Hate to spoil the joke...but it was the graphite particles which were geting ingested in the delicate instruments onboard which lead to americans develop the pen.

nitin, unarmed combat has always been a part of our armed forces. all the things you mention are taught to soldiers. search the archives, SF thread and you will find previous discussions on this topic.
