Re: Why has it become so cool to hate India
No, my Commandant was not wrong. If that was the rule, then I was wrong. Discipline I reckon comes first, stupid that it may be. Thats why we win wars! Remember tht guy who would not climb Tololing because he might get killed? Valid point, but not so when you are in the Army. MF Hussein walked into ...

Shiv, Talking of army dress codes that you mentioned. I had gone to a Cultural Soireee in my dhoti and kurta [the type you see in these Bengali zaminder movies]. I decided to drop in at the Commandant’s house, which was nearby since I had not ‘called on’ the lady. I clean forgot that I was in a dhot...

Shiv, Its a great pleasure to read your posts. It could be that I am as young as you are and so it appeals. Premen and Auddy are both common names and surnames in Bengal. There was an Admiral called Auddy from the Submarine arm. He was in my car pool in Delhi. I heard an interesting one in 'Walk the Talk' programme of NDTV 24X7 on 10 May 03.
Arun Sourie stated that Jairam Ramesh wrote an article 'YANKEE GO HOME' and the punch line was - but take us along with you!

Re: Why has it become so cool to hate India
Its a great article by Arindam. Its easy and cool to criticise India since greenbacks are cool. Ask Tariq Aziz! Traitors may come and traitors may go, but none can subdue India! Further there is an Urdu couplet which goes that the sun can be pushed down in the West, but it will reappear again in the...

Re: Role of armed helicopters in army operations
I tend to agree that the tactics used was wrong. Conceptwise, the Apache and its role should not be faulted without greater details being made available.
I think I read on the BRF on some link or the other that of the 33 Apaches launched for the ops, 30 were hit and one was brought down!

I would like to give a point of caution when the Gulf War is being taken as the datum line. Everything of the US appparently was clockwork. It may not be just that it was superiror. In war, Command and Control is MOST important. Iraq was denied the same because of excellent US ECCM, ECM meansure whe...

Re: Role of armed helicopters in army operations
Without going into characteristics of all types of attack helicopters [AHs] and the enemy’s Air Defence {AD} environment, it is suffice to say that attack helicopters can be useful. Conceptwise, AHs would fly in the following terrain flying modes i.e. low level, contour [flying just over the contour...
