Khalsa ji, you may be right, I suspect the same reason. It is direness of the situation that is driving these decisions.

Re: LCA: News & Discussions: 15 August 2017

But I guess the fear is somebody is not deciding fast enough to continue manufacturing mk1 in case mk1a gets delayed. It takes a lead time of 1-2 year for a plane to come to finishing line. If someone is going to wait for 2 years to see if LCA MK1A is on track or not and if delayed, order, we can on...

Re: VayuSena Rafale: News and Discussions - 17 Oct 2016

Naah my point is even more subtle, I don't think it's Mod slow decision making (which is definitely a factor), Qataris are not selling it, period. Whether we decide fast or slow, doesn't matter. Having said that, if they ever do, we should jump on that double fast.

Re: LCA: News & Discussions: 15 August 2017

su30mki ITSELF (@313 TOTAL, unless that is bad reporting, we have only ordered 273) is 17 SQ (@18 planes, as it does not need two trainers per sq). Add 2 Rafael, 3 mirages (the upgrade itself goes on for another 7-8 years), at least 2-3 sq of LCA (I would say all 6, but even if someone pulls the plu...

If I remember right the LCA CLAW is really made from readings in various regime and then an equation (or many in different regime) derived out of it (rather than finding a universal equation in all regimes). If it can super cruise with AL31FP, then we are fool not to pursue follow on to LCA, India's next generation SE 5th gen fighter. Re: LCA: News & Discussions: 15 August 2017

One good reason to go for AL31F will be to build a bigger LCA (MCA?) but keep everything else same, a 1.4 or 1.6 scale LCA. That way development effort is no different than it is between LCA mk 1 to LCA mk 2. This bigger LCA will give us more volume (more systems, bigger radar, more fuel, more hard ...

It will be a new aircraft LCA MK III AL 31FP is 60% more weight (and correspondingly big) compared to F404 but produces 50% more thrust (notice slight drop in efficiency, to give 50% more thrust, it is 60% more heavy). In all it can support LCA that is 50% more in size/weight etc. Same wing (in shap...

Re: LCA: News & Discussions: 15 August 2017

Also by hopping from F404 TO F414 to AL31F (that should be a natural progression, or AL-41F that comes with Super Sukhois upgrade), if we go directly to AL31F/AL41F we skip one generation. Yes the F404/f414 per kg of its size is more efficient/reliable/powerful than AL31F. So it is a matter of choice.

The LCA from engine pov has a route that can be sanction proof (and MOD/DRDO/ADA should as PoC explore this route) - Make LCA around AL31-F engine ( the same engine as SU30MKI, of which we are license building 960 of it and 50 we have produced from raw material). There is no choice but to go with Uttam. If both the AESA do not come through, put A-A Uttam not fully developed, have 2-3 full uttam teams chasing its development to completion. That is the only way forward. If you do not have radar and aa missiles to go with it, what was the point to indigenize?

What is CAG problem here. Precisely taking account of IAF history, IN ordered grand total of 40 missiles for it's equal number of eventual Mig 29K fleet, a missile per plane. Most likely it was an evaluation batch.

Astra is very good news indeed. Few more variant - passive, extended, dual mode etc. will go a long way. Now if Uttam gets inducted with a family of these missiles, we can truly control our destiny.

Simulated fight do not use actual missiles, one can feed brochure number and claim wins using that, but R-77 did fall short, by how much? well IAF, it is the user and hence knows the data is willing to just move on from that missile. I don't think AM is critical. What he says is right - HAL has not manufactured (dunno about HAWK and SU30MKI) planes where parts can be interchanged.
