Reference thread - lists of terrorist attacks
Re: Reference thread - lists of terrorist attacks
anupmisra, I agree with you but why limit that to the violence in the Punjab ? The ISI also trained, and continues to train, fund, arm, and plan activities of various terrorist organizations in India’s North-East, such as the ULFA (United Liberation Front of Assam), NDFB (National Democratic Front of Bodoland), MNF (Mizo National Front of insurgents in Mizoram) and other outfits in the South. It has also come to light that ISI has colluded with LTTE to target India. All these should be recorded.
Every incident must be individually tagged and backed up with references.

I agree. Someone else mentioned the NE. Musn't forget attacks on Indian assets overseas (Kabul, e.g.,).SSridhar wrote:anupmisra, I agree with you but why limit that to the violence in the Punjab ? Every incident must be individually tagged and backed up with references.
The goal could be to create a database that current and future generations of Indians and Indian-origin peoples can tap into. Hopefully, this would also serve the needs of researchers, journalists, and Indian and foreign government agencies. I kind of like the Jewish approach where every new generation must be reminded of the terrible holocaust the jewish people went through lest they (the new geeration) forget it and have it be repeated on them.

Europe's threat from Pakistan
RAFFAELLO PANTUCCI

EUOBSERVER / COMMENT - During a recent visit to Pakistan, Britain's Prime Minister Gordon Brown stated that a third of terror plots in the UK have connections to that beleaguered country.
In a press conference with President Asif Zardari he went on to state that with a set of new proposed measures, he hoped to "break the chain of terror that links the mountains of Afghanistan and Pakistan to the streets of the UK."
But while the UK seems to have taken a view that there is a very real threat to Europe that needs to be engaged with in Afghanistan and Pakistan and makes the case regularly to its public, there is remarkably little sensible public discussion on such matters from other European capitals.………………
For the United Kingdom, it would seem as though the main threat comes from cells that assemble in the UK around individuals who have at some point travelled and trained at extremist camps in Pakistan’s Northern provinces.
Prominent examples include Mohammed Siddique Khan and Shezhad Tanweer who were the ringleaders of the July 7, 2005 bombing campaign in London; Muktar Said Ibrahim of the copycat 21 July, 2005 group who attempted to carry out an almost identical assault two weeks later; the 2004 "fertiliser plot" group in which a group of individuals planned to carry out a major bombing campaign in the UK using fertiliser based explosives; and the alleged ringleader of the 2006 Transatlantic Airlines plot that led to the current restrictions on carrying liquids on board airplanes. In all of these cases, key individuals apparently sought training in Pakistan before they were sent back with directions to attack the United Kingdom.
………………… " a similar pattern can be seen in Germany, where a cell allegedly led by German-Muslim convert Fritz Gelowicz went to Waziristan to train at Islamic Jihad Union (IJU) camps before heading back to Germany. ……………….
In February 2008, on the basis of a tip-off from an informant who had penetrated the group, the Spanish Guardia Civil arrested a group of 14 Muslims of mostly Pakistani origin, some of whom had entered the country indirectly from Pakistan and activated a local cell. …………………
Beyond these direct threats, there is a final group of aspirants from Europe who are drawn to Pakistan’s lawless regions and the terrorist training camps they foster like moths to a flame. These individuals are drawn from across Europe: from the recently arrested network in Belgium and France around Malika el Aroud, the "Al Qaeda living legend," who appeared to be facilitating travel for jihadists to fight in Afghanistan ………………… To Bradford-born Aabid Khan who apparently travelled to Pakistan to establish connections with extremist groups like the Lashkar-e-Toiba, who are believed to be responsible for the Mumbai attacks of November 2008, and its local twin Jaish-e-Mohammed, that was responsible for the 2001 attacks on the Indian parliament that almost brought India and Pakistan to war.
A pan-European problem
It is not always completely clear to what extent some of those mentioned in these plots were directed and connected to Al Qaeda and its affiliates, or were rather groups of fired up zealots who went to seek connections to jihad in Pakistan. What is clear is that this is a pan-European problem, and while the UK may seem the eye of the storm, the rest of Europe is also threatened. ………………

Attacks shatter year-long lull in Valley, 2 killed
M Saleem Pandit, TNN 2 August 2009, 01:35am IST
SRINAGAR: A seeming calm was shattered in the Kashmir valley on Saturday when after a lull of one year militants struck in the heart of Srinagar
and in two separate incidents killed two security personnel. The shootouts also carried the grim reminder that Pakistan-sponsored terror hasn't disappeared from the Valley -- the attack is suspected to have been carried out by Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), the same murderous outfit that carried out the 26/11 attacks.

* From the intercepted conversation transcripts, at every stage of the hijacking, the hijackers were in constant touch with General Head Quarters of ISI in Rawalpindi. The hijackers possessed a very sophisticated satellite telephone to communicate with Rawalpindi. When the authorities in Kabul refused to allow the hijacked aircraft to land, which was communicated by the hijackers to the authorities in Rawalpindi, they were asked to proceed to Kandahar by the people in Rawalpindi.
* Out of the 36 prisoners whose release was demanded by the hijackers as many as 33 were Pakistanis, one was a U.K. national of Pakistani origin, and one was an Afghan. Only one was a Kashmiri Indian. Pakistani interest in getting these prisoners released is evident and backed by earlier attempts.
* Maulana Masood Azhar, former General Secretary of Harkar-ul Ansar, who had entered India under the pseudonym Essa Bin Adam on a Portuguese passport in early 1994 with the obvious objective of promoting militancy in Jammu & Kashmir, was owned by the Pakistan Government as early as June 1996, when Major General (Retd.) Nasirullah Khan Babar, the then Interior Minister of the Government of Pakistan, wrote to the then High Commissioner of India in Islamabad seeking his release on "humanitarian grounds". The use by Maulana Masood Azhar of a pseudonym and a Portuguese passport is in consonance with the Pakistani technique of concealing the real identity through such means.
* The Maulana’s release was also the main demand of the HUM when it kidnapped a group of western tourists in Jammu & Kashmir in 1995.
* Later, in December 1997, the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi sent a formal Note Verbale to the Ministry of External Affairs claiming Maulana Masood Azhar to be a Pakistan national and requesting for Consular access.

8 Jan 2010, 1420 hrs IST
The second encounter in as many days has ended in valley on Friday (January , with forces gunning down two LeT militants in Pulwama after a four-hour-long encounter. The terrorists were holed up in a house in Pulwama's Andrusa village which falls under Pampore, and refused to lay down their arms and began firing at the Border Security Forces. The two were gunned down and have been identified as Altaf and Zafoor, both from the LeT according to Awantipura SP Basheer Khan.
Khan told TIMES NOW that, acting on specific information, police and the Army launched a combing operation in village Andrusa. As the security forces zeroed in, the militants, whose number could not be ascertained, opened fire at them prompting the security forces to retaliate.
"We laid out the cordon during the night and began our searches in the morning. During our searches the search parties came under fire and the search was stopped for some time while civilians were evacuated to safer places. Thereafter the terrorists were asked to lay down their arms and surrender but they continued to fire with their automatic weapons, which was retaliated against and in the melee the two terrorists got killed," he said, adding that Altaf had been known to be involved in several previous attacks including one car blast outside the central jail in Srinagar and an attack on a constable and an SPO in Pampore town in which the SPO was martyred.
"Likewise Zafoor was also involved in many past encounters and today we have been able to get rid of them," said Khan.

IED blast caused derailment of Guwahati-Puri Express: Railways
GUWAHATI: An improvised explosive device was used to trigger the blast that led to the derailment of the Guwahati-Puri Express in Kamrup district in Assam that left 100 passengers injured, officials said on Monday.
Railway PRO Nripendra Bhattacharya said the explosion led to the engine and eight coaches jumping the rails at around 8:30 last evening at Dhatkuchi between Rangia and Ghagrapar in the district.
Four of the coaches toppled over and fell into a three feet water-filled ditch following the explosion, he said.
A large crater beside the tracks and a huge length of fuse wire leading to a jungle were found by the Bomb Disposal Squad after the derailment.
A senior police officer said it appeared to be the handiwork of the Ranjan Daimary-led National Democratic Front of Bodoland anti-talk faction, active in the area.

Even before NATO allegedly killed 24 Pakistani soldiers, this alliance was a wreck. Bruce Riedel on the decades of deceit that have put Obama in diplomatic hell—and why Pakistan holds all the cards.
This trust gap is the result of decades of mutual deceit and lying. Pakistan proclaimed it was our ally against communism or Al Qaeda or whatever when what it really just wanted was arms and help to fight India. America promised to help democracy in Pakistan and instead backed four brutal military dictators. Ironically, the Army believes we have betrayed it over and over again. We have.
