Re: Indian Missiles and Munitions Discussion - June'14
IMO ... Canisterization is an important step before deploying the missiles on submarines and road/rail mobile launchers. However, until the missile is successfully tested from an actual submarine and it can consistently lift-off and reach any point within the specified range, it cannot be considered...

Re: Indian Space Programme Discussion
The question is this. In an aeroplane you put the propeller in the nose (mostly), but in a ship you always put the propeller in the stern. Why? :P And maybe another quiz, since you talked about stability and stuff. How does a submarine remain upright ? What stops it from rolling? (remember, there i...

True HKumar. I just read that it shaved off 600 lbs.
As to the GSLV-MkIII, is it a passive CUS or is it another single vikas stage? I'm confused as to why there would be an engine bell if it is a passive CUS.

Re: Indian Space Programme Discussion
Could it be that the CUS are black and since this is a dummy stage, it is painted white? That said, why is the CUS black? Any particular reason like that of the Shuttle's external tank being orange.

Re: Indian Space Programme Discussion
Prasanna, I thought that NASA has always used tracked crawlers from the Apollo days. Russian launchers have always been moved on rail and that too horizontally. I too have the same question as to how these tall structures stay vertical though the crawlers move very very slowly. I don't see any stay ...

Re: Indian Space Programme Discussion
SM at the bottom and the CM on top (wider, re-entry end at the bottom) makes for the most compact stack, still leaving the docking port open. Plus, you'd want the CM at the top for less effort on the part of the CES.

Re: Indian Space Programme Discussion
^^^ The above picture makes much more sense than the earlier diagram, it looked like the crew module re-entry surface was attached to the service module directly, and the point of contact was solid. (if they pull it off it is an engineering marvel ). That is how it will be in future manned...

Folks,
What is the black conical thing on which the crew module is mounted? Is it just a payload mount?

LokeshC, I don't think it is elitist at all. Yes, postings in any language could be translated with today's technology. But, should this forum be one where people post in a variety of languages? On the other hand, the Patrika.com is itself in Hindi. Hope this doesn't turn into another Hindi vs Non-H...

so they dont go through all these when they are culled for consumption ???? You eat them when they are alive ??? I was looking for a smart exchange of points and counter-points. Eating an animal alive will heighten all of the "these". But, you knew that, right? The point that I was making...

regarding animal rights, they can take a walk. if India is that bothered, then we can't be culling and eating animals in the first place.. can't have them as stray animals on the street etc. it is all perspectives. as long as we have minimal abuse taken care, and data collection happens, it is enou...

Re: Indian Space Programme Discussion
At some point, India should stop reinventing the wheel in the name of patriotism and focus on substance. Calling Indian astronauts as "Astronauts" is somehow diminishing the effort or the prestige involved in this exercise? Just because Chinese are calling their astronauts as taikonauts, i...

Re: LCA News and Discussions, 22-Oct-2013
Why do I get the feeling that the Naval LCAs , seem better area ruled and more pleasing to the eye than the air force versions? In general, a cockpit that is curved from the fuselage makes for a better looking plane. I know it is subjective but that is what I have noticed. Putting 2 people in the c...

Apologies if this has already been asked and answered. But, why is the photograph by MOM so blurry? Is it because it has not yet been calibrated once on station? Or, has the photograph not gone through its required processing yet?

Not mispronounce but pronounce it differently. That is a politically correct way of describing mispronunciation. :) :) After battling people in US for 20 years when they say that our pronunciation of "schedule" is "incorrect", I try not to make the same mistake as them. Worse is...

For a moment, there were no countries, no squabbles, no political boundaries. Just people supporting each other and working together. Felt wonderful. The power of education removes pettiness in the world.

vina, SriKumar seems to have researched and found the same graphic that I was looking at. While you are right that MAVEN could have been heavier if NASA had orbited the Earth to build up velocity, one can also argue that a lot of the additional payload would have been the fuel to keep kicking the or...
