Also, the reason for buying a mature platform in single engine category is becoming clear - "16 plus" tejas is the max realistic capability of the country right now for the foreseeable future.

If the priority is to boost IAF strength, then anything other than the F35 does not make sense. If priority is some sort of MII play, then it makes sense to buy the most mature platform, i.e F16. Unkil ji is ordering laddoos as we speak.

looks like we are guaranteed to increase the Rafale fleet beyond the 36 now. As an optimist, I can only say that this might be the beginning of a non-HAL military aerospace entity in India.

I am actually pretty excited that we are getting the rafale. It is a great plane, the absolute best 4+ gen fighter in terms of tech profile, and provides a guarantee of air superiority over the Chinese in the medium term until the FGFA/AMCA programs start manifesting.
