Re: Indian Navy News & Discussion - 12 April 2021

There are supposed to be over 60-69 ships currently under construction for the Indian Navy. I can gather only the following projects, which are currently on going. Does anyone have information about other projects that are currently under construction: 1). P17A - 7 ships (4 at MDL, 3 GRSE) 2). Shal...

Re: Indian Navy News & Discussion - 12 April 2021

Some version of a ISR and weapon capable VTOL drone is a must to mitigate blade folding issues with helos like the Dhruv. Regardless of the problems faced with the Chetak/ NRUAV many years ago, the control system issues have been resolved. One wonders why the IN does not see fit to revive the Chetak...

For those that insist on certain costs of weapons systems today based on historical pricing data from many years ago, please understand that the defence-aerospace world and rest of industry for that matter operates on the principle of price escalation every year. In other words, prices invariably go...

The realistic costs of the Scorpene program are now known. Still cheaper than the (usually) overoptimistic estimates for the P75I. Moreover, the local industrial ecosystem is in place to build as much of these boats as possible in country. That has to be the way forward. Anyhow, domestic shipbuildin...

Ordering more 3+3 Scorpenes in progressively updated batches/tranches is a no-brainer. There is not much to debate here is there? It would be a sad case of bad history repeating itself if the Scorpene line is allowed to die by the MoD though inaction. Acquiring more used/refurbed Kilos (877 or 636) ...

Re: Indian Navy News & Discussion - 03 July 2018

The simplest way to have proceeded with the 5-ship FSS (fleet tanker/replenishment ship) deal was to have Fincantieri design a longer version of the Deepak class, suitably updated with current tech, and have 4 of them built in India and 1 in Italy to keep everyone happy. Alternatively, a locally des...

This deal was likely to suffer from political fallout such as this. Why does the IN and MoD simply not build larger/longer versions of the two Deepak class AORs with the appropriate mods ?
