Re: Indian Missiles News & Discussions - 17 Dec 2018

PAF got Aim120 along with their F16 from Jordan. So there will be indirect supplies from US through Turkey & Jordan. Irrespective of the source, PAF will have a big bill. Which is why we need to send our jet near LoC/IB on a regular basis to make Pak use their jets and BVR. A "non-war"...

Re: India's R&D in Defence DRDO, PSUs and Private Sector

Everything depends on the budget allocation. I am firmly of the view that all Defence research, given the strategic nature, should be directly under PMO. Like ISRO. Every strategic projects be it nukes or SSBN have worked, because they are out of ministry politics and directly controlled by the head...

So it seems like we are ordering the same R-77 (not even R-77-SD which RuAF uses) or is it DDM @ work? Any ideas why IAF is not considering SD variant? The fact that we are now flight testing HSTDV, means atleast basic technical hurdles have been crossed and there is political approval (and funding).

So now all we have to do is increase the pace of testing, while our babus do their usual thing. Delaying discussion over chai biscoot..

The report only mentions the GaN tech was seeded by MoD at IISc. Actuallly it was DRDO funding of 10 crores in 2008-09, that laid the foundation.

A joint private+public funded foundry, led by private industry could help us gate crash the semiconductor SC.

It may be cheaper to create a SpaceX style re-usable booster, which carries 6-8 CM to a release height and drops them. Then lands back for the next round..

There will some drop in flexibility, however would be cheaper than maintaining a sqd of big bombers.

This PR about reducing defence budget means it is getting filled up other means.

The IMF deal is also in the pipeline, so US & Pak must have come up with a deal in Afghanistan.

Soon the Coalition "Support" fund will be restored. The defence budget must be getting filled up using CSF.

I always imagined a version of Barak8 for boost phase intercept of Pak BM. With 250-300Kg weight, it is in the ideal range.

With Brahmos integration, we have a hardpoint on Su30 which can carry 2.5 tons.

May be a bigger SFDR might be more sensible. Even better would be a hypersonic Scramjet AAM...

I take it will be a combination of Astra 1/2 and Derby on Su30. Replacing thousands of R77 will take a long time. Having two source of BVR will cover this. Also complicate counter measures for adversary with BVR types on Su30. DRDO should double down on SFDR. No point playing catch up, when IAF can ...

cross-post from su-30 thread: why not just put a big-ass booster on the Astra/R-77? Make it a longer ranged 2-stage weapon. Its not like the Su-30 lacks load carrying ability. These would be fired off at extreme range before the WVR merge. Frankly range is not the prime capability to get a BVR kill...

What does QRSAM do differently than Akash? Smaller missile, more rounds. Fire on the move as per IA requirements. Probably has faster reaction time as well. I am guessing the MFD and probably some avionics will require major changes to support the multitude of functions a AESA radar provides.
