If so, can you list them here? if not, given that I do not have enough info about India myself (a CBSE Dhimmi), can someone help by suggesting books that are good? :-o

BTW I am thinking both short term and long term.

Maybe we could properly tag these lists in order to help every other parent out there.
I am not a parent, but I second this, in order that it isn't overlooked.

Folks how to save the TIFF or DIVU files for later viewing?

For example in the Rashtrapathi Bhavan library I found Malgoankar's "Bend in the river"which deals with Partition. How to download it so I can read offline.

Book List Please!

Post by Keshav »

I didn't know where to put this. Hopefully, a few will help me out.

My father is going to India soon and I want him to find as many books as he can for me. My primary interest is history but I know how little interest it creates in India so I'm asking for a list of famous Indian works on Indian history in English. Single names refer preferably to biographies on the characters or events in their lives.

Topics preferably include:
Shivaji
Vikramaditya
Chandragupta Maurya
Ashoka
Chanakya also Arthashastra
Sikh Empire/ Ranjit Singh
Guru Gobind Singh - Autobiography and personal works
Maharana Pratap
Rajputana history by Col. James Tod (what is the title of this?) - any other histories of Rajputs?
Biography of Savarkar also First War of Independence, 6 Glorious Epochs of Indian History
Biography of Subash Chandra Bose as well a collection of speeches and letters, correspondences
Chitralekha
Anandamath
Biography of Keladi Chennamma (Telegu queen who fought Aurangzeb)
Lachit Borakhpan (Assamese general against the Mughals)

Anyone heard of the Gujarat novel: Kanhadade Prabandha (dealing with the conquest of Gujarat by Aladuin Khilji)?

A famous Hindi novel dealing with a Rajput princess written by a Sufi. Is it called "Padmavati"?

Tulsidas: Ram Charitra Manas

Tamil stories relating to Kovalan, Madhavi, Kannagi

I'm sure I'll find more.
Thanks in advance for any help finding good editions for these topics.

Ramana Ji, I use internetiff to download and save tiff images from USPTO site in a single file. I am not sure whether it will work for other sites. They do have a trial version, you can try it out before purchasing.

Thanks Sunil.

Meanwhile from the archives.org site link to the Indian libraries scan of the Million Books Project

Most are DIVu and Tiff files where as the archives project has pdfs etc. Atleast gives an idea of what is there.

I use irfanview for tiff. Its a free download, just google for it. Make sure you also download its plugins. It lets you view almost all graphics formats.

Never used divu, do you mean djvu?

Ramana, djvu are supposed to be device independent files. So one should be able to read them on any computer. Djvu files look like pdf, but occupy somewhat less space. However, reading them requires some kind of interface like YAP (Yet another previewer) which is installed on a standard MikTeX or LaTeX freeware package. See http://www.math.vanderbilt.edu/~schecte ... st_tex.htm for details. Look for conversion software from dvi format to other formats. Dvi stands for device independent.

A software with enormous power to convert between diff image formats is GIMP; so you can easily convert a TIFF which occupies loadsa space into JPG or gif. It is available for free.

The Moors are important for most of the European perceptions of Islam and the other world were drawn from their experience with the Moors. In fact Afrcian people were identified with color rather than any other association. The Spanirds and the Portugese got most of their words from them.

Here is a google book

The Golden Age of the Moors

We need to study them to get an idea for why things are the way they are.

David Irving's site
http://www.fpp.co.uk/books/index.html

World war 2 free EBooks , written from the German point of view.
Some of them are classics like:
Nuremberg,
Destruction of Dresden,
Erhard Milch: The rise and fall of the Luftwaffe,
Destruction of Convoy PQ17,
Rommel: The trail of the fox

and many more.....

Some of the books are so hard hitting, no wonder David irving is hated and banned in many countries

If he can find it, "The Grand Rebel" by Dennis Kincaid is absolutely amazing. A thoroughly researched, detailed account of Shivaji's life... but also a gripping read. It's a very old book though and may be out of print.

The afore-mentioned Dennis Kincaid died tragically by drowning
in the sea off Karwar while swimming. His father Charles Kincaid wrote the celebrated book "The History of the Mahratta People". Grant Duff's 1878 book "History of the Mahrattas" is available as free download on Google Books (27.5mb).

The grave of Dennis Kincaid is somewhere in a small cemetery in Karwar
and the cemetery itself threatened by Project Seabird. I am told Adm. Dawson the architect of Seabird is aware that Kincaid's grave lies in this cemetery and has made various attempts to locate it and remove it to a safer place. I hope he succeeds since the headstones are in ruins and in poor condition. Kincaid Jr and also Kincaid Sr. did much to dispel the notion of Shivaji as a bandit and highwayman.

Photos of the Gods

The book is very detailed and talks about "popular visual culture" and the paintings and photos that were created for the Independence Struggle. I haven't scanned it for bias or prejudice but the pictures themselves and nice to see.
