NRao, seems there are lot of projects DRDO is pursuing with academia, couldn't find if those projects can be tracked though.

Re: NAL Saras Project demise:Root Cause discussion.

They should have asked for funds to complete third plane. There are two sides of it: 1. Designer asked for funds and Remember Saras is a very old project (started in early 1990s) and no national pride was associated by GoI to it as is in the case of Kaveri, Tejas et al. In this context it is quiet ...

GunterH, 1. lets not mix Scientists and Engineers, both have quiet distinct roles and if you really want to see a Scientist/Engineer better visit an ISRO centre. Please have a look at the mandate of NAL's inception. http://nal.res.in/pages/mandate.htm The three mandates seem to be in chronological o...

Re: MBT Arjun - News and Discussions

I have known an ex-Army who has test driven the Arjun on multiple occasions (Vijayanta, 72 among others), and he was all praise for the handling (read steering, and bracking specifically) characteristics of Arjun as compared to the others. He went on to say that shifting gears is Makhan and very qui...

Re: Indian Military Aviation - 21 Sept 2015

Exactly, why would anyone want to spoil one's career when projects are stopped/cancelled for no apparent reason.? Why would anyone from political establishment be interested in national dreams anyways? What do they know about what should be the pace of a civil aircraft program with 50 mil dollars? O...

Re: Indian Space Programme Discussion

PS 4 propellant loading for C31 is 2.5 t as compared to 1.6 t of C30.
Edit: Which would mean a longer burn duration of PS 4 stage and hence more dV imparted to satellite before separation.

Re: Kaveri & aero-engine discussion

NRao, Agree that accepting the failure to achieve what we wanted to is not wrong but it also is a very difficult thing to do. Morever my point is to power 20-30 planes with the K9 version so that lot of data can be generated today and not tomorrow (when K10 will come we don't know) in the real condi...

Now leaving that slightly behind, I believe that you would agree it is extremely important to generate data on your first design and make it pukka before moving to next phase.there ar...

Re: Kaveri & aero-engine discussion

Does it really matter that engine is over weight by 150-200 kgs .. or it is 10 % below the expected thrust levels?? I don't think so. It is kind of 1st design of this class of engine and it works. How can we expect it to be as designed. More important is? 1. Is the engine reliable? 2. Can we put it ...

Well we only had a few decades and our focus have been on lots of other areas as well. Even HAL would not have existed if not for the British/U.S./WW2 etc.. And most of the wind tunnels in the US are pre 1940s when aeronautical research was going at a great pace. Most of the airfoil data bases were ...

Re: Indian Military Aviation - 21 Sept 2015

@indranil, The new tail configuration might have to do with spin recovery. See this video at 2:30 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCG5xdy4k10 . It seems that this particular configuration results only in steep spin and not the flat one. Also T tail has problems with early stall but has little to do ...

vina, weakass-ness of engines (if you compare N2O4/UDMH vs LOX/RP-1 based engines) has nothing to with the propellant used. both of these propellant combination have very little different in specific impulse (316s for RD-253(Proton 1st stage) and 335 for SCE-200(ISRO's SC Engine)) to make any signif...

ELM-2052 is 80-180 kgs depending on antenna size against that of 2032 which is 72-100 kgs according to the IAI brochure. So it should be taking 1/3rd of the ballast weight.

Re: LCA Tejas: News and Discussions

Weight reduction with re-arrangement of some of the sub-systems (which is being planned) may result in insignificant change in CG at aircrafts dry weight (which will be lower finally). This might lead to removal of ballast as well (and hence 300 kg net gain :) ).

Better still, get rid of those two huge low isp solid booster and cluster two of those 2MN Lox/hydrocarbon engines , together with the CE 20 stage will give a launcher with a performance equivalent or better than the Saturn V, and will be very efficient. Saturn V's 5 F-1 Engines produce >6MN each, ...

Looking at the time gap between PS4 shut-off and re-start, which is ~46minutes (1/2 of the orbital period for the altitude at which satellites will be injected for this mission) and will bring the PS4 stage at diametrically opposite end (apogee /perigee) of the orbit. I hope ISRO is providing the same level of attention to more powerful EPS devices as to GSLV Mk3. It will take a lot less in terms of financial and human resources for maturing EPS technology to produce all-EPS satellites than a whole launch vehicle.
