I think going ahead with TEDBF is a much better option... - I don't think it will be an obsolete design by 2030... All major Navies will be operating 4th Gen aircrafts (or a combo of 4th & 5th Gen) for many years to come... Except for F35 B/C, no other 5th Gen jet is in operation or is even bein...

MRCBF is being planned for IAC-2 only... I don't think IAC-2 will be commissioned earlier than 2035... Also, 5-10 years after this, Vikramaditya will be up for retirement and we might be looking at IAC-3... So for both IAC-2 and IAC-3, we would need around 120 jets... I guess India will (and should) start a new program for a 5++ or 6th Gen fighter may be after 2025 (when Tejas Mk2 will finally enter production and design team will be free)... They would probably include all the 6th Gen stuff like Swarm drones, Unmanned wingman etc... I think India already started...

Does this include the 2 upgraded squadrons of Mig 27's or is the last of the non upgraded squadrons being retired? IAF retired last MIG 27 ML in December 2017... After that only 2 squadrons of MIG 27 UPG are in operation based in Jodhpur... Not sure IAF operates any other version... All googling I ...

Philip ji... I guess they'll setup additional line for Tejas by the time IAF orders Tejas SPORT... I read somewhere that IAF will order around 40 jets (2 squadrons) of SPORT version... I guess when the policy document was developed for formation of 42 squadrons, they would have definitely given the breakup of no. of Light Weight, Light-Medium, Medium-Heavy and Heavy fighter jets, and also their roles... Ofcourse, that document is classified and no one outside really knows the spec...
