Re: The Road to World Power

Hi,
I agree largely with Abhishekcc. China is a closed country whose government controls what is reported and what isn't. hence we hear only about the "good" things that are happening there and nothing whatsoever about the darker side. India is an open country and government's actions ...

Re: The Road to World Power

I didn't want to say this but... the Ambanis are a bunch of hypocrites. They weren't above using the mafia to further their interests and also successfully used politics to kill any competition they had in India and also to block anything unfavourable to them....I suppose this is all in the "na...

Re: The State of Indian Science

Samudragupta,
I could'nt agree with you more. I also do believe that it is neccesary for the top science places in India to run undergraduate programs. However, I am fairly sure that there is opposition to this within the institutes themselves. For example, IISc used to run undergrad. engineerin...

Re: The State of Indian Science

While there is a good deal of the sort of cross citation that James and Vraghav talk about, it is still true that scientists in the U.S come up with a large amount of very original work.
James,
I'm curious how you came up with the figure that you mentioned.
Re: The State of Indian Science

Hi Shiwaji,
I was not referring to the computational math institute, but rather to the recommendation to spin off the bio sciences at TIFR into a separate entity altogether. This has happened partially, with the formation of NCBS at Bangalore under Prof. Obaid Siddiqui, though many TIFR faculty ...

Re: The State of Indian Science

GD,
TIFR is at most nominally funded by the Tatas. It is a central government run research institute and receives about 60-70 Crores in funding every year. These funds are mostly from the DAE and are very liberal given its size. (IITS get about 20 Cr. apiece when I last knew. They are really str...

Re: The State of Indian Science

Hi,
Here are some statistics that I have culled from various articles in the journal Nature, about Indian science.
"India has fallen from the Eighth largest publishing nation in the world to the 12th largest with just a 2% share of the world's journal articles- a significant drop from 2...

Re: The State of Indian Science

Guru Dronacharya,
You are right that practically all scientists are absorbed in Government institutions. However, it is not correct that there is no place for new people. In fact, the outlook article points out that the science laboratories are in need of new people. The sad fact is that while I...

Re: The State of Indian Science

Salman,
It would be nice if you can dig up the information you collected. I also spent a good part of my childhood in one of the best research institutes in india (iisc) and I also have come to believe that there is something missing in the functioning of research institutes in india. I found a ...

Re: Nuke angle to Kargil crisis

K Subrahmanyam has given a series of interviews in Rediff about the Kargil episode and the attitudes in India (among the ruling classes and the media as he puts it.). He does seem to believe that the Pakistani adventure in Kargil was based on the (irrational) assumption that there will be little ind...

Re: Bombing Bombay? - Study of n-holocaust

Sunil : I have a couple of questions for you.
1. Your entire disaster management scenario is based on the assumption that you can use the people already affected by radiation fatally in the LONG TERM for disaster management. There is a real probability that they might completely refuse to cooper...

Re: Indian Nuclear Weapons FAQ

I have some questions:
1. even with a command and control structure in place, is it possible for the main centres in india (parliament, secretariat, bombay etc) to be protected by a preemptive set of measures in case of a nuclear attack?
2. If this is not possible (I think it is not because ...
