Smoking is bad for health
Smoking is bad for health - whether it is people or fighters. During the Vietnam war, one of the two significant weaknesses of the F-4 Phantom included smoky engines. While a magnificent aircraft, one of its many nicknames was "Old Smoky" and the smoke from the J-79 engines could be seen ...

Have the MiG29 issues been rectified?
Vishnu, lucky you :P great summaries. A few questions. The MiG 29 had numerous issues including 1. smoky engines (reminds one of the F-4 Phantom in Vietnam) 2. short engine life 3. lack of parts reliability etc 4. short range The IAF went thro a lot to rectify these problems. Has the 35 overcome the...

The idea of raising a "Gujjar Scouts" is brilliant. The IA has used the Gujjars regularly for scouting and intelligence. This will make it more formal as well as provide these scouts with the right training.

Ray, this opinion comes from an arm chair officer while you are a real one. I think the idea of doing an RMA like the US and talking of revamping equipment and buying more toys for the armed forces is fundamentally flawed. It is also how business has been done for many decades now. I think the logic...

Vishnu, again being nit picky - a strike package (as invented by the USAF) typically is a larger group of aircraft of different types/roles to facilitate a successful strike mission. Re: Indo-French exercises: Mixed results
Vishnu, this might be a nit to pick, but I wouldnt call those two aircraft pairs a strike package.
From what you wrote it looks like the Jags were not bounced and did hit the target - which is a good sign.
Did the 27s make it to the target and egress successfully ?

Thats why India has the ALH (utility + armed chopper) and then the gunship that is evolving from the ALH.
As I had suggested in a thread long time ago a good name for the gunship would be ALAH (Advanced Light Attack Helicopter)......... would put the fear of God into the pukis........
