Nepal #earthquake horror: Statue falls on child; Climbers tweet 'hell on Everest'
Romanian climber Alex Gavan said on Twitter that there had been a "huge avalanche" and "many, many" people were up on the mountain.

"Running for life from my tent," Gavan said. "Everest base camp huge earthquake then huge avalanche."

Another climber, Daniel Mazur, said Everest base camp had been "severely damaged" and his team was trapped. "Please pray for everyone," he said on his Twitter page.

BBC reports eye-witness accounts from Mt Everest base camps of people running for their lives to escape avalanche.

Don't take this as plug for US equipment but the C-17s and C-130s are far more capable than than the Ilyushins and Antonovs. We should be getting more of both. From Yemen to Nepal and elsewhere the C17s have become the mainstay for relief efforts.

Not the time or place. Here it is a plug. Afterwards, the aviation thread can debate what these bought to the table that another kind couldnt. This is about as silly as that jesus debate that has started. One wonders why the chinese earthquakes were handled without jesus and C17s, or the japanese tsunami for that matter.

Emergency Declared in Nepal. Casualty figures now at 758 and rising. Time running out for those trapped under the rubble.

Mobile Field Hospital will reach Nepal Tomorrow. Existing teams of NDRF are , though self sufficient to carry out rescue efforts and first aids.

Misphortunately, these air dropped rescue teams can provide first aid to those that got out, or search for those that are trapped but alive and stable. In a place like nepal with zero heavy equipment and pure ignorance of survival techniques (why? they seem to be living on a roller coaster), this will be but a drop in the bucket.

Practically speaking, vast majority of the "lost" have been given up on. Recall that this is neuj onlee from cat-mandoo valley for the most part. Rest of the country probably is just as badly off if not worse.

:( :(

Something I got in my mail.
My parents live in Kathmandu. Just spoke to to them. They are waiting outside in the open field. Although official figure is 114 ppl died, real figure is approx 1500 died till now.

Thanks

Sent from my iPhone
one of My staffer from Nepal, who is in touch with his family in Village says 12 members have died in next house which collapsed. Damages in hinterland villages seems extensive due to poor structure. Rescue efforts are yet to reach there due to difficult terrain and damaged roads. In many places land has just shifted. He is trying to call Nepal and ascertain whereabouts of his relatives. What he got report from his relatives situation seems worse than the magnitude of quake would suggest.
