CPEC is really a strategic move and not a financial move.

The port serves as a naval base and the roads and infra are simply land acquisition akin to what happened to Hong Kong. As the defaults star rolling in, Pakistan will pay with land.

I know right. 14-15% should be the maximum. I find it hilarious that chocolate is taxed at 18% and eating in an a/c restaurant is taxed at 18%. Since when is an a/c luxury in India (maybe it was in the 90s)? Even in winter its 20-25c and in summer temperatures reach over 40c.

VAT in UK isn't a flat rate of 20% on everything. Food and medicine is zero rated. Energy - gas and electricity is taxed at 5%.

Only things that are not a basic necessity for survival are taxed at 20%. Even so, 20% is it. There are no higher rates and there are no hidden taxes on everything ie cess

Cash is still king. For all the talk of cashless, India has made little progress. The only way to push cashless is to stop the use of large denomination notes. Get rid of 2000 to start with. I get the feeling that the price rises attributed to GST is a lie. Some food shops are actually under reporting revenue by as much as 50% to lower tax incurred. I've seen this in 2 shops in bangalore So if they buy 100 kg of food, they ask the supplier for an invoice of 50kg and pay for the other 50...

Even a nominal rate of 100/day will dissuade a few people. this can be progressively increased. As long as people see that the money raised is used for public good, there will be some acceptance.

At present cess is only on goods with 28%. But Rate of cess is different and is supposed to be charged to compensate for loss in revenue.
