Re: LCA Tejas: News and Discussions

Very interesting interview with Parrikar in HT this morning. 1. "We will probably need more Rafales." 2. The MiG-21s need to be replaced, we will either need mass production of the LCA or we might combine some other requirements and get a medium sized fighter. " Plus plenty of other t...

Re: LCA Tejas: News and Discussions

@indranilroy Noob-ish question: would an 'active' solution have worked/been possible? I'm thinking of an extendable-retractable LREX type thing (a miniature swing wing, if you will) that can provide the wing shape needed at the apex to suit different needs?

Re: LCA Tejas: News and Discussions

The thing is that all Air forces are going away from simple dedicated one role aircraft towards multi-role aircraft (tilted towards ground or air.) The economics of the purchase drive very strongly towards that. Logistics too. Almost 2/3rds of the cost of the aircraft is lifecycle cost, instead of ...

Re: LCA Tejas: News and Discussions

Bizarrely, the LCA and MMRCA problems seem to have exactly the same things wrong with them - it's as if we've learnt nothing. There are simply too many "needs/wants" heaped onto one airframe. Re the LCA, 1) The Air Force NEEDED a force-filler, quickly - means immediate/quick availability, ...

Re: LCA Tejas: News and Discussions

I have little knowledge of aerodynamics but this article by Prof. Produt Das seems superficial and flies in the face of many observations that have nothing to do with aerodynamics. What Prof. Das would like to see is a simple LCA bomb truck. Something like what the IAF wanted a long time ago. A pos...

Re: Design your own fighter

Thanks again, brar_w. I guess my main concern was armour, which I believe makes the A-10 highly survivable. However, as you and negi said, better to have something that can fight its way to the battlefield in the first place. I'd still maybe look at an up-armoured LCA in that case (a la the Mirage 2...

Re: Design your own fighter

Supposing I'm looking for a dedicated ground-attack/low-level strike/forward air-control aircraft, and I don't want to buy an A-10/Frogfoot, largely because I want to have as much commonality with existing equipment as possible, which approach would be better: 1) A modified fighter (the LCA as an ex...

Re: Newbie Corner & Military Miscellaneous

Re: AEW&C News & Discussion

pretty out of the box idea vardhank ... worthy of a james bond but the real achilles heel of the concept are twofold 1) Service ceiling: 7,195 m (23,606 ft). this more than the 12,000 ft of the KA31/Merlin AEW types. BUT ideally you need them at 35000-45000ft for much longer radar horizon. a Triton...

the ancestor of the US2 was deployed in service for ASW patrols. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shin_Meiwa_US-1A since it can land in reasonable seas , I think arranging to refuel it, load new sonobuoys and change the crew should be possible from a small supply ship like a submarine tender. but chang...

@rohitvats Since you pointed out on the Rafale-MMRCA thread that we're wrangling over the merits/flaws in the Rafale deal without looking at the simple need for numbers in the IAF, so I'm putting my questions to you in this thread, purely in terms of acquisition, rather than in terms of which aircra...

Noob POV (please move to the Newbie thread if you think it belongs there). Get more MKIs, possibly even built in Russia, and tak...

I'd spoke at one point on the LCA thread about selling LCAs at a cut-rate price, as a start to make sure our allies have the right equipment. vardhank, almost all fighters designed in 80's and later can be considered STOL. if Mk2 has levcons LCA would do even better. coming to stall speed, there was a very interesting picture from 1989 air power demo at tilpat range. it featured 2 mirage 2000's flying with a quite slow flying prop driven...

@Rahul M Low-speed ability... I'm probably not using the proper term here. ^^^ I don't think it should be seen as such. In a way, the USA is learning to accept the fact that India cannot be seen as an ally in the Cold War sense, i.e. a vassal.
