Not sure what is the hold up. Based on the recent purchase plans with extra Rafales waiting in the wings, money doesn't seem to be a problem. Neither is tech. HAL would take couple of Su30 and prototype the upgrade with a version of Uttam.

Only IAF knows why we haven't even started with a prototype.

10 km what Manpad has that kinda of range even Verpa has range of only around of only 6.5 km. Even that is highly dubious as it is against head on slow moving non maneuvering target. Pak seems to have come with infiltrate without CFV. Send across the cannon fodders & "volunteer". Will keep IA busy chasing them. If they get lucky, they will get through.

If India complains, can easily deny and say we don't do any CFV, so we don't know what you are talking about.

Ofcourse, which is why it makes sense to start asap. No harm in having a prototype with F404 and carry out a risk reduction project.

Given the politics around manned fighter purchases, it is better off investing in to future un-manned variants.

It makes sense that Astra 2 will not be made longer. We forget that Astra 2 will be the primary BVR (along with SFDR) for AMCA. So the length needs to be within the limits of AMCA's weapon bay.

Logically, increased range will achieved by using a larger diameter.

The key to fighting Chini 5G fighters is to target their's AWACS. Without an AWACS support, the 5G fighters have to switch on their radar, allowing detection of their location. If they use J10/11/16/Su35 radar, then you target these. Without knocking off IAF, no amount of 5G fighter is going to help...

Wouldn't larger fins create extra lift, there by helping with the range? I would presume larger fins would be quite useful during the coasting phase. I have little knowledge of aero structures, but logic tells smaller fins would be useful during the powered phase(due to reduced drag) and larger fins...
