Re: MRCA News and Discussion - March 2011
^^ The Gripen NG technololgy demonstrator (Gripen Demo) should be evolving nicely, adding more and more of the final Gripen NG configuration as th eproject progresses. It will however never be a true NG as it is based on a modified Gripen C/D airframe. One of the latest "bids" regarding th...

Well... I will not take the bait or will I, since the comment on "others" seems to be aimed at my recent post. Sure I am Gripen biased, its a wonderful product in many respects an some of us Swedes (shocking isnt it) are actually proud of the achievement that is Gripen (we are probably not...

Re: MRCA Discussion - October 2, 2010
To be honest the IACCS and AFNET thing sound more like the sort of communication solution put in place to meet National Security protection needs, i.e. a Civil Defence solution. On the other hand the info given in the links above is very limited so it is hard to actually have an opinion on its capab...

Re: MRCA Discussion - October 2, 2010
Ideally there should be a strict company code of conduct in place curbing any bribes regardless to what intent the are aimed.
The worrying thing is that if anyone is prepared to pay for such a slight advantage... what will they also be willing to do to "win" the deal.

Re: MRCA Discussion - October 2, 2010
I think what Doddel is trying to say is that TIDLS allows a group of four Gripen as an example perform by combining active and passive sensors to a level which is much higher than what usually can be expected without AWACS support by sharing data seamlessly. For instance combining the target data ac...

^^ In the early days of Gripen and EF (or what was on the table at that time, ACA, P.106 or other) development it was planned to jointly develop some of the general systems. Due to constant delays of the start date for what eventually became the EF programme, Saab had to move ahead with the Gripen d...

^^^Even with NVG it would be difficult due to limitations in the field of view and stereoskopic performance, i.e. it would be hard to judge speed, distance and position in a good way as well as too easy to loose visual fix on your opponent. Re: MRCA Discussion - October 2, 2010
The Gripen doesn’t have the disadvantage of poor avionics. In fact quite the opposite. It will have the Skyward-NG IRST being developed by Selex and will be quite a handful in close combat for sure. The ES-05A Raven will likely detect the target at BVR distance. Excellent sensor fusion between the ...

Now I assume these figures include everything, training of crews, fuel, maintenance, spare parts etc. I'll try to dig out some numbers for Gripen C/D in the Swedish Air Force. Back in 1998 the semi official Gripen comparison numbers from the SwAF was 1/3 of the cost of f18 (not SH) and 1/6 of the c...

Re: MRCA Discussion - October 2, 2010
Also, I have this speculation that the maximum (if not sustained) g-limit with full load does not have to decrease so much compared to Gripen C, if the added weigth is carried on the wing, since it is the wing itself and not the body that will have to lift that weight. This is not true :) Wherever ...

Also look at platform maturity - the EF, Rafale, the SH have all been flying extensively, hence extensive records are being generated on their mission rates, spares burn, their bugs, their flaws, none of these currently exist for the new build Gripen NG and MiG-35. As for the Gripen NG most of the ...

When looking at the MRCA, we also have to think about the versions IAF will get. IAF will be getting the "fullest" planned configuration of these aircrafts: * Rafale F3 standards * Eurofighter Tranche 3 standards The building nations spent a lot of their resources to induct in F1, F2, Tra...

With the latest inrush of Stealth comments I just want to add one thing. For the older strealth designs such as F117 and B2 they require extensive prepping to meet their full stealth potential. Re: MRCA Discussion - October 2, 2010
Whether a plane weighs 10,000kg or 25,000kg is basically irrelevant except to the extent it can carry the needed weapons and has room for future upgrades. It is relevant as it has an impact on the costs too. Costs to maintain a twin-engined plane, additional spares, bigger cross section etc. ^^ The...

Re: MRCA Discussion - October 2, 2010
The Gripen is probably the most vulnerable of all of them because the Swedes don't actually own that much of it except the airframe itself. The engine is US, the radar is Italian, the missile is German, etc. It gives you more points of failure. Even though Saab does not own the IPR to most equipmen...

The best seems to be EF and Gripen. There was an article sometime back that both EF and SAAB agreed that to re-engine Gripen with EJ-200 was very easy, but they will do it only if there is a demand from any of the interested customers. I had a discussion regarding the EJ-200 compatibility with F404...
