Re: Indian Navy News & Discussion - 15 Dec 2016

The stealthy future design seems to be influenced by the US Navy's Zumwalt class DDG when a 'land attack' platform was in vogue. The Zumwalt concept is hugely expensive and the USN is trying to figure out how best to use it. The ships are not even in service I think. Zumwalt was in dry dock getting ...

Regarding stern launching of small boats from ships, there is hope! The Bharati built CG interceptors have a stern ramp. Maybe the IN can learn something from the CG? https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DbrY0bwU0AANDDa.jpg and https://www.newskarnataka.com/storage/uploads/moreimages/Launching%20ICG%20Vessel...

Re: Indian Navy News & Discussion - 15 Dec 2016

The good news is that IN force levels of commissioned ships dipped to 131-132 or so and have now climbed back up to about 133 with the delivery of LCU L-54. But force levels will stay at about the high 130ish/ low 140-ish ship mark for many more years because of all the decommissionings that are due...

TSarkar, thank you for your insights. Yes, stern ramps for ships' boats is the way t...

Re: Indian Navy News & Discussion - 15 Dec 2016

The P17A is already running late. As of now, it looks like 3 or more years for the last hulls. But those involved will maintain that everything is on time until they miss the initial milestones. No surprise there. My hope is that after the initial start up delays, both yards can adjust the build sch...

The P17A model and the image in the GRSE future projects poster clearly shows that the RCS of the actual design appears lower than the earlier renderings. One industry source thinks it has to do with operational feedback from from the IN regarding the enclosed boat hangars on the P17 Shivalika. The ...

Re: Indian Navy News & Discussion - 15 Dec 2016

I hope the IN doubles the ongoing 7 ship P17A order to 14-16 ships. At one stroke, this will solve the numbers problem with major surface combatants and leverage economies of scale. At the same time, an emphasis on acquiring many more SSK and AIP submarines will pose a serious sea denial capability....

One can also argue that new tech from TKMS will certainly be beneficial. Still, there should be concerted effort to actually absorb tech instead of merely assembling platforms and sourcing "indigenous" items of dubious provenance. Think sticker transfer technology here.

Re: Indian Naval News & Discussion - 22 April 2015

The IN is engaging in wishful thinking when it talks of a 212 ship navy by 2027. Maybe 2047 is a more likely date for getting those numbers given the large numbers of ships that will have to be decommissioned by 2027. At best, it might get to 150-160 ships by 2027. Maybe the IN top brass should get ...

Raghava, the fuel delivery system was modified on the P-21 (and I presume the missiles' cruise profile too). The converted missile mimics a supersonic (>Mach 1) sea skimmer.
