Re: Indo-UK News and Discussion - April 2013

London will continue to do well in FX trading, all pairs/currencies, but inspite of the huge volumes, that business has wafer thin margins. It will lose it's status as a Euro Clearing Center for Euro securities, because the ECB does not want any euro clearing done outside the Eurozone. (Quite a con...

With 54.5B$ total investment, once the Gwadar corridor is complete. Retaking PoK will be very very difficult me thinks. Best would be to make these projects nonstarters or make the progress painfully difficult that they are rolled back or left unfinished. Once they are complete, what are the chance...

Re: Indian Economy News & Discussion - Aug 26 2015

So are we saying debt investors are attracted to India only because inflation is under control ? I don't think so in the least....it is a combination of both strong monetary policy that has kept inflation under control (for which the RBI deserves credit) and India over the last 15 years having emer...

Re: Managing Chinese Threat (09-08-2014)

So if you read through that whole thing, the last sentence conveys the punch: Back off or we will sell US Treasury bonds. There goes the budget for the F-35 - 3 trillion dollars. I have seen variations of this arguments many times before but I don't think it makes much sense, at least in the curren...

Indian organizations targeted in Suckfly attacks The first known Suckfly campaign began in April of 2014. During our investigation of the campaign, we identified a number of global targets across several industries who were attacked in 2015. Many of the targets we identified were well known commerc...

Good interview with Anne Stevenson-Yang: http://www.chinafile.com/reporting-opinion/features/why-beijings-troubles-could-get-lot-worse I’d be shocked if China is currently growing at a rate above, say, 4%, and any growth at all is coming from financial services, which ultimately depend on sustained ...

Someone on the forum (this thread?) recommended The Motion Mountain book.
Cannot seem to find the post but wanted to say thanks. Have been going through it and it has been an absolute pleasure so far.

Re: Indian Economy - News & Discussion Oct 12 2013

If it is really a "quanto" product like you say it is, then the first thing the RBI should do is BAN it. The buyer in a quanto is insulated from currency risks, which means, the bond seller (here the IR and hence the govt) takes that risk, even if the underlying is in rupees. Not in this ...

Interesting, thanks. But please see the following post I made a few days ago with a news article on the topic: link While it may be outside our purview now, GoI does not seem to be comfortable with the current situation and wants masala bond settlement to be within their control. The article is tal...

Re: Indian Economy - News & Discussion Oct 12 2013

They're still subject to RBI regulation, right ? No, they won't be. The RBI's wants to prevent hot money coming in, pushing up the INR, and one day leaving suddenly. The whole process would be destabilising. So we have the investor quotas. Foreign FIs are required to register themselves with the RB...

Re: Indian Economy - News & Discussion Oct 12 2013

Masala bonds are issued and listed offshore, for offshore investors, so I don't think the limits would apply. I think the only Masala bond issuance so far has been the IFC issuance last year. Great development in either case. I think it will be well received and show the way for more Indian entities...

Re: Indian Space Programme Discussion

In view of changes in the Russian space programme on Moon, its agreement with Isro was further being delayed. "It means virtually we won't get a lander from Russia till 2017. So, we are planning to a develop a lander ourselves," I wonder if it would be feasible for ISRO to outsource the l...

Suraj,
which part do you find to be political/politically partisan?

As for his job description, I do not know what that is but I have seen other central bankers also make speeches on topics other than monetary policy.

Would also like to add a comment on his monetary policy. There is no doubt that lower interest rates would help the real economy immediately, especially real estate and infrastructure which sorely need lower borrowing costs. However, the way I see it, he is trying to fix a much bigger and long term ...

Re: Indian Economy - News & Discussion Oct 12 2013

Apropos the Raghuram Rajan speech, having read the whole thing, I am unable to understand what the whole controversy is about. He was making a point about political economy, borrowing ideas from Fukuyama. That people somehow connected the Hitler reference to the Modi govt. is beyond ridiculuous. As ...
