Tribal communities across the North-East struggle to Maintain their Ethnic Identities
Most ethnic groups and tribal communities across the North-eastern region are currently undergoing a phase where they are struggling to protect their respective identities. Over 200 years ago, majority of the communities across the region had practiced various indigenous faiths, which mostly revolved around worship of Nature. Trees, rocks, rivers, thunder, rain, earth, animals — Nature was worshipped in various forms, each depicting or denoting a particular aspect or power of Nature. With the expansion of Hinduism in the remote past, as also when groups of people from mainland India started arriving in the region, it led to expansion of various Hindu sects, particularly to the Brahmaputra Valley. The Ahoms, for instance, had brought with them their own deities when they had arrived in Assam in the third decade of the thirteenth century.

But then, while they ruled over the larger portion of present-day Assam, hardly did they try to enforce their original faith upon the subjects. Instead, the Ahoms, who had first adopted and enriched the local Assamese language, later also adopted Hinduism, in the process getting Brahmin priests from Bengal and central India to run Hindu temples that they established and began patronizing. When Srimanta Sankaradeva propounded his ‘Ek-sarana naam-dharma’, he too did not enforce it on others, but adopted a rather democratic and open strategy which not only attracted Brahminical priests, but also people from other faiths. This way he also reduced the impact of typical Hindu casteism in the broader Assamese society. The Vaishnavite Satra institutions that were established following Sankaradeva’s teachings too adopted an open system, in which there was neither any compulsion on people to join them, nor any exclusion if one did not. Things however drastically began to change with the arrival of the Christian missionaries in the region, beginning with the American Baptist Mission within less than a decade of the annexation of Assam to British India.

The British did invite the evangelists to win over the ‘wild’ tribals with the message of the gospel and it took hardly one hundred years for most tribals of the region, barring those of Tripura and present-day Arunachal Pradesh, to owe allegiance to a new faith. Things have also begun to change rapidly in these two States in the past three or four decades, with a sizeable section of tribal communities abandoning their respective indigenous faiths and adopting a new religion. Different people cite different reasons behind the conversions — ranging from getting out of the clutches of superstitions to freeing oneself from lengthy and expensive rituals. Education and healthcare however are two aspects that have played a major role in communities almost en masse switching over to a new faith, while some have a point in stating that conversions have changed lives of people for good. It is however a matter of debate and examination whether people — individuals as well as communities — have adopted new faiths voluntarily, under certain compulsions, or under some kind of allurement.

Arunachal Pradesh had way back in 1978 enacted the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, which prohibits forcible conversion. The Act clearly said that “No person shall convert or attempt to convert, either directly or otherwise, any person from indigenous faith by use of force or by inducement or any fraudulent means, nor shall any person abet any such conversion”. Despite that however, the percentage of Christians among the tribal population of Arunachal Pradesh has risen from 13.6 percent in 1991 to 40.9 percent in 2011. Worried over the changing demography in the frontier State that shares over 1,000 km of international boundary with China, the present government in 2017 created an independent department to look after preservation, protection and promotion of the rich indigenous cultural heritage of the State.

As Chief Minister Pema Khandu had put it while announcing creation of the said department, the indigenous communities of the State were fast getting disconnected with their rich culture and languages due to globalization, exposure and external influences. While such issues have occasionally emanated from Majuli, the heart of Vaishnavite art, culture and faith, the movement for preservation of indigenous Khasi faith in Meghalaya from being ‘swamped’ by Western ideas has completed 120 years. While it is a fact that Christian missionaries had contributed immensely towards spread of education in the remote areas of the region where the government was practically invisible for long, it is also a fact that much of the rich cultural practices of the communities — as has been indirectly pointed out by Pema Khandu — are on the verge of being gradually wiped out, if not already so. The debate, however, can go on.

I am lost.
1. Where is the Myanmar Thread please?
2. Todin's Wall Street Yoorinal says that Indian Lower House passed a bill allowing NON-MUSLIM immigrants in Northeast to become Indian citjens, but not Muslims. Of course this is viewed by the desi-named sh1ts quoted there as "ripping the Secular Fabric of India" etc. Nowhere is the point being made that this is "discrimination" only between real, helpless refugees driven out of their land by the genocidal Islamists, and the genocidal Islamists themselves invading as economic "immigrants" after reducing their own land to a sh1thole.

‘Guided by prejudices & biases’: India hits back at US after it threatened sanctions over citizenship bill
10 Dec, 2019 12:12 / Updated 13 hours ago

New Delhi slammed the US state-run religious freedom watchdog after it claimed that India’s new citizenship bill is discriminatory towards the country’s Muslims and threatened India with sanctions.

The criticism of the citizenship bill by the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) is “neither accurate nor warranted,” India’s Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement on Tuesday.

The position articulated by USCIRF is not surprising given its past record. It is, however, regrettable that the body has chosen to be guided only by its prejudices and biases on a matter on which it clearly has little knowledge.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, or CAB, was approved on Monday by the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian parliament. The legislation simplifies the process of acquiring citizenship for Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and Parsis who have arrived from Pakistan, Afghanistan or Bangladesh.

Attacking the bill, the USCIRF called it discriminatory because it “excludes” India’s Muslim community. The commission further stressed that the US government should consider sanctioning Indian top-ranking officials if the bill becomes law.

The legislation was also criticized by the opposition parties in India and sparked protests among Muslims.
Home Minister Amit Shah, however, said that the CAB is simply aimed at protecting persecuted people coming from countries where Muslims are the majority. He assured Muslims that the bill is not directed against them and they “have no reason to fear.”

The Ministry of External Affairs reiterated that “the CAB does not affect the existing avenues to all communities interested in seeking citizenship from doing so.”

Despite a U-turn by its former ally Shiv Sena, and murmurs of dissent within its alliance partner JD(U), the government is all set to get the numbers required to pass the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019, in the Rajya Sabha Wednesday.
The Bill, which was cleared by the Lok Sabha with a 311-80 margin at 12.02 am Tuesday, seeks to provide Indian citizenship to non-Muslims who entered the country from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan until December 31, 2014.
Setting the stage for the next round, Sena chief and Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said his party would not back the Bill in the Rajya Sabha if its queries are not addressed by the government. The Sena has three MPs in the Upper House, which has a current strength of 240. Meanwhile, senior JD(U) leader Pavan K Varma echoed reservations expressed by his colleague Prashant Kishor over the Bill, and asked party president and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to “reconsider” its position. But sources in Patna said the JD(U) is unlikely to change its stance in the Rajya Sabha where it has six MPs.
Ram Madhav: Citizenship Bill continues long tradition of welcoming persecuted minorities
While government sources said they were confident of getting the Bill through, Opposition members said they would “make them bleed” with the TMC alone planning to move 20 amendments.
With the BJP’s 83 MPs and those of its allies, such as JD(U) and SAD (3) and others — regional parties such as AIADMK (11), BJD (7) and YSR Congress (2) are favourably inclined — the government is eyeing at least 128 votes in its support, without the Sena. This calculation leaves the Opposition, including Congress, Trinamool Congress, DMK, SP, Left parties and others — the TRS voted against the Bill in Lok Sabha — with 112 votes.
In Mumbai, Sena sources said that Thackeray had to clarify the party’s new position on the Bill after its 18 MPs in the Lok Sabha did not follow his instructions to walk out during voting Monday.
A Sena leader said that two-three senior party MPs were not present when discussions on the Bill were taking place. “So, the message could not be communicated to other party MPs. When they returned, they did not get a chance to raise their points and the Bill was put up for voting,” the leader said.

Numbers favour govt in RS

The Shiv Sena’s U-turn reflects the new political alignment in Maharashtra and the JD(U) is trying to strike a balance with Bihar going to polls next year. But the government is eyeing at least 128 votes in the 240-member RS to push the CAB through.
“Uddhav has given a dressing down to two senior MPs for causing embarrassment to him and to the party,” he said. Thackeray said the party had asked the government “many questions” on the Bill. “Those questions, we thought, would be answered, ranging from national security to rights of locals in various states. If these queries are not answered, we won’t support the CAB in Rajya Sabha,” he said.
Explained | USCIRF, the Commission concerned over CAB; What are its functions?
“There’s a perception that whoever votes with the central government is a patriot and who votes against is anti-national. We must get out of that illusion,” he said.
A Sena leader said the party had suggested to the central government that voting rights should not be given to “infiltrators” for the next 25 years “to avoid votebank politics”.
Also read | The legal question: Opposition argues CAB would fall foul of Constitution
In Patna, JD(U) sources said that despite the dissenting voices, Nitish Kumar is unlikely to take action against Varma and Kishor. Sources said the dissent “might be a tactical move” to gauge the mood among the JD(U) votebase on a Bill that has been described by Opposition parties as “divisive” and “communal”.
Harsh Mander farts | Can India refuse to own me?
Varma, a former Rajya Sabha MP, tweeted: “I urge Shri Nitish Kumar to reconsider support to the #CAB in the Rajya Sabha. The Bill is unconstitutional, discriminatory, and against the unity and harmony of the country, apart from being against the secular principles of the JDU. Gandhiji would have strongly disapproved it.”
On Monday night, Kishor had tweeted: “Disappointed to see JDU supporting #CAB that discriminates right of citizenship on the basis of religion. It’s incongruous with the party’s constitution that carries the word secular thrice on the very first page and the leadership that is supposedly guided by Gandhian ideals.”
The JD(U)’s official spokesperson, however, refrained from taking a position on these remarks. “Whatever our MP Rajiv Ranjan Singh said in the Lok Sabha is our official stand,” said Neeraj Kumar. Singh had echoed Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks that CAB would pose “no threat to minorities in India”.

Any insight on why the Assamese are agitating against the CAB? My social media is full of SJW Assamese, who claim that Assamese are inherently secular don't buy into a 'Hindu identity', hence the protests. What's really the issue though? Is it some kind of fear about Bengali speaking Hindus from BD crowding them out?

Since Independence there's been a steady trickle of Bengalis from former E.Pak into India. The trickle became a tsunami before the '71 war. Lakhs of immigrants have entered into India even after '71 and the creation of B'Desh. Corrupt border guards and police in W.Bengal and politicos of all tribes, make crores upon crores each day through illegal cross-border activities that include gold smuggling, human trafficking ,fake currency courtesy the ISI through its cells in BD , and cattle trafficking too. Many BD citizens with good situations in BD cross over, get Indian cards, etc. thanks to corrupt officials , and conduct their biz activities on both sides travelling to and fro with proper legal documents! I was party to a conversation in the SC some months ago with a v.high placed GOI rep. along with a politico where the issue entered the conversation and what line the GOI should adopt. Sev. ideas were discussed.

The CAB bill passed ( it has its pros and cons) is of a different nature and has unfortunately set the N-E alight as Assamese and others feel that they will be swamped by the immigrants once given citizenship and voting rights. To my mind, an own goal for the govt. You cannot churn the entire country with around 30 different states, dozens of languages and varied culture into one huge melting pot producing just one type of Indian under the diktat of one official language, Hindi. It will destroy the unity that binds the country together and increase separatist tendencies especially in south India. Why Tamil Hindu refugees who fled from Sri Lankan state pogroms and massacres have not been included in the bill is a mystery. To Tamil parties it is another insult to their people, lingo and culture. Why have no Christian refugees from Pak not been included? The Muslims have been excluded too in toto, to deep anguish amongst Indian Muslims.

The sad situ of the Indian army being sent to quell the riots indicates the gravity of the situ .Several have been shot sayeth the media, also gagged not to report or show clips on tv. We now have trouble on both wings of the country, Kashmir and the N-East.A disaster. We cannot forever enforce a military clampdown on our citizens in both regions. The visit of the Japanese PM and BD ministers have also been cancelled, adding yet another international dimension to the issue. The UN has just criticised it too giving a convenient handle for anti-Indian entities to attack India . Several other states, non BJP say that they will not implement the bill and the SC will be kept busy with petitions agsinst the bill. Very tough times ahead for the nation.

Ardeshir, the Bengali Hindus have different language, culture, food habits and social customs compared to the many hindu/animist ethnic groups in Assam and tripura. The Bengali's first flooded the state of Tripura and completely overthrew the local tripuri dominance. The same will happen with Assam if this Bengali population is not evicted to the state of west Bengal.

The NRC is meant to cement an ethno-lingual group(for eg the Gujarati's) as the rightful heirs of their home state - Gujarat. Or the marathis to Maharashtra. Many Bengali Hindus were left out of the assam NRC list because of this very reason but many people have still not understood the purpose of NRC yet. It aims as securing the identity of a state to its own people. When NRC gets going in Karnataka, many non-kannadiga/tulu Hindus are going to be left out and that's going to create another round of controversy.

CCEA approves Rs5,559-cr capital grant for North East gas grid.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on Wednesday approved a Rs5,559-crore capital grant as viability gap funding to Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited for setting up the North East Natural Gas Pipeline Grid.

The viability gap funding will meet 60 per cent of the estimated cost of Rs9,265 crore (Including interest during construction) of the project. The quantum of VGF would be capped at 60 per cent of estimated project cost and would not be linked with upward capital cost variation, says a CCEA release.

Ministry of petroleum and natural gas will identify milestones for major activities for this project and link the same for releases of capital grant of the project. For effective monitoring of the project implementation, a committee comprising of officials from ministry of petroleum and natural gas, Department of Expenditure, ministry of development of north east region, ministry of environment, forest and climate change, and department of fertilizers, may be formed. The committee would periodically review the progress in implementation of the project and take steps to smoothen out any issues in execution.

The gas pipeline will have a total length of 1,656 km spanning the eight states of the North-Eastern region, ie, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura.

The capital grant will provide natural gas supplies to various types of consumers, viz, industrial, PNG (domestic), CNG (transport) etc and would immensely help in substituting liquid fuels. The pipeline grid would ensure reliability and uninterrupted natural gas supplies to the consumers which otherwise gets severely affected due to various reasons in this part of the country.

Availability of natural gas across the region is expected to boost industrial growth without impacting the environment and would offer better quality of life to the people in general due to use of cleaner and green fuel. Besides, the gas grid will have socio-economic and environmental benefits like:
Development of industrial climate in the eight states of the north-eastern region;
Reduction in the usage of kerosene, wood etc due to increased usage of environment friendly fuel thereby improving the environment in the region; and
Improvement in the standard of living of peoples living in the region.

Besides, the gas grid will boost exploration and production activities and connect regional gas sources with pipeline network for early monetisation of natural resources in the region. It will also open up possibility of installing bottling plants for LPG, besides the supply of LPG and other value added products in the region, which will bring energy security to the people in the area.

Indradhanush Gas Grid Ltd (IGGL) is a joint venture company of five central public sector enterprises, namely IndianOil, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, GAIL, Oil India and Numaligarh Refinery Ltd. The joint venture was incorporated in August 2018 to develop and operate a natural gas pipeline grid in the North East.

“The Capital Grant will provide natural gas supplies to various types of consumers, including Industrial, PNG (Domestic), and CNG (Transport), among others, and would help in substituting liquid fuels. The pipeline grid would ensure reliable and uninterrupted natural gas supplies to consumers who are otherwise severely affected due to various reasons in this part of the country,” the release stated.

“The possibility of installing bottling plants for LPG can be explored to reduce transportation costs. Uninterrupted supply of LPG and other value-added products can be ensured in the region, which will bring energy security to the people in the area,” the release added.

This is puzzling, if true. Why would legitimate citizens be left out of anything, even if there is a desire to affirm the character of a particular state. There are south Indians in Kolkata, Bengalis in Bangalore, UPites in Maharashtra, Marathis in Punjab, Gujuratis in Orissa, and so on.. If they are Indian citizens, why should they be left out?

Varoon,

The Indian republic is a union, of distinct ethno-lingual cultures. The subcontinent has a history of interculture warfare and conspiracies to usurp land and territories of each other. The NRC is meant to secure the future of the federal castes. The CAA is meant to secure the future of indic cultures.

Amid concerns over China’s hydropower project on Brahmaputra, India plans multipurpose dam in Northeast.
India to build multipurpose reservoir in Arunachal Pradesh! Amid concerns over a major hydropower project being developed by China on the Brahmaputra river in Tibet, India now plans to develop a multipurpose reservoir in the northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh. Commissioner (Brahmaputra and Barak) in the Jal Shakti Ministry, T S Mehra was quoted in a PTI report saying that the multi-purpose 10,000 MW hydropower project is under consideration right now. According to Mehra, this hydropower project will help offset the impact of China’s hydropower project. It is being said that the proposed 9.2 BCM ‘Upper Siang’ project on the Siang river will be able to take the excess water discharge load and in case of any deficit, it can even store water.

According to Mehra, during monsoon season, Brahmaputra’s 90% water comes through its tributaries in India due to the abundant rainfall in the northeast part of the country. It is only during the winter season that the Siang river gets its 80% water from the upper stretches as glaciers become the main source. According to another senior official of the Jal Shakti Ministry, since the 1980s, the project has been under discussion, further pointing out hindrances in the project’s execution.

Many chin villagers have started to cross into Mizoram for refugee due to the violence in Myanmar. The mizos in Mizoram are actually part of the wider chin caste. "Mizo" is their "Indian" identity.

The generals in Myanmar have become very brazen and are not fearful. This raises speculations that they are operating under PLA assurances.

Mizoram CMs focus on Myanmar is worrying.

The chin(mizo) caste has a bad social reputation. They are disliked by the burmese. In Mizoram, they have raided bru people areas and evicted them in the meanest manner. They've done the same with chakma people. The behaviour is very wild. The kukis too are part of the chin caste and they had conflicts with nagas who eventually chased them out into the mountains of Manipur. Now the kukis claim to be native to Manipur and create headache for the ruling meitei people.

Throughout histroy, the burmese had been an open society. Many non-burmese from SEA wondered through their lands and settled in the jungles there, establishing their own communities. British colonialism introduced more castes and brought religion into the mix. After the end of colonialism, the burmese have woken up and started taking command of their inheritance. On their radars are the many "alien" tribes/castes that live in their forrest terrains.

Imphal, Agartala to get international airports.

Two more international airports will be added in northeastern states, at Imphal and Agartala, with the aim of increasing connectivity in the region, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said on Saturday.

Singh, who is the Minister of State for Development of North Eastern Region, said the airport at Itanagar will be functional by the end of the year and that a facility is also coming up at Kohima.

"At present, there is an international airport in Guwahati. We are planning to have airports in Imphal and Agartala as well," Singh said, speaking at an event organized by 'Amazing Namaste'.

Singh admitted that he had never visited the North East till taking charge of the ministry, but in all his interactions since then, connectivity in the region was flagged as a major issue. “Now the golden period of North East region has come. When India looks at strengthening the economy in the postCOVID times, it will start looking for regions where you have unexplored avenues,” he said.

“Before 2014, NE was known for blockades, insurgency, encounters, for killings...a leader in Manipur who used to sit in protest with a tube in her mouth has vanished,” the minister said without naming the activist.

Over the course of the pandemic, Amazing Namaste, which calls itself as a community initiative to get tales of the North East, organized a series of 100 talks.

Convenor of the forum, Atul Kulkarni, said developing entrepreneurship in the region and capacity building will be the focus from here on. Union Culture and Tourism Minister Prahlad Singh Patel said tourism is all about perceptions of a destination and alleged that there is a “conspiracy” to run down India.

He also alleged that previous governments in the Centre were wary of China's threat due to which there was a delay in inaugurating a ready railway line in Arunachal Pradesh, which was eventually inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, after coming to power in 2014.

What kind of nuttiness is this now .
At least six Assam Police personnel were killed after the old boundary dispute between Assam and Mizoram exploded in violent clashes at a contested border point on Monday.

In October last year, residents of Assam and Mizoram had clashed twice in the space of a week over territory, in which at least eight people were injured and a few huts and small shops were torched.

The violence spotlights the long-standing inter-state boundary issues in the Northeast, particularly between Assam and the states that were carved out of it.In the October 9 incident, according to Mizoram officials, the land claimed by Assam has been cultivated for a long time by residents of Mizoram.

The Karimganj DC, Anbamuthan MP, however, said that although the contested land was historically cultivated by Mizoram residents, on paper it fell within the Singla Forest Reserve that is under Karimganj’s jurisdiction. Anbamuthan had told The Indian Express that the issue was being resolved.
Mizoram borders Assam’s Barak Valley; both border Bangladesh.

Mizoram’s civil society groups blame “illegal Bangladeshis” (alleged migrants from Bangladesh) on the Assam side. “Illegal Bangladeshis are creating all this trouble. They come and destroy our huts, cut our plants and this time pelted stones on our policemen,” said B Vanlaltana, president of the students’ union MZP (Mizo Zirlai Pawl).

HBS has claimed that Mizoram police are responsible for the firing in which 5 have been killed & 80 injured.

However there are some videos of men in civilian cloths opening fire. Also Mizo police celebrating after the firing.

Chances of millitants infiltrating the situation cannot also be ruled out.

If this is not depressing enough, both CMs were waging a conversation on twitter regarding this as though it is the only means of communication.

Depressing, overall.

Would you have a link to the celebratory fire video?

The issue is that we have carved out a state for them and they are not content with the boundaries assigned. They are creating trouble for the more peaceful tribes of India and instead of reacting with an iron fist, we are appeasing their wild/barbarian traits by agreeing to resettle aggrieved tribes elsewhere.

How different is this from KMs chasing out dharmics from Kashmir in the 90s? This something that keeps playing out all over India and even with a BJP government in the centre, the least they could have done is reassure the dharmic Ahomiyas of support.

This will not end well.

The video is available on social media.

I think it might not be proper to share that here.

Imagine, a state agency celebrating the gunning down of their compatriots from another state. I understand that this is not the first time that such an event has happened in those parts.

it looks like TMC is trying to expand in the north east as BJP is the one that is growing there and Congress seems extinguished. there are reports of Mamatha's nephew going to Tripura to get everyone on the same plank against BJP. The elections for Tripura are in Feb 2023. Seems the time for Prashant kishore's team to camp and try to find out the fault lines. At the end he will bring soft hindutva to split Hindus and consolidation of rolers/ropers to win with a sprinkling of freebies.

China sent assassins to kill the Myanmar UN Ambassador to give the Myanmar military takeover legitimacy.

Though the military has taken over the country and "fired" the UN Ambassador, he remains recognized at the UN as Myanmar's rightful Ambassador.

Myanmar's military and China both want him replaced and are apparently trying to kill him.

5 soldiers including a Assam Rifles Col killed in Manipur. The attack took place in Churachandpur where terrorists ambushed the Assam Rifles CO's convoy killing 5 and severely injuring 8 yr old child (some say the child has passed now) of the deceased Colonel. The recent incidents in the NE has China written all over it. I hope we extract 10x cost from the terrorists . Om Shanti.

^ Sickening. No reason or justification for it. What exactly is the 'alienation' or 'resentment towards the policy of the central government' or 'retaliation for human rights violations under AFSPA' that brought this about? What cultural suppression, what severe displacement or blatant economic exploitation involving transfer of resources or capital from that region to Delhi? There better be some retaliation against whomever is responsible.

Persecution complex is such a simple but yet such a powerful drug. Human beings are individuals by nature driven by constant fear, it just takes a spark to ignite the separatist feeling and push people into a persecution complex . The leftists and islamists are masters at exploiting this fear and stoking trouble.

"Persecution complex is such a simple but yet such a powerful drug." The explanation must be this, perhaps with a little lucre thrown in by some paymaster. The interesting thing about TIbet, is that all the reasons political commentators offer to explain, mitigate or even in some cases, justify, a militant/terrorist action, apply a 100 times. All the boxes are checked- alienation, resentment, cutural suppression, human rights violations, displacement, economic exploitation by one group( the Han) over another.. There is no persecution complex, this has happened, is actually happening. Without so much a one major retaliation. India, which can go out of its way to accommodate different languages and ethnicities, and is not doing any of the things China is, suffers time and again with ridiculous incidents like today's.

I think this summarizes the problem quite nicely.

Creates the illusion that fascist India must've done something alarming to compensate in such a manner.

Strange that even major incidents don't get discussed much on this forum anymore except for covid.

13 civilians killed in Nagaland in what the army called a case of mistaken identity. Violence has engulfed the state and the opposition is predictably pouring fuel on fire.

Looks like a soldier is dead too after the Assam Rifles base was attacked and set fire by an irate mob.

Toll at 17 now with 1 soldier KIA, situation is reported tense throughout the region. This cannot be an isolated incident, the Assam and Tripura border clashes, the ambush of colonel and his family in Manipur and now the situation in Nagaland, this has the Chinese fingerprint all over it.

How do Pakistan, China and America find it so easy to light fires in our country? People are willing to give hate speeches and riot on the drop of a hat.

Cargo ship sails from Patna to Pandu heralding a new age of logistics for Assam.

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and AYUSH, Sarbananda Sonowal flagged off an inland waterway vessel MV Lal Bahadur Shastri from Patna to Guwahati on Saturday. The vessel which started its journey from Patna is carrying 200 Metric Tonnes of foodgrains headed for Pandu in Guwahati & will travel via Bangladesh to reach the destination by early March, 2022.

The minister also laid the foundation stone for construction of Kalughat intermodal terminal at Saran in Bihar on National Waterway - 1 (river Ganga).

The vessel starts its sail on National Waterway-1 (river Ganga) through Bhagalpur, Manihari, Sahibganj, Farakka, Tribeni, Kolkata, Haldia, Hemnagar; Indo Bangladesh Protocol (IBP) route through Khulna, Narayanganj, Sirajganj, Chilmari and National Waterway-2 through Dhubri, and Jogighopa covering a distance of 2,350 km.

The vessel will take about 25 days to cover the entire voyage and is expected to reach Pandu in Guwahati by early March.

This historic feat will usher a new era of growth for all the states of Northeast India, a government statement said.

The waterways will cut through the landlocked access which has been crippling development in the region for long. The waterways not only remove this geographical hindrance on the road of progress in the region but also provides an economical, swift and convenient transportation for the businesses and people of the region.

In line with the “Act East" policy of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW) has taken up several infrastructure projects on National Waterway-1, Indo-Bangladesh Protocol route, and NW2, through the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI). These steps will improve the connectivity with North Eastern Region (NER) through waterways. The Government has undertaken the ambitious Jal Marg Vikas Project (JMVP) with an investment of about Rs. 4600 crore for the capacity augmentation of NW-1 (river Ganga) for safe and sustainable movement of vessels upto 2000 tonnes.

Speaking on this landmark moment, Sonowal, said, “This is a historic moment for all of Northeast as we embark to reap the benefit of the most seamless cargo transportation through Brahmaputra. This is not just a journey from Patna to Pandu but it is a journey of unfulfilled desires & aspirations to reach out to a wider world via waterways. The opportunity for the people of Assam & Northeast is tremendous."

Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) aims at running regular scheduled services on these routes. The Protocol on Inland Water Transit and Trade (PIWTT) between India and Bangladesh allows mutually beneficial arrangements for the use of their waterways for the movement of goods between the two countries by vessels of both countries.

National Waterway-1 (River Ganga) is connected to National Waterway-2 (River Brahmaputra) and National Waterway-16 (River Barak) through Indo-Bangladesh Protocol (IBP) routes. To improve the navigability, two stretches of IBP routes, i.e., Sirajganj-Daikhowa and Ashuganj-Zakiganj are also being developed at a cost of Rs. 305.84 crores on an 80:20 share basis (80% being borne by India and 20% by Bangladesh). The development of these stretches is expected to provide seamless navigation to NER via the IBP route. The contracts for dredging on the two stretches for providing and maintaining requisite depth for a period of seven years (from 2019 to 2026) are underway.

Its good and bad. Good to have a supply route to NE. Bad to create dependency with BD. Opens up a bargaining chip/blackmail point for future BD Govts. Sheik Hasina won't be around forever, replacement is unlikely to be as focused on keeping jihadis under check.

Infra Devt in north east through better road connectivity through Indian territory to all the 7 sisters must continue strongly.

What a missed opportunity to widen chicken's neck in 1971 ! Oh well !!
