Re: Time to rethink NFU

Ramana, There is an article in the Deccan Chronicle which also speaks about the same topic. The article is on the discussion on Karnad's book. My question is, doesnt this introduce instability? After all Pakistan has crossed many conceivable redlines for a first use by India. It is unlikely that the...

Re: Seismology for Dummies: Guesstimating nuke test yields

narayanan, as another dummy here, could you explain what you mean by the question about angle between the observer and the line joining the two points? if the observer is a point/symmetric one, i dont know how one defines the angle. additionally, it is true that if one is equidistant, one would not ...

Re: Seismology for Dummies: Guesstimating nuke test yields

In any case, the very fact that the seismic waves are of predominantly a single frequency, renders the argument of no interference invalid. If one has two signals of the same frequency, there is no question of a randomised phase relationship averaging out. Trivially, two single frequency signals alw...

Re: Seismology for Dummies: Guesstimating nuke test yields

A_Gupta, I dont understand what you mean by the statement that "how nuclear blast energy is converted into seismic waves is a stochastic process". If the blast is impulsive, how can it be stochastic-furthermore even if there is some randomness in the energy transfer, the timescale of it is...

Re: Seismology for Dummies: Guesstimating nuke test yields

A_Gupta, I dont quite understand the reason why you believe that there is no interference in this situation. Your statement about "spectral components with different phase relationships which cancel out" is essentially a restatement of your earlier statement that the sources are incoherent...

Re: Lost City found off the Mahabalipuram coast

Ramana, I know of an opera called "Padmavati" by Alfred Roussel which is based on an Indian story. Another is "savithri" by Gustav Holst which is the story of satyavan and savithri. One of the modern classical composers, Philip Glass has also composed an opera called "Satyag...

Re: Lost City found off the Mahabalipuram coast

narayanan, just as a sidetrack, the storyline of the opera is usually inconsequential (IMO), but the music it has been set to is what makes it "great" (Eg. Don Giovanni has some lovely music-again IMO also I cannot understand the language :) ). Thyagaraja has actually written one opera (or...

Re: Lost City found off the Mahabalipuram coast

This is really nice, first Dwaraka off the Gujarat coast and now this - looks like the many gaps in our history are getting closer to being filled a little more. I just hope this is also not used for political agendas.
