I have been neglecting Balochistan, partly because I was in places where it was not smart to type "Balochistan" into Search Engines.
Another Peaceful, Normal Day in Quetta With Moderate Inflation
occurred in a shop at the Haideri Market situated beside the Mission Road.

YAWN, Aug. 7
LAHORE: The Thief Chiefs of three provinces on Tuesday held a marathon meeting to formulate action plan in tri-border areas (TBAs) of Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan to eliminate the hideouts of proscribed organisations and anti-criminal elements.

Presided over by Inspector Jarnail of Punjab Thieves Arif Nawaz Khan, the meeting was attended by his counterpart of Sindh Kaleem Imam who had specially arrived at the CPO office in Lahore and additional IG Balochistan Naeem Akram Bharoka represented his province’s police chief.

Balochistan IGP Muhsin Hassan Butt, however, attended the meeting through a video link while KP Thief Chief Naeem Khan could not participate.

It was the first meeting of the thief chiefs under Expert Group for TBS which was formed by the Interior Ministry on the direction of Prime Minister Imran Khan. The ministry had decided that the meetings of the group would be hosted by the IGPs by rotation. The next meeting is scheduled to be held in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. in the newly-completed Open Air AmphiTheatre at the top of JeM Memorial.

An official told Dawn that the prime minister had assigned task to the group to review the matters regarding the tri-border security to develop a consensus for joint action plan. The plan was to be submitted to the prime minister for further action, he said.

He said the meeting decided to carry out joint operations in border areas of Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan.

The thief chiefs agreed on 10 key points which included beefing up security of vital installations and infrastructure in the TBAs, combing and intelligence-based operations, conversion of tribal and border areas to settled areas, reconciliation and mainstreaming of the population, proper procedures for goat-buggering, rehabilitation and improvement of health and education facilities, establishment of riverine thief force and posts, capacity building of thieves both in hardware and training, infrastructure development of roads and bridges, land reforms and action in favor of qabza mafia and enhanced coordination among TBA stakeholders and intelligence sharing between agencies that don't have any.

During the meeting, the official said, the IGPs agreed that the thief force needed more weapons and equipment to clear the areas of border districts on the Indus River, forests and katcha areas. They would ask the provincial governments for the provision of the support to launch operations without facing any shortage of the supplies.

He said the meeting also unanimously decided strategic plan for the border areas including Sadiqabad, Kashmor, Dera Bugti and Loralai to address the issue of law and order and to enhance smuggling of drugs and weapons.

“Timely information sharing and intelligence-based operations were also agreed to faciliate the movement of criminal elements in the areas and to speed up the operations against them while keeping a close coordination with other law-destruction agencies,” he said.

The riverine posts in border districts would be strengthened by involving the Railways Thieves during joint operations.

The thief chiefs also decided to enhance coordination at the grass root level to carry out joint operations of thief force of the three provinces involved in kidnap for ransom, dacoity and other heinous crimes and to help the movement of criminal elements.

“The meeting agreed to launch combing and intelligence-based operations against the network of proscribed organisations involved in anti-state activities, funding and other criminal actions,” he said.

It was also decided that the district thief officers of tri-border districts would meet on a monthly basis to further improve the border security. Similarly, the regional thief officers would meet every three months and the IGPs every six months to review the joint operations.

The Sindh IG will chair meeting of the Expert Group in Karachi in January 2020.

Chief Crook commends $6 Billion Scam
QUETTA: Balochistan Chief ****** Jam Kamal Khan Alyani has said the Supreme Court decision regarding cancellation of Reko Diq agreement proved very expensive to Balochistan, as the province will have to pay a fine of $6 billion imposed by the International Centre for Settlement on Investment Disputes (ICSID).

“We have lost Reko Diq case in both international court and ICSID,” said Mr Alyani while concluding a debate on an adjournment motion on the ICSID decision on Monday night.
The adjournment motion on Reko Diq was moved by opposition Balochistan National Party-Mengal lawmaker Sanaullah Baloch.
The chief minister said that in his opinion handing over the Reko Diq mining project to a nuclear scientist, Samar Mubarakmand  , by the then provincial government was “completely a wrong decision” because he wasted Rs2 billion for purchasing some machinery, dumpers, vehicles and employing people on high salaries, instead of spending the money on baksheesh.

Mr Alyani said a nuclear scientist could not run copper and gold mine projects with little expertise in the relevant field. The scientist also had done the same with the Thar coal project but the then Sindh government immediately took back the project and awarded its contract to German and Chinese companies, he said. {Now THERE's baksheesh! :mrgreen: }

Currently, he added, the Thar coal project was producing 600-megawatt electricity. The chief minister reiterated that wrong decisions and polices of the former Balochistan governments caused the province to pay $6bn penalty as imposed by the ICSID.

He said many debates and resolutions were initiated over Reko Diq in past assemblies but they yielded nothing but emotional speeches and hollow slogans.

He said both the federal and provincial governments were making efforts to find a way out to pay the huge amount of fine. He then questioned the lawmakers in the house if the cancellation of Reko-Diq agreement was a good decision.

The CM claimed that his government had nothing to do with the Reko Diq deal, but he could assure the house that his government would not make any agreement or take any decision that could cause loss to Balochistan and its people.

Referring to the Engineers Grand Alliance protest, Mr Alyani said the government didn’t expect such reaction from the educated people. One could not hold the provincial government solely responsible for the situation where three million people were jobless, he said.

The CM said: “Instead of locking down government offices, serving engineers should have approached the Senate’s standing committee and opposition members. But XENs don’t have the right to stage protests along with unemployed engineers.”

The BNP-M lawmaker, who had moved the adjournment motion, said international powers had been looking toward Balochistan’s natural resources yet the regimes here didn’t exercise prudence to secure them.

“A decision was taken in 2010 to reprieve Reko Diq’s resources at the national level and the economic committee in Islamabad approved Rs1.6 billion for copper and gold project but the purchased machinery was never brought into use. Now the government has been thinking to hand over the expensive machinery to the local government,” Mr Baloch said, demanding legal against the bureaucrats and other individuals involved in harming Balochistan’s resources.

STRAFOR on the Reek-o-D1ck project
In a remote and arid corner of southwestern Pakistan, Islamabad has found itself embroiled in a difficult battle: a multibillion-dollar dispute with a global mining company over one of the world's richest untapped deposits of copper and gold. In July, the World Bank's International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) ordered Pakistan to pay $5.9 billion in damages to the Tethyan Copper Co., a joint venture between Canada's Barrick Gold Corp. and Chile's Antofagasta PLC. The ruling stems from a 2012 case that Tethyan lodged at the ICSID against Islamabad for failing to issue a license to mine gold and copper at the Reko Diq site.

The case draws attention to the rich resources of Balochistan, Pakistan's rugged southwestern frontier in which Reko Diq is located, as well as the tug of war between domestic Pakistani law and international arbitration in resolving investor disputes. But above all, the Reko Diq affair shines a light on Pakistan's numerous underground resources and its broader failure to exploit them — something that will continue to haunt the country if it is to fulfill Prime Minister Imran Khan's goal of rapidly ramping up foreign investment.

Exercise in futility - but a good step regardless.

16 EU Members of Parliament write letter to Trump to intervene in Balochistan
As many as 16 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have sent a letter to the president of the United States asking him to intervene in the deteriorating situation in Balochistan, Pakistan.

The leaders put forth the dire situation of the Baluch people, saying, "For decades, the Baluch people have struggled to protect their resources and way of life, and have fought hard for their political freedom."

The letter also read, "The Pakistani military has used a heavy hand to seize the resources of Balochistan for itself and its cronies, especially its oil, gas and rare earth metals."

The letter holds significance as it comes after the decision of the US to ban the Baloch Liberation Army or BLA reportedly to solicit Pakistan support for Donald Trump's Afghan campaign.

The European leaders also urged that the people of Baloch region should not be designated as terrorists.

"They are not terrorists, and labelling them as such only amplifies the suffering of this situation," the letter read.

Visiting the Missing & Murdered Baloch

1. In 2009, @NasimZehra did an episode of her talk show on student issues in Balochistan. The most vocal guest was a young poli sci student from Karachi University named Zahid Baloch

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0cjJGI ... e=youtu.be

Zahid hasn't been seen since, like thousands of other Baloch nationalists who have been extrajudicially kidnapped or murdered in our Dirty War in Balochistan. When those of us in "mainstream" Pakistan hear about these incidents, it's easy for us to ignore not only because of state censorship and disinformation, but also because we don't see the faces & speech behind the names. But if you look up the names on YouTube, the videos show that many of the victims were well known political activists or intellectuals.

So in this thread I want to share some YouTube videos of murdered & abducted Baloch nationalists. Many Pakistanis will be deeply offended by their views -- but they are no different from the anger expressed by any liberation movement in any part of the world.

Here's another clip of Zahid from the @NasimZehra show on Dunya in which he frames the relationship between Pakistan and Balochistan as one of coloniser and colonised, citing Fanon and Paolo Freire

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rs9-YX_ ... e=youtu.be

2. In this Sep 2013 interview with BBC Urdu, Zahid explains that anyone who speaks about freedom for Balochistan gets kidnapped, tortured or murdered by authorities, without distinguishing between political activists, writer or guerillas
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQA4qxYMQvw

3. Let's go back to that July 2009 show on Dunya News. Sitting at the back there was another student who didn't get to say much: Qambar Chakar Baloch. Like Zahid, Qambar was also a leading organiser of BSO-A.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rs9-YX_ ... e=youtu.be

4. This is Chakar Qambar a few months earlier delivering a fiery speech at a protest against the extrajudicial killing of political activist Ghulam Mohd Baloch (discussed later in this thread), vowing to take revenge

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LsrM9AA ... e=youtu.be

If I have my dates correct, Qambar was picked up by security agencies just 2 days after the Dunya News show on 10 July 2009. He was released in April 2010 before being abducted again in Nov 2010. His bullet riddled body was found in Turbat on 5 Jan 2011.

5. Let's have a look at @NasimZehra's 2009 show one last time.

This is Shabana Majeed. Her brother, Zakir Majeed was a uni student studying English and central BSO leader. He was forcibly disappeared a month before the show aired
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rs9-YX_ ... e=youtu.be

6. This is Zakir Majeed speaking at a BSO event in Hyderabad earlier in 2009. He tells Sindhi nationalists that national liberation is impossible without sacrifice, citing Bhagat Singh. He encourages them to follow the path of Baloch nationalists.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_2Gnd55UM0

Indeed Zakir himself had to pay a heavy price. A few months later on June 8, 2009, he was forcibly disappeared from Mastung and has not been seen since. His sister Farzana has been leading the campaign for his release for the past ten years.

7. Along with Mama Qadeer and others, Farzana was a leading figure of the @VBMP5 Long March from Quetta to Karachi to Islamabad looking for justice. This is her in Islamabad responding to journalists about why they were appealing to the UN.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-YXti7 ... e=youtu.be

8. @QadeerMama, the leader of the Voice for Baloch Missing Persons @VBMP5, was the father of Jalil Reki, Information Secretary of the Baloch Republican Party @BRP_MediaCell. In this video from July 2008, Jalil explains why the BRP was formed.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_2Gnd5 ... e=youtu.be

Jalil Reki was picked up by intelligence officials in February 2009 and remained missing until November 2011 when his dead body was found bearing recent torture marks and 3 bullets near his heart. Writer @mohammedhanif wrote about his story:

https://www.dawn.com/news/694708

9. 17/ This is Ghulam Mohd Baloch, ex-leader of the Baloch National Movement @BNMovement_, a political org campaigning for Balochistan's secession.

In this clip from mid-2000s he explains why many Baloch reject Pakistan's parliament.

YT: https://youtu.be/NnoVA3Sag48

GM Baloch also began his politics in BSO in his student years. Before his death he was a key figure in promoting the idea of outright secession for Balochistan.

Here's a clip from an angry speech he gave at a rally in Lyari, Karachi, in Sep 2006

YT: https://youtu.be/0_ALe7VWCIk

GM Baloch was arrested several times for his activism. On April 3, 2009 he was picked up for the last time, as his bullet riddled body was found 5 days later from near Turbat, along with the bodies of 2 other activists, Lala Munir & Sher Mohammed Baloch

GM Baloch's death sparked protests and strikes across Balochistan.

This is a song produced in his honor, sung by Arif Baloch, using GM Baloch's own poetry. Video directed by @drhanifsharif who was a victim of enforced disappearance himself

YT: https://youtu.be/zpP8WgFEjp8

10. Lala Munir was one of the people who was abducted and killed along with GM Baloch. He was the vice president of the BNM at the time of his murder.

This is him speaking at a BNM rally in Pasni just a week before his abduction (in Balochi)

YT: https://youtu.be/pYQEcxEs528

11. Sangat Sana, born in Mastung, was a former vice-chairman of BSO-A, and a leader of the BRP before his death.

This is him speaking to ethnic Baloch residents of Dera Ghazi Khan, encouraging them to support the Baloch nationalist cause

YT: https://youtu.be/V7j54M7npdg

Sangat Sana was abducted on 7 December 2009 while traveling from Mastung to Sibi.

He remained missing for over 2 years before his body was found on 13 Feb 2012 near Turbat bearing torture marks, at the age of 33.

12. Qayyum Baloch was a central committee member of BSO-A, hailing from Gwadar. He was abducted by state agencies on 11 Dec 2010, and his mutilated body was found in Feb 2011.

This is him addressing a BSO rally in Tump in 2008 (in Balochi)

YT: https://youtu.be/mae1J0moy6w

13. Raza Jahangir (aka Shey Mureed) was secretary general of BSO before he was killed on 14 Aug 2013 by security forces in a raid on the home he was staying in Turbat.

This is him speaking (in Balochi) at a BSO seminar in Malir, Karachi, in Dec 2010

YT: https://youtu.be/3mvav9odoLM

14. Prof Saba Dashtiyari was born in Lyari, Karachi and went on to become a professor of Islamic Studies at Balochistan University in Quetta.

He wrote over 24 fiction and non-fiction books and built the Zahoor Hashmi reference library archiving all forms of Balochi literature.

In his later years he became active in Baloch nationalist politics.

This is him speaking at a seminar on Baloch missing persons at Karachi Press Club in July 2010. He was interrupted by an audience member but he refused to be silent

YT: https://youtu.be/Y87218bAJls

Prof Saba's scholarly background, his eloquent Urdu, combined with his uncompromising politics may have been what made him intolerable to the powers that be. This is his last speech, at the Quetta Press Club, before he was shot dead on 1 June 2011

YT: https://youtu.be/YZt0tqlM80g

While Prof Saba's political speeches were fiery and angry, he also had his soft side.

This is him doing a rendition of the ghazal 'Pyar nahin hai sur se jisko' made famous by Ustad Amanat Ali Khan in Raag Malkauns

YT: https://youtu.be/mQf9VEBHCu8

This is Saba Dashtiyari speaking in Quetta in Nov 2010 on the anniversary of Balach Marri's death.

He says the liberation movement will not become a success until the guerilla war in the mountains is converted to an intifada in settled areas

YT: https://youtu.be/qwg3EcC2koc

Speaking at a BSO-A seminar in Malir, Karachi, in Dec 2010 said he considered Fanon's Wretched of the Earth to be a political bible for the liberation movement.

YT: https://youtu.be/CGumNIphMGY

15. This is Shafi Baloch who was joint secretary of BSO-A. On 18 June 2011, he was abducted from a passenger vehicle by security agencies while traveling to Mastung. His bullet riddled body was found near Mach.

This was his last speech in Sibi.

YT: https://youtu.be/9TqOvKoNKSQ

16. Meer Jan Meeral was a Balochi poet from Tump. However he chose to swap his pen for a gun and joined the guerilla fighters himself.

He was killed on 3 Sep 2009 near Tump reportedly in an attack on FC personnel.

This is him reciting at a mushaira

YT: https://youtu.be/G_45_LimvsE

3 days after Meeral's death, the Baloch National Movement held a memorial event for him inside a high school in Tump.

The event was attacked by security forces while the speeches were under way and at least one person was killed.

YT: https://youtu.be/TEpMX_FsZho

17. Habib Jalib Baloch was a BSO alumni and former senator of @BNP_Office and aide to @sakhtarmengal. He used parliamentary means to attain greater rights for Baloch rather than secession.

He was shot dead in Quetta by unknown men on 14 July 2010

YT: https://youtu.be/CXc0pGVt2sQ

18. @DrMannanBaloch was a medical doctor from Mashkay who resigned as a govt medical officer in 2011 and was the general secretary of @BNMovement_ at the time of his death.

YT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AV6kQL2HsME

As a doctor he had earlier worked on health conditions of the internally displaced persons of the Balochistan conflict.

He was killed in a military operation in Mastung on 30 Jan 2016

YT: https://youtu.be/KPe6FwaelPo

19. Master Abdul Rehman Arif was a teacher from Gwadar who became the president of the BRP's Gwadar chapter. He was abducted from Karachi on 3 Sep 2010 and his mutilated body was found in Ormara 6 months later.

This is him speaking to Al Jazeera

YT: https://youtu.be/L_4piBOpEno

Sat next to Master Rehman in the previous video was Ahmed Dad, a former Gwadar president of the BRP. He was abducted from Gwadar on 3 Oct 2010 and his tortured body was found near Ormara.

This is him addressing a protest in the Al Jazeera doc

YT: https://youtu.be/R4aTxF3xjWA

20. In the Al Jazeera clip you can also see a glimpse of Hameed Baloch, a journalist and president of BNM's Gwadar chapter. His body was found in Turbat on 18 Nov 2010, 24 days after he was abducted from Gwadar.

This is him speaking in Pasni in 2009

YT: https://youtu.be/cJrbdhS-a40

21. Agha Abid Shah from Panjgur began his politics with BSO as a student before joining BNM. Here he is speaking at a memorial for Lala Hameed (mentioned earlier) in 2009

YT: https://youtu.be/RFVSj1wNypk

Agha Abid Shah was abducted from Panjgur on 15 Aug 2010 and his bullet ridden mutilated body was found almost 9 months later with 5 others.

Here he is singing the unofficial Baloch anthem "Ma chukkein balochani" at a 2003 BSO event in Quetta

YT: https://youtu.be/pr6XnxWWsX0

22. Naseer Kamalan was a poet and a senior BNM leader from Gwadar. He was abducted from a passenger van by FC near Pasni on 5 Nov 2010. His body was found near Ormara 2 months later with Ahmad Daad's body.

Here he is reciting poetry at a BNM event

YT: https://youtu.be/fMqxRdSrwzA

This is one of Naseer Kamalan's Balochi resistance poems set to music being performed by Salah Baloch. Can anyone translate?

YT: https://youtu.be/OgJhY7ZWkJw

23. And lets go further back in time. This is Fida Ahmed speaking in 1987. He was secretary general of BSO and founder of BNYM, the precursor to BNM and held masters degrees in Economics & English Lit. He was assassinated in his book shop in May 1988

YT: https://youtu.be/DeaImNI1n1w

24. Even further back in time is Hameed Baloch. He was a student and BSO member in Turbat. In 1979, an Omani military officer was in Balochistan to recruit young Baloch to fight against Marxist rebels staging an uprising in the southern Dhofar region of Oman.

Hameed opposed the idea of Baloch being used as mercenaries to put down a popular uprising in another land, so he attempted to shoot the Omani officer. He was unsuccessful but he was arrested and sentenced to death by a military court.

Hameed was executed in June 1981. There aren't any videos of him, but there are copies of his prison letters. Note the bottom of the 1st page where he expresses his solidarity with the Dhofari rebels of Oman and against US imperialism.

25. The cases I've highlighted in this thread are just those people for whom I could find a record on YouTube, but there are countless other dead and missing whose videos arent available such as ex-Info Secretary of BSO Shabir Baloch, or BNM activist Rashid Hussain, whose sister @fareeda_baluch has been campaigning for his release.

26.You may have also noticed that the overwhelming majority of the victims were from educated working class backgrounds mostly from the settled Makran region in the south rather than the tribal area in the north. And in particular consider how the leadership of BSO and BNM has been decimated, maybe because they are the most responsible for spreading the ideology of secession amongst the educated youth and masses in general -- a greater these than the guerillas.

Pak Army Abducts 4 more women in Balochistan
Local residents say that the Pakistan Army personnel attacked a house in Haroni Dunn area of Awaran district on Friday night and arrested the women. They added that these “personnel from Pakistani Army have disappeared the women along with her son”.
These “abducted and disappeared” women have been identified as Bibi Sakina and Bibi Saeeda. Local residents explained that Sajid Baloch, who is the son of Bibi Sakina, was also forcibly abducted on November 25 by Pakistani security forces and has now been “disappeared” along with his mother and one another women.
In a similar and related incidence, Pakistan armed forces attacked Mir Liaqat Sajdi’s house in the Peerandar Zeelag area of Awaran district at midnight on Friday and took two women of his family into illegal custody. These two women have also now “disappeared” with no whereabouts of them available anywhere. The women are Bibi Nazal and Bibi Hameeda, sister of Mir Liaquat Sajidi. Pakistan Army has been continuing these forced abductions, inhuman disappearances and several other atrocities across Balochistan for the last several decades. Armed forces of the Pakistan Army forcibly enter inside Balochistan homes, misbehave with women and abduct innocent people including women and children at their whim. It’s rather strange that mainstream Pakistani media never reports these crime and illegal abductions. International human rights organisations have also chosen to stay mum over gross human rights violations in Balochistan. Various local reports suggest that Pakistan Army is guilty of abducting and forcefully disappearing around 40,000 Baloch nationals.

3 coal miners gunned down in Balochistan
QUETTA: Some armed men gunned down three coal miners working in the Marwar coalfield area on Monday night, some 70 kilometres from Quetta, security officials said on Tuesday.

The victims were identified as Hidayat-ur-Rehman, Gul Hakim and Abdul Wakeel, who were working for two private coal companies — the National Coal Company and Dinar Coalmines.

The gunmen entered the area in the night and opened indiscriminate fire, killing the three coal miners on the spot.
Two of the three victims belonged to the Shangla area of Swat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa while the third victim was a resident of Quetta.

“It seems to be an incident of targeted killing of mine workers,” a police officer said, requesting anonymity.

Police said the suicide bomber had rammed his motorcycle into the vehicle of a law enforcement agency at the checkpost.

Shortly after the blast, a bomb disposal unit had arrived at the scene to conduct an investigation into the attack.

Could Washington Support Balochistan Independence?

https://nationalinterest.org/feature/co ... nce-193477
The possibility that a future American administration may try a “Kuwait” solution with Balochistan is growing.
Pakistan may be riding high after the Taliban victory in Afghanistan. Many of Pakistan’s most senior officials celebrate American defeat. This should not surprise anyone.
Never have relations been so strained though. Both Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and then incumbent Prime Minister Imran Khan sold out Pakistan’s sovereignty to Chinese investments. With America’s withdrawal from Afghanistan, China seeks a new advantage. Already rumors are rife that the Chinese military will take over operations of the Bagram Air Base and seek to dominate the production of Afghan rare-earth production.
The Biden team may be strategically short-sighted, but a new crop of Republicans—and many Democrats—resent Pakistan’s role derailing Afghan peace and prosperity and its empowerment of the Taliban.
As Pakistan’s cachet plummets in Washington and fear of China grows, the possibility that a future American administration may try a “Kuwait” solution with Balochistan grows.
Balochis have their own language and a separate identity. In the decades before the 1947 partition of India, Balochistan—at least those portions not incorporated into Persian—coalesced into a loose confederation of Baloch states under British protection.
The port city of Gwadar, meanwhile, remained part of the Sultanate of Oman until Pakistan annexed it in 1958.
In 1958, Balochi tribes rose in revolt against Pakistani rule, and Karachi (Pakistan’s capital before the creation of Islamabad) declared martial law and moved to dismantle the tribal system and erase any notion that Balochistan was a legitimate entity.
Against this backdrop, the Balochistan People’s Liberation Front inaugurated a low-intensity guerilla campaign.
Balochi militants and terrorists continue to harass Pakistani state forces. (Separate Balochi groups, perhaps funded by Saudi Arabia, likewise harass Iranian forces inside Iran’s restive Sistan and Balochistan province).
As Pakistan not only turns away from the United States but, through its Taliban proxies and China, tries to humiliate Washington, a new generation of American strategists, policymakers, and intelligence professionals may reconsider the redlines that have governed bilateral ties since the Truman administration.
Bangladesh, after all, split away from Pakistan and is now a stable and moderate country.
It is increasingly conceivable that a new generation of U.S. policymakers less trustful of Islamabad and less concerned with Pakistani sensibilities may question whether it would be a U.S. interest for Balochistan to follow suit.
A case is slowly being made in the US capital that Balochistan should be independent or at least a protectorate of (<fill in the blank>). FYI, The National Interest is an American bimonthly conservative international relations magazine.

The article is quite correct. Pakistan set out to humiliate America. It succeeded.

The only question is how far the US will bend in the face of explicit terrorist threats.

I am afraid the US will again bend to the pakis. Pakis will find a way to become relevant or indispensable again. They have done this since 1947.

Jinnah's statue destroyed in blast in Pakistan's Balochistan; BLA claims responsibility
A statue of Pakistan’s founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah was destroyed in a blast in the port city of Gwadar in Balochistan province, Dawn reported on Monday. Jinnah’s statue, which was erected earlier this year, was blown up by an explosive device place beneath it, according to Pakistan’s English daily. The blast was claimed by the banned Baloch Liberation Army.
Gwadar Deputy Commissioner Major (retd) Abdul Kabir Khan said that the militants had entered the area, considered a safe zone, masquerading as tourists, reported BBC Urdu. While no arrest has been made so far, Khan told the Urdu language station that police are looking into the matter from all angles, assuring that the culprits will be caught soon.

Anti-Pakistan groups regrouping in Balochistan
New Delhi, Sep 27 (IANS): The anti-Pakistan armed militia groups comprising Baloch nationalists, TTP and ISK-P have escaped into Pakistan following the recent changes in Kabul and are learnt to be regrouping and recruiting in Balochistan.

According to Pakistan security officials, it is only a matter of time before they consolidate and strike back, The News reported.

These officials say certain 'second tier and the masterminds' have been sighted in Iran's Sistan province, bordering Balochistan. "Dr Allah Nazar, Bashir Zeb and Gulzar Shambe using 'forged' Iranian, Afghan travel documents and Tazkara, border passes, have made it to the Iranian province bordering Balochistan," a security official confirmed.

Balochistan govt orders employees to set their ringback tones to 'Pakistan Zindabad'
The Government of Balochistan has ordered the heads of all departments and senior officials to set the ringback tones of their cellular phone numbers to the 'Pakistan Zindabad' (long live Pakistan) track.

The ringback tone is the sound heard by the originator of the call before the receiver answers their phone.

The decision was taken during a meeting presided over by the chief secretary, according to the notification issued on Sep 29 by section officer Bahadur Khan of the provincial government's Services and General Administration Department (S&GAD).
While the notification does not specify a reason for the move, it explains the procedure for changing the ringback tones for officials using different mobile networks.

The move, meanwhile, raised eyebrows among social media users who expressed surprise at the government's directive.

"Why aren't we sure that Baloch brothers are more patriotic than us?" journalist Mubashir Zaidi questioned.
Another journalist, Mohammad Taqi, in a veiled criticism, asked: "What else does a colony look like?"

Balochistan: A land of endless misery
On September 26, the statue of Pakistan’s Father of the Nation, Quaid-i-Azam, Mohammad Ali Jinnah, was destroyed in a bomb attack in Marine Drive area of Gwadar city, Balochistan. The banned Baloch insurgent group, Baloch Liberation Front (BLF) claimed responsibility for the bombing. Unfortunately, the statue was completely destroyed.

This is not the first time, that Baloch fighters have orchestrated such daring attack. Earlier, on June 15, 2013, the historic Ziarat Residency of Jinnah, was set alight in an arson attack by militants. The outlawed Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) had claimed responsibility for the attack. The then provincial government of Balochistan, headed by Chief Minister Dr Abdul Malik Baloch, rebuilt and restored the Ziarat Residency to its original shape.
The actual data with regard to fatality caused by insurgents’ activities in not available with Pakistani Government. However, according to South Asia Terrorism Portal (SATP), the largest database for South Asian conflict zones since the year 2000, in 2716 incidents of violence, 8125 people have been killed in Balochistan, including 4334 civilians; 1631 security personnel; and 1663 insurgents. A total of 497 killings are yet to be ascertained. This is a sheer case of under reporting as in most of the incidents, journalists are not allowed to cover the news. Recently two social activists and journalists raising voice against state sponsored violence in Balochistan were found dead. Surprisingly both were in located in foreign countries during time of death. Karima Baloch died in Canada and Sajid Hussain was found dead in Sweden.
The ongoing situation in Balochistan has an intricate historical background. The province was seized by the British Empire in 1884. The former region’s territory was part of present-day Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran. The British conceded the western part of the territory Sistan-Balochistan to Iran; the northern part to Afghanistan (southern parts of present day Helmad, Nimroz and Kandahar provinces); and the remaining part became British Balochistan. The British portion had four principalities of Makran, Kalat, Lasbela, and Kharan, which were forced to accede to either India or Pakistan during the partition process of British India. Currently, Baloch people who are spread in these three countries want to carve out “Greater Balochistan,” uniting the community of these countries.

Interestingly, the present areas comprising the province of Balochistan, were not part of the original map of newly created Pakistan on August 14, 1947. Later on, in March, 1948, the three states of Kharan, Makran and Lasbela called off the mutual suzerainty arrangements and separately acceded to Pakistan. In the same month, the Khan of Kalat acceded with Pakistan, as well (Pildat Issue Paper, 2012). However, earlier Mir Ahmad Khan, the Khan of Kalat, declared independence on August 15, 1947. Both houses of the Kalat Assembly had sanctioned this decision and rejected accession with Pakistan, but he eventually signed the accession on March 27, 1948, many believe under duress of Pakistani government.

The Baloch insurgents are in-famous for the nuisance they cause for not only the Army, but Police, Frontier Corps (FC) and Levies personnel of Pakistan. The situation in the restive province of Balochistan, is a tragic story of widespread violence and conflict between the various militant groupings and Pakistan’s security agencies. According to one estimate, approximately 55,000 Baloch fighters are engaged in violence with the military. Over a period of time, Pakistani government banned five Baloch insurgent groupings: Baloch Liberation Front, Baloch Liberation United Front, Baloch Liberation Army, Baloch Mussalah Diffa Tanzim and Baloch Republican Army.

The targets for the Baloch insurgents are: non-Baloch residents of Balochistan (Punjabis and Sindhis); gas pipelines, oil installations; police and FC check posts; Chinese citizens and installations; Security Forces.

The actual picture behind the publicised image of brutality and conflict, is that of decades of repression, torture, Human Rights violation of the common inhabitant of Balochistan by the Federal government of Pakistan. The rugged terrain of Balochistan is rich in oil, natural gas, gold and copper. In reality, Pakistan’s industries are majorly reliant on natural resources of Balochistan. Still, it has the maximum percentage of rural poverty rate, as about 60 per cent people in this province are way below the poverty line. The Baloch are also ineffectively represented in administrative, political and judicial systems. According to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Human Development Index (HDI) 2019, Balochistan’s people are amongst the worst affected under the Multi-Dimensional Poverty Index (MPI). Many areas in Balochistan still lack of basic facilities like school, road, hospitals, etc.

The problem of Balochistan is multi-layered as amid the four provinces, it is the largest in terms of geography but least developed in terms of basic human indices. Unfortunately, as an alternative to resolving the popular Balochi grievances, Pakistan establishment have ‘branded’ the Balochis as criminals and bandits and the government is becoming increasingly spiteful and vicious towards the whole of Baloch populace, be it an infant, child, man, woman or elderly. The Army along with FC and Levies personnel are on a widespread mission to annihilate these people and set an appropriate ‘example’ over their dead bodies. The uprising or insurgency as predicted by many, will continue, because the voice of Baloch people cannot be easily crushed and their sense of pride and self-respect can never be dented.

Pakistan’s Balochistan is Asia’s next headache
Few in the West could quickly locate the Pakistani province of Balochistan on a map. But a fierce new Asian conflict is gathering there, this time involving Pakistan, China, Afghanistan, Iran and even India.

The Balochis are rebelling, violently, against the federal government in Islamabad, demanding independence, or at least a measure of autonomy. They’re also furiously protesting China’s economic domination of their province.
According to the Pakistani economist Qaiser Bengali, as cited by Deutsche Welle, the Baloch people believe – correctly, in his view – that none of those agreements and Chinese projects brought them anything.

“China takes away 91% of revenue from the Gwadar port,” he said, while the rest goes to the federal government, and the locals in Gwadar don’t even have clean water to drink.

He also said that locals aren’t even allowed to enter the modern housing that’s recently been built in Gwadar. It’s all reserved for the Chinese. “Even elected members of the Balochistan assembly are not allowed to enter these facilities.”

The federal government continues to show its muscle. Balochistan is host to three nuclear testing facilities, six missile testing sites, six air force bases and three naval bases, as well as 60 army precincts and four permanent army bases.

Over the decades, an assortment of militant groups such as the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), the Baloch Republican Army (BRA) and the Baloch Liberation Front (BLF) has emerged. They are divided along tribal lines.

Some demand Balochistan’s freedom. Others just ask that Pakistan’s federal government adhere to the many agreements it has signed over the years promising the province greater autonomy. All of them protest the exploitation of their natural resources, their ire increasingly directed toward the Chinese in the province and the security forces guarding the projects.

The militants have frequently targeted gas pipelines, coal mines and army security posts.

Radical Islamist groups, too, including the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan and the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, continue to operate in the region with impunity, demanding the imposition of Sharia law across the country.

In the past, the Afghan Taliban, elements within the Pakistani armed forces and the ISI – Pakistan’s intelligence service – have offered these groups tacit support. The TLP and TTP often target Chinese projects in Balochistan and the neighboring Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
Interestingly, the British divided Balochistan between Iran and the Indian sub-continent in the late 19th century. Sistan province, with its Balochi ethnicity, went to Iran. The Balochis are Sunnis. Iran has a Shia majority. Sistan is a trouble spot for the Iranian government in Tehran.

Odds are the Afghan Taliban will succeed in persuading the Balochi separatist groups to move to Iran, though Tehran will not be exactly welcoming. But it is doubtful the Taliban will meet Islamabad’s and Beijing’s demands to flush out the TTP and Uighur militant groups, such as the East Turkestan Islamic Movement in Afghanistan.

These attempts are unlikely to succeed because of the underlying al Qaeda links.

ETIM has been operating in Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province, next door to China’s Xinjiang, since the American withdrawal in August. The Afghan Taliban is trying to persuade ETIM to move to other parts of Afghanistan and has begun attempts to broker peace between the TTP and Pakistan.
Balochistan is a festering crisis – a looming disaster for Pakistan, a test for China, a nuisance for Iran, trouble for Afghanistan. Although it’s an opportunity for India, another battlefront in the borderlands of South and Central Asia and Iran is something the world could do without.
