Re: Why has it become so cool to hate India
Untill India develops a 1 to 2 trillion dollar economy sab kuchh maya hai.Once that is done the Rupaiah will do more persuasive talking than the most eloquent and well-informed Indian. You see the economy is needed to boost India's standing not with only the west but the pen-to-paper-bypassingthehem...

Re: Time to rethink NFU
It would be understandable if India ammended NFU to exclude states that threaten it with first use. I don't think anybody but the Paks are going to bray about that one-but then Paks will bray about anything at the least pretext-one of those cultural things, I guess.

Re: Lost City found off the Mahabalipuram coast
Quick on the draw there, Kaushal. I don't know if C-14 is generated on earth's surface (?cosmic rays, upwelling from magma). If it is not, there has to be another explanation for C-14 to work as a dating tool. May have to do with the isotope effect i.e. enzymes do in fact differentiate between isoto...

Re: Lost City found off the Mahabalipuram coast
"It must have originated in the Sumerian civilization.. and been taken to India by the GREEKS, although no trace of it has ever appeared in Greek writings " A statement of breathtaking disingenuousness. Pease, please, write a missive to Sc Am, I have not even read the article and am tied u...

Re: Lost City found off the Mahabalipuram coast
"Would that sadden several?" Narayan_ L, you write well but the gratuitous "victim" persona is wearing a bit thin.Given the putatative antiquity of the site in Cambay,I suppose the same question can be posed of you. I have a little doubt of your stand. As a well-meaning point, th...

The sudden flood business may have been a tsunami that obliterated the population.

In an all-time ranking by medals, Romania occupies the 14-th position, out of 95 countries who have won Olympic medals.
SELF-FLAGELLATION ALERT. WE MUST CATCH UP TO ROMANIA.

Re: Avatar, Durga, Kali and much more
Ramana, I would only be too happy if your optimism were justified. However India has a meagre 1.5 ton to GSTO capability and these projects are extremely ambitious to get off the ground (pun intended).
There is no evidence of Indian capability in beam weapons or hypersonic aerobic vehicles except ...

Re: The State of Indian Science
For the nonscientists interested.
The productivity of an American scientist is perhaps 4 times the Indian i.e.he puts out an LPU (least publishable unit http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/ubb/wink.gif ) 4 times as frequently. The single most important factor in citation is self-citation (other than of c...

Re: The State of Indian Science
Thank you for your ever civil response Salman-I was not refering to your post wrt hysteria.
1 Only the myopically patriotic would deny the systemic rot in Indian institutions including science.I just want to see some analysis rather than reiteration of the obvious. And again I do not think our anal...

Re: The State of Indian Science
As an example of wooly-headed thought take the example given above of Chinese publications being under-represented in the Weatern press. One merely has to propose that a Chinese worker in a given field is given a choice of publishing in an obscure Mandarin journal where even the most zealous cadre wi...

Sagar
Thank you for that reasoned and reasonable piece.I find the hysteria of scientific coolies in the west odious, most of them seem not to have got over their good fortune in securing a visa and take it as a recognition of their genius.Wake me up when you win the Nobel boys-till then you count...

Re: The State of Indian Science
Salman's statement seems to be a gross exageration. One would really need to determine the validity of the publishing aspects of science to make such sweeping comments. Most publishing has more to do with the dynamics of funding requirements than science of any significant description.
Secondly scie...
