We are told that 50% of the light coming out of our lamps is Soviet nuclear weapons. This has a depressing effect on demand for US-produce

Unrelated, but where does the 50% number come from? This states that its 20%... perhaps you meant 50% of the 20% is from FSU weapons?

Since our technical capability to build and deliver a bomb is well known, the lack of credibility can only come from THE PERCEPTION OF A LACK OF WILL. This is a potentially catastrophic slippery slope we are on - when our own people question our will to act in the event of a nuclear strike. This is...

A related question: As per Indian law, when is approval from Parliament required? Is my understanding that the PM is free to conclude treaties without explicit approval from the Parliament? I realize that members can demand a discussion on it and force the issue based on a motion and that PM cant co...

Resurrecting an old thread... It seems that Mumbai Police has done the decent thing: they have equipped all their mobile police vans with GPS receivers. The police control room is equipped with a NOC-type giant display that updates the location of all vans in real time. The idea in theory is that wh...

Could you please post the link for the following:
From that one report that AK has declared this deal as a good deal, it is probably time to celebrate.

I have to agree with vnadendla. no point howling at this point without full details placed on the table @ parliament house. While I agree that more details need to come out before we can justify our chest beating, I sincerely doubt if all the details will be placed before Parliament. MMS is not beh...

You havent heard from AK because he is not allowed to speak. He is in US in a sort of "observatory" capacity. Until he gets back, there wont be a word from him. By that time I think will be too late and the horse will have bolted. If the deal is so bad I think the SciCom should collectivel...

Manav:

Thanks for the clarification, I was not aware of what you said. It sheds a different light, subject to it being true, and it probably never will be confirmed.

I better stop here about my views, since it is not germane to the nuke topic.

What is sad and interesting is the whole reprocessing issue is being made to appear as if these are new "demands" from the Indian side, and that its the Indian side thats being made to appear as if its playing hard ball and being recalcitrant. The opposite is of course, true since all the ...

The power shortage of 7000+ MW in Maharashtra is nothing short of criminal. From the SS-BP bungling of Enron, to the criminal neglect shown by Vilasrao Deshmukh, things have gone from bad to absolutley abominable. In fact, the apathy shown by Vilasrao and the absolutely bungling of everything admini...

http://www.suchetadalal.com/articles/display/757/2461.article Good article on narco-analysis and its validity. I always wondered as to why there was a sudden rush to use this method. I am in two minds whether to like it or not. On one hand it seems more humane than the savage beatings that a suspec...

I am pretty sure that this has been discussed before but I havent yet figured out an answer to this and nor do I expect to. The calculations in the earlier posts by abhischekcc describe how enemys costs are increased by a marginal increase in the kill probability. It is correct, but I think only if ...

Kohinoor and the Queen

Is it just me that finds the idea of this Queen Mother being laid to rest with the Kohinoor diamond sitting on top of her coffin particularly odious? I am the first to admit that I don't know the law in these matters, but technically, wasnt this diamond stolen from India? What right does this Queen,...

Re: Bombing Bombay? - Study of n-holocaust

Sunil, I think, as a first order of business you should first decide on ground zero for a 15 Kt explosion. The location of ground zero would be immaterial for say, a 5 Mt nuke or a couple of 200 Kt nukes, but is essential for a solitary 15 Kt nuke. That done, we can then analyze with a map as to wha...

Re: Bombing Bombay? - Study of n-holocaust

At the outset, let me point out that I agree with Guru: no one will attack Mumbai with just one warhead of 15 Kt. If its a Chinese attack, they will use at least a 200 Kt warhead, if not a 1 Mt warhead. If its Pakistan, it will be 2-3 warheads of around 15 Kt each, at targeted at BARC, Dadar and Sou...
