Not sure what is the hold up. Based on the recent purchase plans with extra Rafales waiting in the wings, money doesn't seem to be a problem. Neither is tech. HAL would take couple of Su30 and prototype the upgrade with a version of Uttam.
Only IAF knows why we haven't even started with a prototype.

Looks like the Chinis haven't released Pl15 to the Pak 10th gen fighter yet. I did guess the Chinis won't trust the beggaristan with their primary BVR weapon. The offer from India to quad is simple. We will keep half of PLA occupied on the frozen heights of Tibet, in return from industrial investment. Military just the combination of US+India+Japan is a massive naval, land & air power. Once we cross 5T, it will probably be the richest block as well. Land: around 3 million active troops. Sea: 250+150+150= 550 ships+ nuke boats+ carriers Air: 2500+600+500= 3600 aircraft! It is a simple fact tha...

There is a simple question to be asked. What are we lacking against the Chinis. Answer: Money. We don't lack in missile, land or aircraft tech or even fighting men. The gaps like jet engines can be filled up, if we throw enough money at it. The quad is not required for the tech or boots on LAC or to...

Given the politics around manned fighter purchases, it is better off investing in to future un-manned variants.

It makes sense that Astra 2 will not be made longer. We forget that Astra 2 will be the primary BVR (along with SFDR) for AMCA. So the length needs to be within the limits of AMCA's weapon bay.
Logically, increased range will achieved by using a larger diameter.
