The hornet is not going to make it. Two reasons why - one - it failed critical hot and high tests, 2 - it doesn't bring much to the table compared to other contenders. The EF could very well be the dark horse in this race. It was after all L2 and brings to the table Germany, England and a couple of ...

Re: Indian Military Aviation- September 29 2013

Responding to some thoughts on the LCA dhaaga. Do we still need that theoretical 42 squadron number or can we do more with less. Compared to a/c of yesteryear which typically had specialised roles like a switchblade we now have Swiss knife like capabilities. Almost all current and future gen a/c are...

FMS route for Gripen? Possible?

It is about shoring up capabilities in a short time frame. The Tejasii( mk2) will also maybe need external consultant support from SAAB ( and maybe the AMCA). They are almost sanction proof IMHO.

Re: Indian Military Aviation- September 29 2013

IMHO I think we are following a good strategy and not putting all the eggs in one basket. The way I look at it there is no way in the world that we can ramp up production of Tejas to about 24 AC per year in a short time frame. And that is mk1. After mk2 comes online the ramp up will take longer - 20...

Hitesh, the Scorpenes are a French design. We have ToT clause, most designs are not shared in entirety. Making a scorpene Mk2 wont be easy. Also, the french will want us to pay for any changes made, which increases the price. Making changes to submarines is not easy - to add a plug in MESMA for exam...

Shiv Gaaru, in your scenario - the three damaged fighters returning with possible 3 enemy fighters tailing. The returning fighters will most probably not be flying 'in formation' - this could be a give away. Also for the enemy, it will be easier and preferable to 'shoot down' rather than 'track and ...

JT - the problem with HAL is at the supply chain level. It still operates at sarkari pace, where stuff is ordered only when needed. What is the speed of Astra? Lot of sites say Mach 1.2-1.4 which sounds like BS. BR says Mach 4+? http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/MISSILES/aam/astra-aam.html We wouldn't even work on making it as an AA missile if it was slower than most aircraft which can fly supersonic. A speed of 1.4M, in a tail cha...

The Xenon will make a good contender. Has a nice high torque engine, good off-road capability ( seen a non souped up xenon at an off-road competition and it was crazy), good payload capability, large load bay. A question - What advantage does a longbow equipped Apache have in the deserts of Rajasthan (considering this will be the major tank battlefield) as compared to an LCH using a UAV (Sky Eagle/Netra/Nishant) providing over the horizon ability with HeliNa providing the LOAL capability.

E.g. Pechora Squadrons being re-equipped with the Akash Mk1.

Need to do some research but just a thought.
