Re: Military Medals, Ribbons and Patches
Another thing that just struck me is the insignia on the sleeve. It depicts a sudarshan chakra instead of the snarling black cat. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't this signify that the individual belongs to SRG while the black cat badge indicates that he's a part of the SAG? ... and does anyone ...

Re: Military Medals, Ribbons and Patches
Thats a combat diver's badge ... NSG personell dont have to go thru the course, which indicates that he could be with the Para-Cdos or maybe even MARCOS. I havent heard of the NSG drawing from the IAF or the IN, but its very much possible. The red patch is definately not the Para-Cdos' "Balidan...

Re: Understanding INSAS
Raj, my bad ... I should have specified a dummy pistol foregrip (like in H&K MP5K). The complaint is that its too sleek and its difficult to keep the center of gravity stable because of the mag's small size. A fore pistol grip would make the gun easir to balance and aim to my understanding. Othe...

Re: Understanding INSAS
Got to know about a common soldier's wish for the INSAS AR - a dummy foregrip, would do wonders for stability and accuracy (might have to adjust the wieght of the compensator though).

Re: Snipers of the Indian Army
Raj, the Ishapore in itself would serve adquately as a sniper rifle, not too popular because of the wieght though. The INSAS will have to be modified to such an enourmous extent to compensate for accuracy, range, stability, etc.
Kabra, the author is obviously Western http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/...

Re: What kind of equipment do the Indian police have?
I guess it varies from state to state - including their insignia et al. Calcutta police's insignia is a slight modification of the one during the British (mis)rule.
There is also a difference in the dress codes for IPS officers and regular personell. Like in the army, they are not allowed to grow ...

Sanjay, the old US weapons were 6 Tommy guns with no mags and a M1.
In the entire collection, a lone M-16 really stood out.
If anyone in Calcutta is interested in finding out more, I can put him in touch with my uncle who was associated with the Arms Act dept. in Lalbazar.

Re: What kind of equipment do the Indian police have?
Neil, the govt. issues a sidearm to police officers, but many prefer to carry their own - its also an investment for police officers to buy their own guns since they get it subsidized (in many cases) and the ease of getting an other difficult-to-get gun license.

Re: What kind of equipment do the Indian police have?
Agreed, the life of an Indian policeman/woman is very tough. Also, an officer's "tabadla" (transfer) is overnight, i.e. they have to leave overnight if they are transfered to another station. The maximum term of posting is for 3 years, I think.

Re: What kind of equipment do the Indian police have?
There was a significant presence of US troops in India during WW2, including the USAF (flying the "hump"). Hindustan Building on Central Avenue in Calcutta used to be the US HQ. The Calcutta Police armory at Lalbazar HQ has a number of WW2 weapons in storage.
The police in the major metr...

Re: What kind of equipment do the Indian police have?
Other than the points GD pointed out, both the .303 Enfield and SLR have a notorious overkill, sometimes piercing through 3 persons.
IMHO we need a double tiered police force - the majority unarmed, and a smaller armed section, like in the lines of the DAP (Delhi Armed Police) or the CAP (Cal. Re: Indian Army's Light Machine Guns
"Caviation" rounds are not banned... unethical, but not banned as they are technically different from Dum Dum bullets, mainly because Dum Dum bullets rely upon the warhead disintegrating inside the impact zone while cavitation round rotate lopsidedly inside the impact zone.

Dum Dum bullets would definately be a breach of the Geneva Convention,... but there are other bullets that would produce the same effect (and are not banned by the Geneva Convention).
One example is (someone mentioned this on the forum) the bullets being used in Chechnya. The tip of the bullets ha...
