Re: Armoured Vehicles Discussion Thread

How is width such a problem? Why is it not feasible to have rolling stock that is raised, so that the edges of the tank will clear any platform en route? What madrassa math extrapolation goes into the argument that width makes a tank significantly more vulnerable to air attack? If this is the case, ...

Re: Armoured Vehicles Discussion Thread

The picture of the Abram's carcass posted by Sankuji is one of a scuttled tank, or one tagged so in the albums that were linked by a subsequent poster. Beyond visual rhetoric and bad blood, such images do not contribute to a meaningful discussion. We have no idea of the original casualities from loo...

Re: C-17s for the IAF?

IMHO, the money involved is so big that one would argue that tactical solutions can be evolved to change a scenario requiring an airlift capability provided by a flight of C17s to one requiring a squdron of IL 76s. For instance, (again with Madrassa Math) a 30 ton payload capability would deliver 60...

Re: C-17s for the IAF?

This http://www.dot.state.fl.us/planning/pol ... rports.pdf indicates that a 10,000 ft commercial grade runway 100 ft wide, would cost around USD 22M. Madrassa Math seems to indicate that the cost of one C17 should cover about 2 dozen airfields that can take a fully loaded IL 78

Re: C-17s for the IAF?

Does someone have a rough idea, as to what it costs to upgrade an airstrip, to one which can handle a fully loaded IL 76. Is it conceivable that to simply upgrade about a dozen or more of our advanced airstrips to this capability, will cost us only a fraction of the price difference between an order...

Re: Indian Missile Technology Discussion

I have long wondered if WIGs are a good delivery platform for the Indian Navy. What if we had 2 squadrons worth of long range WIGs with payloads of 12-16 Nirbhays each. With overwatch from a flight of MKIs loaded for AoA, these can hit launching points close to the South China sea to deliver salvos ...

Re: Indian Missile Technology Discussion

Dropping out of my lurk mode to swing by an idea. Folks may be familiar with the NLOS/PAM system. The idea is pack 15, 60km range Vertical launched, Remotely Activated missiles, each having a warhead with just enough firepower to take out a tank or a bunker. See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index...

Re: INS Arihant (ATV) News and Discussion -2

One possibility is to re-introduce the idea of a submarine tender by letting Arihant and her sister subs into this role. If the second class of conventional subs have fuel cells in addition to battery + diesels, the idea becomes even more appealing. Arihant + 4 smaller conventional subs which can re...

Re: Indian Response to Terrorism

This is new to me...Thanks for the heads up. My take would be that the ToI show did not have an objective towards meaningful change. Change is expensive. Winning that show would mean zilch in the real world. What I'm proposing is a cheap way to give birth to a decent political alternative in the rea...

As a way around geeting air time, online streaming is an alternative. But there are a couple of key obstacles: 1. I do not personally know such esteemed individuals who can be on the panel. But here I guess, forumites can help to impress on people who can spend some time. I know we have people with ...

Re: Lessons Learned from Mumbai Terrorist Attacks

Some more suggestions: For the NSG: 1. Aside from 6-8 major centers where NSG units are deployed in country, we should 3-4 smaller detachments that are in constant tour. Their role is in mounting penetration exercises on vaious targets in country and rating the response of the local agencies. Target...

Re: Indian Response to Terrorism

Apologies in advance for this macabre posting... This is something I proposed the last time such an event occurred in Mumbai when multiple trains were bmbed and over 200 died. I had then called for a targeted bombing cum assasination campaign carried by a covert agency. Targets need to include those...

Re: Is it too early to end Jaguar Production line??

In addition to the anti air threat level in DPS and CAS situations, I think we need to highlight, the difference in how aerial platforms are employed in these two missions. For DPS, the target is relatively well defined. More often static, and depending on its value - likely to be defended in depth....

Re: Is it too early to end Jaguar Production line??

Chakunny what the hell does your post have to do with this thread? Agree..it is orthogonal, but not completely off topic. Why are we discussing keeping one specific line open? Is it because: 1. we have a number of exisiting frames and the ability to build more and/or 2. we would like to keep more o...

Re: Is it too early to end Jaguar Production line??

Looks like I did not get traction with my earlier post :) So let me try again. If we want to use our exisiting inventory - look at our fleet at An32s (scratch An26s). The USAF is now considering a Gunship lite based on the C27J, whose earlier version was similar in payload to the An26, to complement...

Re: Is it too early to end Jaguar Production line??

If you want CAS, my suggestion would be to go for what was suggested by Singha saar a long time ago. An-26G gunship which would act like a poor man's AC130 in a low threat environment and act as a real time airborne FAC in a high threat environment, with onboard operators guiding Nishants operating ...

Oh, but you discount the fact that we are not at war. My understanding is that when war is underway, tactical command of SF units are designated to theatre commanders as and when required. We need to develop a credible HRT team which can land in any part of India with air time + 1 hr. This is supposedly one of the many scenarios that the NSG is supposed to handle. Plus we need to have teams ready to perform on ships and planes. This requires a lot of training. If an Indian ship is ta...
