South Africa has halted its mass vaccination plans after Oxford-Astrazeneca vaccine tests on the south african variant gave dissatisfying results. They are looking for another vaccine that works on that variant.

The b117 strain is predicted to become dominant by march. Another source predicts it will be dominated by mid-feb itself.

None of the current vaccines have been satisfactorily effective against b117. Even if Oxford jab is 20% effective against the new strain, it is better than nothing.

Chinas sinovac vaccines have become the most widely used vaccine in middle-poor income countries, beating Oxford's vaccine by a huge margin. Sinovac is currently processing orders of around 200m doses by various countries in south America, middle-east and south east Asia.
