Re: Indian Army: News & Discussion

I am yet to find a country which could mark its place on the world world do it with business alone. Britain started in India with the East India Company (a group of traders), but finally they too had to run the show using the help of the soldier. It is high time the modern-day banias of India recog...

Re: Newbie Corner & Military Miscellaneous

I have a newbie question. For deals such as Su-30MKI license production in HAL, how does it work out? We sign a contract of say $X mil/plane. Initially, we get planes in knockdown kits and HAL assembles but then HAL starts manufacturing most of the components locally. Who do we pay? Sukhoi? HAL? spl...

Re: Are We Ready for a Two-front War ?

I dont know how many of us have visited Mt. Kailash and Manasarovar via lipulekh pass in Uttarakhand. One can view the road infrastructure. Lots of roads and bridges are being build. There is a road right all the way right up to the pass @17,500 ft. A bus awaits for the pilgrims right at the bottom...

Re: Are We Ready for a Two-front War ?

Why advertise? We (Indians) do not trust the Chinese or Pakistanis to tell the truth. But we trust Indians to tell the truth. This is another instance of a cognitive trap in which we say " Indians are telling the truth about NFU and the Pakis and Chinese too will believe that and will make the...

Re: Are We Ready for a Two-front War ?

China and Pakistan need to know that in order to do a combined attack on India they had better plan a nuclear attack right from the beginning. Losing such a war while we debate the philosophy of a Pakistan China attack cannot be an option. Shiv Saar And how do you propose GOI advertise this after t...

Re: Newbie Corner & Military Miscellaneous

A newbie question: Are tenders that foreign defense companies submit in USD? If yes, then in MRCA contract the real deal is about Indian Rupee vs the Supplier Currency fluctuation. Even if Euro has fallen 25%. INR has also fallen wrt USD from 1:39 to 1:47. Maybe foreign vendors will charge us fewer ...

Shiv Saar, AN32:IAF :: Vikrant(AC):IN (This ratio proportion equation does not work out) I believe you are missing the point, and with respect may I point out that you have applied madrassa math. I will explain. By madrassa math I mean "I have have 6 sons. It is OK if two of them die. If I had...

Re: Newbie Corner & Military Miscellaneous

we could extend the logic of this question to other things like: "What's the point dropping bombs from and An 32 when it would get shot out of the sky the minute it tries to enter hostile airspace". In fact one person had argued in the Military Aviation thread that within minutes of war b...

Re: Newbie Corner & Military Miscellaneous

But after the confirmation of sinking of the Ghazi, the Vikrant was freed up to attack targets in BDesh. Now why was the Indian navy not afraid of the other subs that Pakistan had? The sinking of the Ghazi was not the end of the Pakistani submarine threat. The most likely explanation is that the Gh...

Re: Newbie Corner & Military Miscellaneous

@ Shiv Saar Saar i understand the profit/risk analysis but if 1 PNS Ghazi can increase the risk so much as to make us banish our AC to ANC, then how about 30-40 chink subs if they start operating in IOC during war time. If you lose your carrier, you cannot use it. That means that you can only use yo...

Re: Newbie Corner & Military Miscellaneous

I have a question as a newbie. I have read several accounts of 1971 war where INS Vikrant was taken to an unknown location near ANC when PNS Ghazi was on prowl. Did IN not have efficient anti-sub force in 1971? Could we have used Foxtrot class in ASW role? How about any air-based ASW or ASW Corvette...

@ Gagan With my limited knowledge: ELDR (extremely low dose rate) affects chip characteristics differently. So tests done by firing huge radiation dose do not accurately reflect the Total Ionization tolerance (and hence the life of a particular IC in say a satellite). Do we have machines and time fo...

I was just pondering over how the naval strategies and surface combatants have evolved from Yamato class IPN BS. Those beasts were amazingly loaded but convincingly beaten by air power and submarines.

Re: Indian Naval Discussion

I was doing an internship at BHEL 10 years back. Most babus and workers alike would just drink tea and eat paans. The designs were flowing in from their European partners (Siemens, Alstom etc.) and the engineers at BHEL (on which 100's of crore of R&D is spent) just signed at the bottom and gave...
