Re: Military Flight Safety

The design has done its job. It must have been subjected to its maximum force or more. The aircraft looks like slammed into the mountain at Mach 0.9.

Vivek, For once I have to say, I am not convinced with the Pakis nuking Lahore themselves. It is an impossible sell for them to say the Indians did it. For one, India has a 'stated' no first use policy. And there was plenty of opportunity to retaliate for Mumbai if they wanted to, but they went conv...

@Nik

Do your math before commenting.

If the fuel bill is $300 million per year, the carrier will have to burn 119 million liters of fuel oil per year. (Fuel oil is today around $300 per barrel. So you can buy 1 million barrels for $300 million. One barrel equals 119 litres)

There is that story of the INS Mysore ploughing through a hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean. Heard the ship suffered quite some damage. Have never found any links of that account.

The C-17s are quite a sight in Leh!

Last month when I was there, saw one execute a missed approach and go-around at full load. The aircraft seemed effortless while turning inside the valley.

Statistically fixed wing carrier ops have higher than average accident rates. Good to know this was just a minor mishap.

Why almost 200 trainers? 1. We need to train a lot more pilots. Intake can be increased. 2. Trainers get used heavily. More aircraft means flying hours per aircraft gets distributed, thus fleet will last a while. And more numbers cater to maintenance schedules. Batches of trainees need to be trained...

Keeping away from getting too deep into the diesel sub vs SSN debate, it is pertinent to note the scenario I am talking about. @RajitO A CBGs surface ASW is completely independent of the presence of a friendly SSN. Think of it as two rings. The SSN is the outer ring and the pointed edge. It will 'sanitise' the area ahead while the surface ASW watches close and the 'six o clock'. The combat radius of the CBG air wing is ~850...

I am not all that worried about the lack of a CIWS currently. The carrier has a good two years to go before its completely operational with a trained airwing and P-15A escorts with LRSAMS. The CIWS will be installed by then, The VIK does not have to undergo a major refit for this. What is MOST worry...
