There is nothing in this report that has not been made public earlier. Perhaps the only heartening item is that this report was chaired at the highest level (Gen. Vij) and has been widely disseminated among the higher-ups. I would not state that SF are being misused. They are better equipped now to ...

Just came across a gem of a book. Possibly the best historical war fiction I've read on the Indian army. Its "Legion of the Brave" by DP Ramachndran ('DPR'). DPR is an ex-cavalry officer who saw action in the '71 war on the Eastern Front. He mentions in the book that he always wanted to wr...

Not sure if Afghanistan is the best model to follow for India's Cold Start Strategy. Deploying special forces teams may be applicable to only the LoC and POK. The terrain is suitable for small teams - less population and plenty of hills and valleys to hide. Access roads are few and a small team of c...

A few days ago, my father was admitted to Apollo Hosp, Madras for a heart bypass. We admitted him there on the knowledge that it is one of the best hospitals in India. Any historical instances of armies dominating the front (or achieving vistory) simply because they got there earlier than the other side? I can think of only the Germans in WWI ("Shieffen Plan (sp?)") who reached the gates of Paris. [Added later] - One more is the Egyptians in the '73 Arab...

The other bk I would recommend is Gaurav Sawant's "Dateline Kargil". It is a journalistic account and should not be read for historical accuracy. However, it is highly readable and gives great detail - at unit level - on how the IA lives and fights. Harinder Baweja and Shrinjoy Choudhury's...

Re: Indian Army - Revolution in Military Affairs

Correct me if I'm wrong but RMA (for infantry) can be boiled down to the following: (1) the ability to fight at night (2) ability to see the enemy before he sees you (3) ability to bring own firepower down on the enemy with exactness and (4) ability to communicate or 'know' the position of own force...
