Probably just like Paki politicians Rajapaksa family and the MPs and their families are dual citizens of western countries and that's where they will flee. The problem for Srilanka is that the world seems to be inching towards a slowdown and recession after 12 yrs of living on a quantitative easing stimulus and low interest rates environment, so i don't think the situation will improve much for a while.

I don't know why folks keep floating this plate of khayali pulao that India should ask lanka to join the union. a. Sri lankans will never, ever agree to such a proposal and b. We have enough problems as is fighting insurgencies without getting into another one. What India can do is wipe out the paki influence in Srilanka , reduce the chinese influence and sign long term lease with the Srilankan govt for some strategic ports.

since ancient times, the lankans have always survived under the shadow of larger powers

they have thus developed into an extractive culture, shaped by their need to survive at all costs. When you are powerless, then cunningness and deception become favored weapons. It is in their scorpion like nature.

but then these minnows went up against a long circling shark like the cheenis who they thought were friendly and always smiling at them.

Hook, line and sinker before the lankans knew what had actually hit them

even if you do all that you have outlined above, they will still play off India against the pakis and the cheeni because they are leeches, parasites, and freeloaders, always on the lookout for the perfect host.

anyone looking or pushing for a union is delusional, the lankan parasites only need a host.

they never saw this coming, the BJP and Modi have undercut their main electoral plank

The images coming out of Srilanka is not pretty. I am amazed that so far there's only been 5 deaths. People are chasing MPs, Mayors, top police officials, political workers on the streets, beating them black and blue and stripping them naked. There is a complete command and control failure in Srilanka. Where is the defense minister ? The senior military officials ? Why is there no shoot at sight order with troops patrolling the roads already ? We need to double the security at our embassy and have a evacuation plan ready.

shoot at sight orders have been out for sometime now for people burning and damaging property

Putting troops out on the roads will provoke the agitators even further.

one suspects that there is a regime change operation in progress.

Who is doing this is something that may become clearer as the days go by

In the meanwhile, all the signs are there that this may well be an abrahanics led operation and the cheeni are really lying low, wary of the "debt trap" blowback against them

The cheeni do not want a change because they will have to break in the new guy, bribe him, and re-train him all over again, and India couldn't really care less, beyond broad parameters that he be anti cheeni and India pasand.

the guys really interested are the abrahanics because they need an anti India base very close up and under their control so they may work out a deal with the cheenis

Its not like Rajapaksas were pro-India, so i don't think its the abrahamics. Besides, although Srilanka has a sizeable minority, unlike India they are not powerful enough to take on project of this scale. That said when a country falls into anarchy, law and order collapses and there are no leaders then there will always be opportunists both internal and external, hence my comment on India increasing security for our embassy and consulates.

For now it looks like Rajapaksas and his cabinet are stuck in Srilanka in military bases. The only international airport has been surrounded by people, so the other option could be for them to make it to a airforce base and get to safer destination. The lankan rupee surprisingly has remained flat, maybe some market manipulation at play.

Sri Lanka’s Demigods to Destroyers, Rajapaksas' Ignominious Exit Busts Myths Around the Powerful Family
Rajapaksas, once revered for ending the civil war, are being called traitors by the people of Sri Lanka for putting the country in a spot. To stay in power, Rajapaksas dismissed all charges against them that forced people to protest against them
D P SATISH, MAY 10, 2022

The year 2009 was the highest point in both personal and political lives of Mahinda Rajapaksa. As the first-time President of Sri Lanka, Rajapaksa had destroyed world’s most powerful and ruthless terrorist organisation Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), ending a 30-year-long bloody civil war. That unbelievable victory had elevated his stature both at home and abroad. The entire Rajapaksa clan was basking in the glory. They had no rivals to unseat them. Euphoric and ecstatic supporters started to describe him as the reincarnation of the legendary king Dutugemunu.
Even his controversial astrologer Sumanadasa Abeyagunavardane had famously said “Twenty-five years ago, I said there would be a hero-king from Ruhuna. Now he’s the one we believe, President Mahinda Rajapaksa”.
According to GroundViews website, the total transformation took place like this: Democracies have citizens. Kings need subjects. Absolutist monarchs need absolutely servile subjects. Mahinda Rajapaksa is hailed as the ‘Lion in the Lion Flag’, ‘Father of the Nation’, ‘Wonder of the World and the Universe’, ‘Golden Sword which defends the nation’, ‘Golden Thread which unites sundered hearts’, ‘Leader who conquered the World’ and ‘The Sun and the Moon to a country which defeated Terror’. He has been proclaimed by the Sangha as the ‘Universally Renowned Lord of the Three Sinhala Lands’.
“Words can be like tiny doses of arsenic,” cautioned Victor Klemperer[viii]. The unceasing outpouring of servility which is Rajapaksa propaganda aims at transforming critical and irreverent citizens into mindlessly obedient ‘good subjects’.
Days after the Presidential election of 2010, the victorious Rajapaksas attended a state sponsored musical show, ‘Jaya Jayawe’. The final panegyric of that evening was dedicated to the President’s mother. As the songstress crooned, “Mother, are you watching from heaven, as the Son, whom the gods and the Brahmas sent to your womb from golden palaces, is protecting the Nation?” state TV showed the said ‘heaven-sent son’, President Mahinda Rajapaksa listening with manifest complaisance. His matter-of-fact demeanour indicated that he considered such idolatrous outpouring to be his due. It was the attitude of a man who sincerely believes that absolute power and lifelong rule are his right and will do anything to prevent anyone from interfering with this destiny – be it ordinary citizens, the war-winning army commander or the chief justice.
Riding high on huge popularity, Mahinda advanced the Presidential elections and won handsomely by defeating his Army chief Sarath Fonseka. Once the peace returned to the island nation, global businessmen landed there looking for big investment opportunities. China, with its bottomless pockets and an aim to establish a base in the Indian Ocean closer to India, started courting the Rajapaksa family, promising an overall development of the nation.

Sri Lanka's Ex-PM Mahinda Rajapaksa Will Not Flee Country After Deadly Clashes, Says Son Namal
Mahinda had to be evacuated by the military from his official residence on Monday night after it was besieged by an angry crowd
AFP, COLOMBO, MAY 10, 2022

Sri Lanka’s Mahinda Rajapaksa — who resigned as prime minister after his supporters attacked anti-government protesters and sparked a day of violence — will not flee the country, his son told AFP on Tuesday.
The 76-year-old heads a political clan whose hold on power has been shaken by months of blackouts and shortages in the island nation, which is suffering its worst economic crisis since independence in 1948.
Mahinda had to be evacuated by the military from his official residence on Monday night after it was besieged by an angry crowd.
But his son Namal, himself once touted as a future national leader, said the Rajapaksa family had no plans to leave Sri Lanka despite weeks of protests demanding they relinquish power.

There is a school of thought of SL becoming part of the union, which I agree with, is the long civilization connection with the island/people.

An immediate union will be troublesome. India could work out something along the lines of the European Union - common currency, easier travel, trade, education, etc, and have a loose federation of some sort. Experts could arrive at a roadmap. The island country cannot be left alone as long as China is strong and scouting for creating trouble.

This is the time for India to enter SL and annex it to establish stability, preserve democracy and freedom of its people to prevent and preempt the Sri Lankans getting subjugated by a totalitarian communist regime that corrupted and controlled it's now deposed leaders, and India must feel compelled to act before SL could be used by this totalitarian communist state to directly threaten and endanger the world's largest democracy and global rules based order.

the dravidian movement whose sources of funding, the primary drivers, and the ideologues have always been / continue to be the abrahamics via the BIF

the ltte pushed for separatism as well as supremacy. There is unfinished work that has to be completed, as per the backers of the ltte. This time the leadership has been made decentralized, organic to the region and they now seek political power prior to making another bid. That is what is happening in front of our very eyes in TN and AP. They have secured, closed off and sanitized the coastal areas to try and eliminate the eyes and ears factor.

It is only the same BIF abrahamics who stand to gain. They have always been able to work out deals with the subversives, be it the global communists or the cheeni in this case or even hitler for that matter

they are the ones who slyly but viscously enmeshed the lankans in a maze of "human rights" abuse charges, and gradually bled them out by eating into their trade, foreign relations and geopolitical relevance.

No one other than India even came to help in any meaningful manner.

The BIF fronted by the tamils in the guise of the ltte, has already fought a war for eelam and had a temporary setback. The final chapter has not yet been written.

The eelam war never saw India as a friendly figure and nor will they ever see us as a friend

When the tamils fought the sinhala the first time. did anyone think that the tamil minority was too weak to start a war so they are not a threat. That fight lasted almost 30 odd years because they all underestimated the tamils and utterly failed to see the BIF in the background

In fact, the trojan BIF had a ringside seat at the high table all through the war in the guise of "negotiators" and "peace keepers" These very same b@$t@rd$ desperately wanted to enter assam and the NE as "negotiators" and "peace keepers"

we always miss the forest for the trees, especially when we see gora skin

why would denmark be doing this when even the dravidians in TN did not do so.

28 feb 2022

A handball tournament was held in Vejle, Denmark over the weekend in memory of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE)'s chief negotiator and political strategist, Anton Balasingham.

no one in SL will touch Indian assets because we are the sugar daddies and the flavor of the month

even otherwise, the SLs know better than to piss off India with it's multitude of trade opportunities, medical and student visas and the chance to enter and disappear like the beedis.

India denies sending troops to Lanka
In a tweet, the Indian High Commission in Colombo said it ”would like to categorically deny speculative reports in sections of media and social media about India sending her troops to Sri Lanka. These reports and such views are also not in keeping with the position of the Government of India.”
Statesman News Service | New Delhi | May 11, 2022

Amid worsening economic and political crises in Sri Lanka, India today rejected reports that it was sending its troops to the island nation.
In a tweet, the Indian High Commission in Colombo said it ”would like to categorically deny speculative reports in sections of media and social media about India sending her troops to Sri Lanka. These reports and such views are also not in keeping with the position of the Government of India.”
The Indian mission also drew attention to the statement made by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) yesterday on the developments in Sri Lanka. ”The Spokesperson of (the) Ministry of External Affairs of India clearly stated yesterday that India is fully supportive of Sri Lanka’s democracy, stability and economic recovery,” it said in another tweet.

US ambassador to SL visits the lankan finance minister, looks like uncle sam will write a check to buy back some influence lost to the chinese. Once the smoke clears and some stability is found i expect the Rajapaksas to blame their favorite punching bag, India, for all of lankan misfortune.

seems pro India and is already seeking better ties with India

SL public opinion is currently pro Indian but in SL politics, that is a momentary phenomenon as has been proven time and again

I will bet big bucks that Wickransinghe has already bought a whole lot of new fire extinguishers for his house

cheen will never be out of SL. The rest of their OBOR victims are waiting to see how things pan out and if SL escapes the cheeni death grip, the US will encourage the other OBOR victims to default but will not provide much in the way of help.

In SL, cheen has the strangle hold of a hungry python coiled tight around it's victim

All these OBOR victim countries are basically freeloaders who hoped that the cheeni, in their alleged strategic generosity that was supposedly tied to their geopolitical ambitions, would benefit them without consequences.

All these greedy OBOR victims forgot the very first principle of international relations: There is no free lunch

the OBOR victims are to provide cheap labor options for the cheeni workers, yield material resources on the cheap, grow food and agricultural produce exclusively for the cheeni mainland, even at the cost of their own populations, accommodate overseas military bases without the cheeni shelling out billion$ in lease payments.

They all missed the fact that the cheeni are using the tried, tested and effective methodology of the east India company, following a slightly modified and updated game plan that was so effectively used by the colonial powers.

the head honchos in all the OBOR victim countries and their families were bribed beyond their wildest expectations to accommodate the cheeni, politically, legally and in many cases amended their laws to indemnify the cheen for all acts of omission and commission.

This is exactly how pfizer and moderna acted when they "sold" their pathetic "vaccines" and the ameriki + EU deep states aided such huge companies

IMHO by definition freeloaders cannot be victims. These guys knew what they were getting into. They just hoped (and continue to hope) the they can play one big guy against the other to pay for them. One thing which they didn't (and couldn't) foresee was the global economy taking a hit due to Covid.

Manish ji,

I call them freeloaders and victims because their own countries were kept in the dark. Take rajapaksa for example, he is a freeloader at the cost of his country. when the cheeni took 99 years possession of hambantota port, the sinhala public was shocked. They were not aware of the deal as indeed many local politicians and cabinet ministers were also kept in the dark. Mark my words, this rajapaksa guy will come to a gory end, if the past dynamics of SL politics is any indication of future behaviour.

the mafia famiglia has signed some MOU with the cheenis, is anyone aware of the contents..., and in which democratic country does a political party president sign a MOU with an enemy country

Covid and ukraine are both black swans. The shortage and price hikes for food grain, oil (both crude and edible), fertilizer and the consequences of these two black swan events impacting a large number of economies in the short to medium term is very real and this may cause a severe recession in several economies with the vast possibilities of several countries in europe going the sri lanka way, specially the smaller and more marginalized ones now sitting, largely ignored, on the peripheries of the EU's white supremacist edifice

In meeting after meeting, the cheeni begged and pleaded with India to join the CPEC and they also got the pakis to add their two cents worth, including a bizarre offer by the pakis, no doubt prompted by the cheenis, to remove paki from CPEC and replace it with India.

Much of the initial happenings with regard to India and the CPEC and how the cheenis and the pakis tried to enmesh Modi seems to have been wiped from the net.

Had India been led by the usual cancerous cabal of the congi, commie, and BIF funded gaddars, India would have jumped in with both feet. In fact, anyone except Modi would have rushed into the CPEC without hesitation. The kind of loose change that the cheenis are capable of throwing around made the congi, commie high priests swoon with anticipation and expectation. Many congis and commies did become vocal when Modi refused to join.

except now, no one dares to talk of the cheeni perfidy, as is evident in the utter failure of their management by debt trap methodology.

The countries in europe, the britshits and the amerikis led by biden are fearful of upsetting the cheenis and incurring their economic wrath

Say what you want about trump, but when he was around, things were much better. Except of course, for the ruffled egos and and the rudely ignored commie ecosystem which made a big deal in the sold out media and presstitute press.

the cheenis bribed away hesitations and opposition in the OBOR victim countries, they signed secret agreements and all disputes were to be settled only in cheeni courts without option of arbitration or recourse to compromise. The agreements were kept secret in all countries, even from the local governments, except in pukestan where the pakis disclosed in detail many of the cheeni agreements to the IMF and world bank. This let the proverbial cat out of the bag and also greatly upset the cheenis. The pakis did this purposely hoping to score brownie points to ease their own loan applications.

the heaven born cheenis have their own multiple black swans inside their middle kingdom. Their economy has tanked, internal unrest is spreading due to falling unemployment, they haven't been able to manage the covid with their yak piss sinovac "vaccines", and to add to their woes, their growth has significantly slowed, exports have fallen and xi is firmly in the crosshairs of his political opponents.

Modi has turned out to be a personal black swan for xi and his PLA.

Sri Lanka Economic Crisis Higlights: PM Wickremesinghe says nation down to last day of petrol, proposes privatising national airline
The newly-elected Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said Monday that the crisis-stricken nation was down to its last day of petrol as the power minister asked citizens not to join the lengthy queues at fuel stations that have galvanised weeks of anti-government protests. He also proposed privatising the loss-making national airline as part of reforms aimed at dealing with the country worst economic crisis in decades.

In a message to the people, Wickremesinghe said that he plans to propose a special relief budget that will replace the development-oriented budget earlier approved for this year. This, he said, would channel funds previously allocated for infrastructure development to public welfare.

He also said that the 21st Amendment to the Constitution would be discussed on Monday as he got backing from former President Maithripala Sirisena-led SLFP in the formation of the government to tackle the nation’s worst economic crisis. The 21st Amendment to the Constitution will be produced to net for approval, he said.

Meanwhile, India delivered the 12th shipment of diesel containing over 400,000 Metric Tonnes (MT) of fuel to the island nation which is facing its worst economic crisis.

China will help us weather financial crisis, says Sri Lanka’s prime minister
Ranil Wickremesinghe says Beijing offers ‘a few hundred million dollars’ as Colombo seeks IMF bailout

China has offered “a few hundred million dollars” in lending to Sri Lanka to help alleviate a shortage of essential goods in the crisis-hit country, according to the island’s prime minister.

Ranil Wickremesinghe, who was appointed Sri Lanka’s prime minister this month, said he hoped to finalise the Chinese loan as his government seeks emergency aid to keep its economy going as it negotiates an IMF bailout. He added that talks with Beijing over additional lending were at an early stage.

“It’s quite substantial. It would be a few hundred million dollars,” he told the Financial Times in an interview. “It’ll still help us get hold of essential consumer items, fertilisers . . . the ministry of finance is having discussions on some of the items.”

Sri Lanka last week became the first country in Asia to default on its foreign debt in more than two decades after running out of foreign reserves, leading to widespread shortages of essentials including fuel, medicine and food.

The island owes more than $50bn in overseas debt, the largest share to private bondholders, followed by multilateral lenders and countries including Japan, China and India.

Sri Lanka’s ties with Beijing, particularly its participation in the Belt and Road infrastructure project, have been a source of friction with neighbouring India, which views its rival’s activity on the island as a national security threat.

Since joining embattled President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s government, Wickremesinghe has sought to smooth Sri Lanka’s relations with its allies in order to secure additional funding. Sri Lanka is seeking as much as $4bn from the IMF, and Wickremesinghe said he hoped a deal could be agreed as early as next month.

Wickremesinghe dismissed concerns that additional Chinese funding could complicate ties with India, which has been Sri Lanka’s biggest benefactor this year with credit lines, swaps and other assistance equivalent to more than $3bn.

But he added that India’s aid would “not [continue] beyond a point” and Sri Lanka would have to seek more funding from Japan and China.

“With India we’ve had a special relationship and, as long as we don’t do anything to harm India’s national security, we can get along,” he said.

Sri Lanka’s government this year asked China to renegotiate its existing debts, which total about $3.5bn. But Beijing has refused and instead offered to provide aid and additional loans.

The status of Sri Lanka’s debts to China is being closely watched by policymakers and analysts, who said Beijing had been reluctant to accept losses on its loans in other Belt and Road Initiative participants such as Zambia.

Wickremesinghe, who also took over the role of finance minister on Wednesday after the post was vacant for more than two weeks, said he would only approach Beijing and other creditors including private bondholders for restructuring talks once an IMF deal has been agreed.

But he added that it was too soon to know whether Sri Lanka could expect China to agree to equal treatment with other creditors including private bondholders. “We may not have that bargaining power,” he said. “Among the countries, we have to treat everyone the same at least.”

Securing IMF funding is likely to require politically contentious reforms such as cutting public spending and privatising state-owned companies. But Wickremesinghe, who is the only MP from his party, dismissed concerns that he lacked the support to see through such a process.

“I was asked to come in and resolve the crisis,” he said, adding that Sri Lanka’s parliament had to “first understand how deep the crisis is, then how we get out of it”.

“Choosing a prime minister in a crisis is quite different from choosing a prime minister in an election.”

This is becoming rather monotonous.....

you dug your own grave, in spite of being warned by India on numerous occasions, and yet it is always India that you turn again and again,

chit bhi meri, pat bhi meri है

हर हालत में अपना ही फायदा।

India Must Lead Quad Effort to Pull Out Sri Lanka from Clutches of China’s Debt Trap Diplomacy

https://www.news18.com/news/opinion/india-must-lead-quad-effort-to-pull-out-sri-lanka-from-clutches-of-chinas-debt-trap-diplomacy-5197465.html

and yet the demands continue, with nary a sign of others pitching in meaningfully

SL is unwilling to bite the bullet and enforce the necessary reforms that are needed to put the nation back on a sustainable path.

the SL government is currently giving a subsidy of around Sri Lankan Rupee (SLR) 30 per unit of electricity. Every liter of petrol is subsidized to the tune of SLR 80, diesel SLR 130, and kerosene SLR 295. This is untenable.

Even the pakis seem to have landed themselves in a very similar soup, with their unwashed abduls and ayeshas ready to revolt in case such subsidies are removed.

Indian High Commissioner Gopal Baglay handed over to Lankan Foreign Minister G.L. Peiris the consignment consisting of 9,000 metric tons of rice, 50 metric tons of milk powder and more than 25 metric tons of drugs and other medical supplies.

"Sri Lanka today received ₹2 Billion worth Humanitarian aid including milk powder, rice and medicines from India. Our sincere gratitude to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Hon. @mkstalin and the People of India for the support extended. I also appreciate the assistance given by the @IndiainSL and CWC Leader @S_Thondaman in Sri Lanka," Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe tweeted.

The new PM is on a good wicket.

All the blame goes to the rajapaksas, and if ranil wickremesinghe makes even the slightest headway in the resolution of the crises, he become a hero of sorts, and if he fails, which he most likely will, no one expected him to succeed anyway.

No one is going to lynch this guy.

In the fast fading light, he has been sent in to bat, as a nightwatchman onlee

To date, India had so far extended assistance worth $4.5 billion to SL.

In some way I was surprised someone like Rajapaksa handing over Hambantota… the guys who fight the Tigers to the end you would expect to be a bit more patriotic than sell away country assets…. Doesn’t matter how much yuan was thrown at you…
it seems subcontinent leaders grow massive egos and hubris very quickly… must be due to Xtian education and not much focus on Sanatan teaching… didn’t help with the people as well because they quickly put you on a pedestal and worship you … Namo being the exception of course…

Did he defeat the LTTE himself in hand to hand combat? More likely the rank and file of the SL Army did the job while he was in a position to be a power broker and take credit.

Gen Fonseka was the chief of army then. He too decided to contest elections after LTTE was defeated, but some cases were filed against him (by Rajapakse’s behest as I recall) and Fonseka withdrew after that.
