Re: Celebrating 20 years of victory on the Saltoro Ridge
For the blunder of 1947, Indians have to go through this grueling Siachen episode. If only Nehru has allowed the military to re-claim the whole of J&K way back then, there would be a clear contiguous Indian territory reaching into Central Asia which today could be very valuable for a gas pipelin...

Re: Pakistan Nuclear Proliferation - 14 Jan 2003
Around the time of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, the Saudis became engaged in extensive religious missionary enterprise by setting up camps adjacent to the Allied tents. Daily they would push the envelop to meet and discuss Islam with the soldiers. These "Beards" were very well tra...

Re: Snipers of the Indian Army
The Gragunov SVD actually has an effecive range of about 600 to 800 meters with good accuracy to about 500meters. After 500 or so meters, it would take extreme aiming and experience to hit a target. One positive aspect of this weapon is that its design and manufacture is respectable. However it is n...

Re: Snipers of the Indian Army
What? Israeli snipers suck? Well brother, each time you have an enemy in your sight you have to worry about the political costs of squeezing the trigger and need to confirm with some higher up especially these days. It is more easier to lob a tank shell or two and claim colleteral damage. We had Ara...

Re: News, Reports and Analysis: LCA
I like the idea of private enterprises playing leading role in the future of this LCA. I also agree that given the state of the present situation wholesale involment of private sector is not totally possible. Perhaps HAL or DRDO or whomever is in charge allow private businesses to bid for the rights...

Re: LCA ground run & some other questions
Now that the LCA is going to take off sometime "quite" soon......here are my questions
1) by the time it rolls out, would it be a little outdated?
2) by the time it rolls out, would it be a little too small to carry the demands of combat...high performance rockets, radar etc?
3) How...

Re: Armour Technology Thread
Nandai,
FYI a few months after the Gulf War the Aviation Week magazine had an interesting article on the Maverick. According to that writer a Maverick need not penetrate nor explode on a M1A1 Abram to destroy it. Because of its weight and its method of delivery a mere fall on the Abrams would cri...

Re: Indo/US relations - what next ?
Bruce Reidel and Mat Daley are small fries in the administration and I suspect the reason they are in India is to molify/pacify the Indian govt or to engage in dialog just for the sake of it.
I wonder how much of clout they have within Clinton administration. Could it be to calm the anxieties of ...

Mr Johann,
To behonest I know of Israeli families who fled to Palestine from India during the war because the British were actually rounding up men of fighting age in India to be sent to the front.
Many Indians did also run away to Malaya and Singapore to avoid the "draft". So to say...

Re: Indian Army's myth: shattering record in WW-II
I have a confession to make. Actually I never knew about the Battle of Kohima until after the nuke tests last year. Pat Buchanan (yes that notorious Pat Buchanan) wrote a column in support of India and in that article he mentionned the Indian contributions in World war Two especially at Kohima.
I...

Re: Indian Army's myth: shattering record in WW-II
Well guys, Indians can certainly take credit for beating the Japanese in the battle of Kohima. This is the Imperial Army's first defeat in its entire history. Though the Imperial Army was bogged down in China, there was no decisive battle fought except for inconclusive hit and run all over China.<BR...
