Re: Armoured Vehicles Discussion Thread - Jan 12, 2012
there is no need for such obvious shortcomings to be delayed to follow up models. the arjun mk2 may be the last gen of this noble beast anyway to be followed by some FMBT from Uralzavod

^^^
From recent news, it sounded like Arjun Mk.3 will become FMBT Mk.1. Most probably it will weight less than Mk.1/2 variants.

one example of a indian co which was NOT decades in automotive business but has still managed to build and import the right technology to carve a niche is the truck venture of the Essar group called AMW (asia motor works), you must have seen their trucks moving around. they sourced some parts like the engine and transmission from some jugaad type but good quality places around the world.
do we think coach factory jabalpur will impart the same fit and finish. I forever associate them with the old shaktiman truck whose welding looked like done by 1st yr UG girl students.

Arjun tank scam: CBI books two officials of Kerala PSU
[quote]undertaking along with some others have been booked inconnection with alleged irregularities in tendering process for the procurement of parts of Arjun tanks, CBI said today.
MD of Steel Industrial Forgings Ltd, Shanavaz along with Senior Marketing Manager Valsan have been booked for alleged violation of tender norms in criminal conspiracy with Subi Mally of Subishi Impex Pvt Ltd, Mumbai, they said.
CBI has registered a case of alleged criminal conspiracy to cheat and relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act against the accused, besides invoking the Official Secrets Act.
The agency has also booked unnamed officials of Heavy Vehicles Factory, Avadi, Chennai while a private company based in Mysore is also under its scanner.
The CBI sources said Subi allegedly used her connections with officials of Indian Ordnance Factory and Heavy Vehicles Factory to reissue the tenders for supply of Arjun tank’s components in favour of SIFL and a private firm at nearly 60 per cent higher rates.
They said Subi was allegedly given 12 per cent of the increment as kick backs for facilitating the deal. The sources said SIFL officials also received the alleged illegal gratification in the case.
Searches were carried out at the residential and office premises of the accused persons, as well as in Ordnance factory, Medak (AP).
Incriminating documents, which are under scrutiny currently, were seized by CBI officials, they said. ABS RA[quote]

The CBI has a million cases far more serious than this and they choose to try and stall Arjun, shows which way the political masters want the wind to blow.

Not sure if anybody witnessed the army day parade in which Gen. Vikram Singh was chief guest? It was nice to see Arjuns as the only MBT in the parade. A pointer to its acceptance in the army?

“By the year 2015 the “Armata” project will be completed. It’s not an armored fighting vehicle in the conventional sense, but rather a cutting edge multipurpose base for infantry fighting vehicles, accident rescue vehicles and others. They will have a modular system and repairing them will take very little time and effort even in field conditions. The damaged item will be easily removed and replaced,” he said.

The Arjun tanks which were part of the RD parade has the number 221 on them http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/Po ... arade2.jpg
Can anyone id the formation they belong to?

Re: Armoured Vehicles Discussion Thread - Jan 12, 2012
From what could be seen and heard during the RD parade, the tanks belonged to 75 Armoured Regiment. The formation sign "battle axe" indicates that it is from 12 Infantry Division.

75 AR is the second Armored Regiment (after 43 AR) to be equipped with Arjun tanks. And 12 Division is actually 12 RAPID - which explains why it has an organic armored brigade in addition to infantry brigades. The armored bde (140 Armd Bde) is based in Jaisalmer.nelson wrote:From what could be seen and heard during the RD parade, the tanks belonged to 75 Armoured Regiment. Re: Armoured Vehicles Discussion Thread - Jan 12, 2012
140 was an Independent Armored Brigade. So sounds like it is now part of 12 RAPID?
An independent Armored Brigade generally has 3 armored regiments and 1 mech battalion. Was that true for 140 as an Independent Armored Brigade?
A RAPID armored brigade generally has 2 armored regiments and 2 mech battalions. So did 140 loose a Armored regiment when it became part of 12 RAPID?

AFAIK, 140 Armd Bde was never an (I) Armored Bde. 14(I) Armd Bde is (edited later - wrongly wrote 4(I) Armd Bde) the (I) Armed Bde of 12 Corps - based in Jodhpur but likely to move to Jaisalmer. And then, there is 340(I) Mech Bde under 12 Corps.
You're right on the composition of Armd Bde of a RAPID. Ravi Rikhye of Orbat.Com claims that one of the Mechanized Battalions is Recce & Support (R&S) battalion. Here is the article link:http://orbat.com/site/toe/toe/india/rapids.html

Re: Armoured Vehicles Discussion Thread - Jan 12, 2012
Bishwa, the 221 denotes something related to Weight? Ex: the T-90 tincans have it as 220. As Orbat Gurus have written, these Tanks have the formation sign of 12 RAPID, the tanks actually belong to 75AR but then regimental affiliations are rarely depicted on MBTs only Div or Brigade (if it is Independent brigade).Bishwa wrote:The Arjun tanks which were part of the RD parade has the number 221 on them http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/Po ... arade2.jpg

Re: Armoured Vehicles Discussion Thread - Jan 12, 2012
221 (and other such numbers) written on vehicles are tactical numbers for identification. So, one of the armored bdes will have 220,221,222 as tactical numbers for its three armored regiments. The second and third will have different set of numbers. Nothing to do with weight.Shrinivasan wrote:Bishwa, the 221 denotes something related to Weight? Ex: the T-90 tincans have it as 220. Each unit within a division is assigned such a number. For example, in the same RD Parade, the engineer regiment vehicles with Sarvatra Bridge contingent, had 255 number on vehicles. This number is reserved across all divisions for Engineer Regiments. Basically, all the support arms in a division have a fixed number earmarked for them. Example - 271 is number reserved for vehicles of Division ASC battalion.

^^^ Thanks Rohit, I stand corrected. If I remember correctly I read somewhere that it maps to the weight, probably the info was wrong.

India test fires cannon launched laser-guided missile
Cannon launched laser-guided missile test today
The DRDO is readying to carry out a trial of an advanced version of cannon launched laser-guided missile (CLGM) from a defence base off the Odisha coast on Monday.
A reliable source said the missile would be test-fired from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur-on-sea. Preparation for the mission is near complete. A special launcher has been set up at the launching complex here for the scheduled test.
...
..
The missile has been developed by the Aeronautical Development Establishment at Bangalore and is a new generation anti-tank missile. It can neutralise any target in 3 km to 5 km range. It is in fact an all terrain missile that can be used by the army, navy and air force.
Sources said the missile will equip the Arjun MK-2 and MK-1 tanks. This missile has bigger warhead and little slower than original 105-mm Laser Homing Attack or Laser Homing Anti-Tank (LAHAT) from Israel.
“The CLGM uses a laser of a specific frequency bandwidth to locate the target. The laser creates a heat signature on the target. The missile recognises it and homes in on it even if the target is moving,” said a defence scientist.
...
..
The ADE has developed the missile with global positioning system technology. A team of officials of the ADE has arrived here for the test. Last week, at least four rounds of laser-guided bombs were successfully tested from the test range.
India test fires cannon launched laser-guided missile
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Monday conducted the tests of an advanced version of Cannon-launched Laser Guided Missile (CLGM) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) off the Odisha coast.
Altogether three rounds of the missile were test-fired from a specially built launcher at the launching complex-II of Chandipur based test range. A defence official said the mission was successful as the missile perfectly destroyed the targets as expected.
“The tests were conducted in between 3.30 pm to 4.30 pm during low tide period. There will be one more round of test on Tuesday. All the data have been collected and would be evaluated after the completion of the mission,” he said.

Six rounds of CLGM tested by DRDO from multiple launchers. Six salvos of Pinaka MBRL tested by IA as part of user testing.
Re: Armoured Vehicles Discussion Thread - Jan 12, 2012
CLGM will be an ideal replacement for LAHAT as they are 120 mm Missile compared to LAHAT 105 mm which are modified to fire from Arjuns 120 mm Gun , the right caliber would also allow it to carry larger warhead and consequently superior performance over LAHAT
Re: Armoured Vehicles Discussion Thread - Jan 12, 2012
This is a wonderful development WRT, the arjun front. This removes one of the grievances that the IA had WRT, the lack missile firing ability of the Arjun tank. While having a domestic product. The next step ought to increase the range and make it fire and forget. In order to kill an enemy tank at 10 + Kms. While getting firing data from off board sensors.
That is now the Jingo wet dream.

Re: Armoured Vehicles Discussion Thread - Jan 12, 2012
mk3 shows all the ammo removed from the hull into the bustle with a autoloader, hence the wedge shaped turret possible with the loader gone.
remains to be seen if something so radical will be tried (unless IDF goes that route and validates it for the IA's confidence level)
