Re: Managing Chinese Threat (09-08-2014)

Srikumar, Now we should use whatever they have built in the tri-junction area to get down to the valley below if a firing skirmish happens. To some extent it might make our job easier too. One never knows, maybe that is why India observed silently, but took action only when they started to camp perm...

Re: Managing Chinese Threat (09-08-2014)

If you check google maps, there are other areas too where the Chinese have built roads after crossing the valley below at the border areas and edged up to the ridge line. The fact that there are no roads from the ridge tops to the valleys on the Bhutan side is a dead giveaway. If you look at the gen...

Re: Managing Chinese Threat (09-08-2014)

That was a great find, Iyersan. Almost reveals what India needs to do. :-) So a border re-alignment as I said is in the offing, this is what India has been saying regarding the tri-junction settlement, but couched in diplomatic language. We have not seen the end of this crisis as India needs to enci...

Re: Managing Chinese Threat (09-08-2014)

One way to manage the border in the Sikkim area around the tri-junction is for India to ask Bhutan for a border re-alignment with India so as to be able to encircle the Chinese all the way up to the disputed region by them with Bhutan...almost close to Yadong/Yathung in the valley. This way Bhutan w...

Re: Managing Chinese Threat (09-08-2014)

When one looks on google earth 3d view, the tri-junction area in the south looks like a real plateau. The disputed area on the China-Bhutan side of the border to the north has valleys and peaks, but it seems to be referred to as the Dokalam plateau. Maybe this is what is causing the confusion ?

The only way they can reach the tri-junction area is via road that passed through Bhutanese territory on the Dokla plateau/pass. Re: Managing Chinese Threat (09-08-2014)

Maybe, it is time to really grab some Chinese territory as they claim we are doing. Just constrict the entrance in the north to Chumbi Valley in slow burn mode. Put real pressure there. We do have access north of the snow peaks and glaciers in Sikkim to get around to those parts and it is relatively...

To manage the Chinese threat as this thread title says, may take more than just integrity of the border status quo, it will take some pro-active effort from the Indian side to alter things to its advantage in the long run. Why does it have to strictly keep the ORR alignment ? If there are no ingress and egress areas possible for stations close to ground level, then such an alignment will not work. Going underground for 30-40km will not be economical too.
