If IAF wants a Highly Customised Aircraft like MKI or FGFA or Tejas it will have to be involved in debugging and fine tuning it after all the customer has to be involved in what it wants , If it wants a proven product like Rafale or SEF with little or no change then it can afford to have a hands off...

They were shot in anger by IAF because the Paki Mil Jihadi shot down Mig-21 and brutally killed the pilot iirc shot in the back when he ejected and landed. PAKDA(or B2) are too costly to be fielded in large numbers for the bush wars of the future. has the B1 or even the B52 been thrown away because of B2 or LRSB? a segment exists for a proven performer like blackjack and backfire loaded to the gunwales with conventional weapons. perhaps also act...

Re: Indian Missiles News and Discussions - May 2017

Let me state (for the second time) that I am taking in relative terms here. An air launched missile is not a SAM. It is not of the size of a SAM. There are design, weight, and margins that are different from a SAM as should be obvious. And as far as agility vis-a-vis this particular weapon, I'm in ...

Re: Indian Missiles News and Discussions - May 2017

Again Agility of weapons has nothing to do with its size else all the SAMS in the world wont be agile because most have large diameter and these will be in 7-8 '' class ! Warhead size depends on the volume and the target you want to attack , if you want a SSKP for any large target you need a bigger ...

Austin, Opponents, capability, affordability all should dictate the force mix. Re: Indian Missiles News and Discussions - May 2017

You do realize that I am specifically referring in relative terms here right? So if it is so agile, like a modern SAM as you say, why can it only go after 8G aircraft at reduced range, and why does it need a warhead 3 times larger than a conventional BVRAAM? Your article basically confirms what I h...

Re: Indian Missiles News and Discussions - May 2017

It is entirely conceivable that it has 200+ km range against largely cooperative targets and 150 km range against maneuvering, supersonic-capable targets. In fact that makes a lot more sense given the size. But like I said, a heavier, large diameter missile is still not an optimal solution as a BVR...

Re: Indian Missiles News and Discussions - May 2017

Those ranges don't make sense (180-200 km for AWACS and 150 km for fighters). Are those official data or a guess? 150 km vs 180/200 km is something likely 30-40 seconds of additional cruise. Against a maneuvering target the effective range is likely less, or conversely the range against a slow mane...

Re: Su-30: News and Discussion - August 9, 2014

Fully agree with OPEX eating into CAPEX. This is a balance all companies, all functioning entities must make. That said, OPEX can be capped by increase in productivity. For example, if a single Su-30 MKI can perform the tasks of five MiG-21s then the OPEX can be kept in check by a numerically small...

Re: Su-30: News and Discussion - August 9, 2014

Point to consider is Operational cost would matter for the airforce as bulk of its fleet/weapon is imported or of foreign design and Fuel Price is not in control of GOI. For most part of major decade SE Mig-21 formed more than 50 % of IAF fleet strength .........The only twin engine fighter IAF flew...

There is no ready KS-172. The new Russian long range AAM is this one, advertised for the Su-35 as well.
