chief of Air Staff said the second line of fighter jets will be in addition to light combat aircraft Tejas and 36 Rafale planes that India will procure from France. "Definitely they (government) are thinking to set up one more line of fighter aircraft in a year under the Make in India project so that the dwindling fighter aircraft fleet can be replaced within shortest possible time," Raha said. He was asked how the IAF is going to replenish the diminishing number of its fighter aircraft. "This plan is going to materialise in a year's time... Addition of new aircraft to the IAF fleet through indigenous technology is also being worked out, with the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) providing 120 LCA," he said.
Sheer stupidity. Rafale is a done deal. We should now dump all our resources into LCA MKIA and II and rope in a private company to help w/ manufacturing. What's the use setting up another aircraft line?

Have a feeling that F-16 is coming.

F-16 ain't coming. That platform has reached the end. You cannot upgrade it any further. Secondly, why buy something that your arch enemy has been flying for 33 years?

IF there is going to be a second line of fighter jets, it will be none other than Rakhi Sawant (F-18 Super Hornet). Gripen NG will spell the end of the Tejas. The Super Hornet on offer to India will use the F414-EPE engine, which is similar to the Tejas Mk.2's planned engine (F414-GE-INS6). And with Snecma offering to revive & develop the Kaveri, the Tejas will not have any engine issues. A proven engine (GE) vs an engine manufacturer (Snecma) both working to get the Tejas flying. Although, it would be better for India if the Kaveri took off. Do not want to be tied to the Khans for the engine.

Remember, the F-16 is a single engined fighter...but production examples use either the GE F110 or the P&W F100 engine.

The Indian Air Force intends to procure 12 High Power Radars (HPRs) for air defense surveillance. The radars would be based on active aperture phased array technology, based on Solid State Trans / Receive Modules.

The Indian Air Force requires that its radars have the ability to classify targets as large, medium and small fixed-wing aircraft, rotary wing aircraft, and air launched stand-off weapons and UAVs automatically.

"The radar should have three or more auxiliary or decoy transmitters to counter Anti-Radiation Missiles (ARM) from all directions and it should have the ability to carry out the surveillance of airspace in Track While Scan Mode," reads a document from India's Ministry of Defense.

Apart from High Power Radar, the Ministry of Defense also intends to procure approximately 216 Light Weight Man Portable High Frequency sets. These sets will be used to provide secure and robust voice / data communication in high altitude areas. India would like to place these systems in northeastern parts of the Himalayan region bordering China. India is strengthening network centric communication for uninterrupted data transfer from these areas.

The Indian Air Force is also looking for four new aerostat radars for low level surveillance, which should have an operating altitude of 15,000 feet. Currently the Indian Air Force has been using Israeli aerostat radars. All these air defense systems are intended to keep an eye on aerial activity along border areas.

Combination of an Indo-Russia BMD System will make Paki Nukes Obsolete

Thursday, October 06, 2016
By: Defence News

Indian BMDs coupled with the Russian S-400 will make Pakistani Missiles Obsolete. Ashwin is an anti-ballistic missile designed to intercept incoming ballistic missiles in the endo-atmosphere at an altitude of 30 km (19 mi).

Engine : Single Stage
Propellent : Solid Fuel
Operational Range : 150 - 200 km
Flight Altitude : 30 km (19 mi)
Speed : 4.5 Mach
Guidance System : Inertial Navigation System

This new supersonic missile interceptor will soon become a part of the Indian Army's arsenal of world class weaponry. India started its own BMD programme in 1995.

Last Decvember, India signed a deal with Russia to commence negotiations to acquire the S-400 Triumf Air Defence Missile System for an estimated Rs. 40,000 crore. The S-400 Triumf can tackle multiple Aerial threats at long ranges and is considered to be the most advance system available with Russia.

Combination of the S-400 and the India's BMD System will make Pakistan's Nuclear Missile threat completely obsolete.

Russian experts claim that the S-400 can blow stealth fighters like the American F-35 and the F-22 out of the air. It can also destroy aircraft or missiles flying five metres above ground level by targetting them from above.

Taking the Battle to the Enemy ::
Because the S-400 Missiles can travel at speeds of upto Mach 14 or 17,000 kmph, the system can literally take the war into the enemy's airspace.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
For instance, an S-400 based in Halwara air base can bring down an F-16 flying over Lahore in just 34 seconds, giving the Pakistani pilot no time to say his prayers.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

After successful implementation of both the Indian and Russian BMD Systems in Delhi and Mumbai, the cover will be expanded to protect other major metro cities like Bangalore, Kolkatta, Ahmedabad, Pune, Chennai, etc. The dual shield can destroy incoming ballistic missiles launched from as far as 2,500 km (1,600 mi) away.

Tonbo Imaging, a Bengaluru-based startup, has bagged a $100-million contract to manufacture and export ‘night-vision sights’ for guns to be sold by a US company to the Peruvian army. The device will be fitted on rifles supplied to Peru by US manufacturer Unified Weapon Systems (UWS). Tonbo and UWS will offer a similar deal to the Indian army.

Two things to note:
1. we have domestic capability and it is difficult to comprehend why we don't equip our troops for night fighting
2. even cost wise its not comparable to big ticket purchases but may give a bigger ROI by increasing our troops' fighting capability

Just a noob observation...

Hi,

Any Signature of Deals with Russia would need CCS Nod. I am hopeful if there is an cabinet Meet today it should be cleared.

If such case, news may get leaked on the clearance today/Tmrw itself. Wish all the critical deals are signed during this weekend's Summit .

This would also give strong message to Chinese President also who would also be visiting for BRICS Summit.

Jai Hind!!!

Defence contracts worth Rs 50,000 crore on the anvil: Manohar Parrikar
MUMBAI: Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar today said he expects another Rs 50,000-60,000 crore worth of defence contracts to be signed during the remaining quarters of the financial year, taking the total orders to Rs three trillion since he took charge two years ago.

"During the past 23 months that I have been in charge, we have signed contracts worth Rs 2.2 trillion. Recently, we signed a letter of intent with a government-run shipyard for about Rs 32,000 crore, taking the total orders to Rs 2.5 trillion."

"Over the next six months, I hope to sign another Rs 50,000-60,000 crore worth of contracts, taking the total 3 trillion,"

Answering a question on the impact of the manufacturing push with private participation in the defence space, he said exports have jumped over six-times to Rs 3,000 crore from Rs 500 crore in the past two years alone.

Parrikar also said the ministry is finalising a new strategic materials policy so that we can promote production as well as storage of defence-related strategic materials.

"We have set up a study team to draft a new strategic materials policy to promote the sector, which involves production and storage of these materials," he said.

S-400 is an evolution of S-300. Its a good question since both S-300V4 and S-400 have the same range. Maybe S-400 is the E version (Export).

Do you really expect all 3 (Russia, China and India) having the same S-400 version?

They are already developing S-500 to replace S-300.

Those are the max range of one missile which is part of this S 400 complex. Its actual engagement range will be shorter, much shorter.

Also 40N6 missile won't be employed in numbers due to its high cost, expect more smaller range missile to be part of its equation.

It's something which India has been working for sometime now, PAD+AAD+LRSAM+Akash.

Yes but the range will ensure pakis are always a nervous wreck while flying. Even 120 Km or so for MR-SAM is the max range actual range will be much shorter.

How scary is the Russian S-400 SAM?
https://fightersweep.com/3414/how-scary ... am-system/
The system is capable of destroying airborne targets as far as 250 miles away, at speeds that are just….ridiculous.
So what does all of that mean for coalition airpower? Our good friend Tyson Wetzel, a graduate of and former instructor at the U.S. Air Force Weapons School, has broken down the tactical and strategic implications for the Russian S-400 deployment in Syria. The bottom line? It’s a pretty scary prospect, considering the SA-21–from its current position around Hmeymim Air Base near Latakia, can cover all by the eastern-most points in Syria.
That also means a healthy amount of Operation Inherent Resolve air assets, both U.S. and coalition, are underneath the Growler’s coverage at their forward-deployed locations. That fact is, as one U.S. pilot said, “not even remotely” awesome for anyone flying over Syria.
Shooting down a Block 50/52 (their purest of the pure F-Solahs) would seriously damage their H&D. They may never recover fully from that one. The F-Solah is ingrained into the Pakistani psyche.

S-400 missile system
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-400_missile_system
The S-400 uses three different missiles to cover its entire performance envelope. These are the extremely long range 40N6, long range 48N6 and medium range 9M96 missile.
400 km (40N6 missile)
250 km (48N6 missile)
120 km (9M96E2 missile)
40 km (9M96E missile)

NATO/US SEAD role is usually done by Apaches to create air corridor during initial phase of conflict. Last time when they went fast and low it was during first Libyan conflict, where they lost F-111 and other assets due to ground fire and engine troubles.

They have perfected this technique after several conflicts.
