JF-17 is all metal it will always be heavier than high composite LCA Tejas, while Russian Tech is improving I suspect in case of this Rd-93 it probably have lower MTBF. Still, it is probably an improvement in maneuverability over the existing JF-17 models? The point of comparison is the baseline JF...

Jags with high wing loading can do it (LCA cannot, very low wing loading, it will crash if flies near the ground with so much turbulence, or the pilot would have separate barf bag attached to his suite). pVgSlaNXHeg NoE flying for delta wings is mitigated to a great extent by FBW (starts at 1:10) k...

A lot of that originally quoted price is the cost of imported components. I wouldn't be surprised if HAL leans on the govt. to separately procure the engines and other imported items and then reduces the price appropriately. I don't begrudge the IA better arms. I only resent their (to me) cavalier attitude when actually making the selections. There seems to be no long term plan, no research. The IA has thousands if not 10 of thousands of people working in machine shops and armories. They have a budget of 10 of thousands...

Re: Small Arms Thread

I'm very sure that's not it. IIRC One of the reasons to justify the calibre change was the 7.62x51 had terminal ballistics which penetrated flesh but did not cause great wound damage before passing through the body. The justification for 5.56x45 was that it's terminal ballistics caused it to tumble ...

Too true. Someone may have seen the brochure for the Baretta ARX160 and sent that onwards and upwards to an RFP. Eventually the ARX 160 ended up as the ARX 200 for the 7.62x51 calibre. Presently the ARX 160 can only do 5.56x45 and 7.62x39 and ONLY with a complete Barrel + Bolt + Lower receiver chang...

Re: Small Arms Thread

So 20 years ago the IA decided they wanted to retire their 7.62 x 51 FN FAL's (Ishapore 1A1) in favour of the 5.56 x 45 NATO. Some of the reasons given among many IIRC was that they wanted to reduce the burden on soldiers by using lighter calibre ammo and they wanted a more modern calibre ballistics...

Airflow does not magically change direction to be parallel to the wing when AoA is changed for a climb rotation, then change dire...

The "airflow" is the headwind (either due to the movement of ship or natural wind blowing or both), flowing horizontally; when the a/c takes off, this wind hits the bottom of the wing surface. Because of this, apart from the normal lift, the wing produces additional lift like that of a ki...

No idea - don't even know if an EMALS can be be made to work efficiently on a ski-ramp. Theoretically it should be possible. Everything else will have to be tested once (if) the EMALS on ski-jump ever becomes reality.

Moving on from blather, my main point still stands.

If an EMALS can be added to a ski-jump, you can get the required velocity and AoA from a shorter take-off run leaving the landing strip free for another waist located EMALS and a pocket sized USN type carrier - amongst other options.

It makes no sense. The cat has enough power to get any aircraft up to flight speed, and you dont need the ski jump. The ski jump takes up parking space.
