If 100 % serviceability can be maintained than 40 mig 29k are enough for both carriers as both have standard complement of 20 mig 29k each and both will be available for only 3.5 years of the 10 years till TEDBF is available.

The 111 nos NUH started at 56 nos with 28 options before it went upto 111nos . The mig 29 with the IAF had a crash rate of 0.8 per 10000hr. The mig 29 k have airframe life of 4000 hr. If used for 150 hr /year per aircraft one crash every two years can be expected.
The course of action is each crash is investigated and corrective action taken.

F404/414 have long service life and we will be having 20% spare engine. A short period ban will have no effect. No need to worry. The planners would have already factored in the scenario.

The advantage of US fighters is that in case of war with China and heavy attrition of IAF fighters take place then in service US fighters can be transferred to India which IAF pilots are trained to operate.

Nearly all 78 nos to IA and 16 nos to IAF have been produced. Few number may be left to be produced. Many are reported to be still at HAL waiting delivery.
