The BBC story has a lot of psy-ops. First of all Indian soldiers did not sing up to fight fascism. They were in the Army when the Viceroy declared war on Germany and the troops were sent to fight. I have read a number of books where the motivation for the many young indian officer volunteers (after...

indeed not, but even with extra long runways, the payload capacity will not be fantastic, and these a/c are not really pgm capable, so their real threat remains as air defense on the otherhand, if we go back to the PLA doctrine discussion from about 2 years ago(?) then front line units of the PLA wi...

seems to me that given the operational limitations, the PLAAF will primarily focus on air defense over tibet since the IAF enjoys a clear advantage in the air. PLA would have advantage of attacking in numbers from a secure and easier supply chain (which IAF will be trying to disrupt) compared to IA....

CRPF could play a very important rear areas security role, supporting the BSF who are further forward, who are watching the gaps between army deployed areas. the roles need to be quite different, and it will take a lot of C4I to make it effective and a huge training step up for the BSF and CRPF (and...

On Composite bows: I think Sandhu talks of Composite bows being around from Scythian times. I seem to have read that elsewhere too. The Huns apparently had them too, so by medieval times they should have been well known even in the hinterland of India (where invaders came less frequently) On Ancient...

If I am not mistaken, Rajput women would sometimes ride out with the final sally out of the gates with the men rather than commit jauhar. So it is not entirely out of the Indian context. There are many other examples of Indian women in historical combat - the famous Rani being the best example. i th...

Gurcharan Sandhu's books on Indian warfare in ancient and medieval times touches on these battles. It says that Chauhan had Mahmud on the run and could have wiped him out in his camp - except that Rajput ethics prevented him from doing so. A few days later the same Mahmud fought Chauhan again in ope...
