OARN - I wonder if it is possible for the IA or other officially or unofficially affiliated bodies to move into Nepal for relief ops, and possibly never leave.

Is India ready to go in with a $10+ billion aid for reconstruction and setting up institutions. Then maybe one can talk, even if there is resistance from some quarters there. Every destruction is an opportunity to re-build, is the current GoI game for it.

unofficial estimates say around 65 people might have died in everest base camp alone, there could be other base camps of other mountains unaccounted for. along with the sherpa revolt and fight with foreigners over working conditions and risk, this effectively probably ends the rampant commercialization of mountaineering there for some time.

it might be better to leave the 8000ers alone to heal for 10 years.....enough people have trampled all over them even in winter in the quest for glory and new records. like an army of insignificant ants climbing up the back of a old elephant people climb and say they have 'conquered' these ancient gods who have lived for aeons indifferent to the rise and fall of empire.

Nepal truly needs to invest in better roads, link itself with our rail network from UP and Bihar if only as Spurs to suitable spots and invest in education and healthcare which remain the poorest in south asia.
a section of fat kats are probably scamming all the gains from the tourism and mountaineering industry and leaving scraps for the rest.
developing some hydro power and selling it to india might also gain revenue.

despite tall claims of tunneling under mt everest from tibet side to bring the fruits of shenzhen to kathmandu, there is really nothing much the cheen can or want to do to improve Nepal's poverty....there aint no shenzhen across the border for nepalis to go and work in.

A lot of Nepalis slave in Qatar and KSA and are treated like cattle -- clearly doing manual labour or other hard jobs. Talked to a couple of them on a flight to India....life is not pretty for them. Hordes of them die under extreme slave like conditions in Qatar and the lucky ones are being herded around by evangelical "human rights" groups from the USA (most of them are illiterate and appreciate the help provided, so I am not disparaging the groups helping them).

There might be a good time for "a serious charcha" when dust settles. But the AAPturds, jejusbhaiwadis, maoUnkleWadis and the rest wont allow it. Its a decent set of people being pillaged, and if this brings up a bit of dust in the long term to discomfort the rulers it might not be a bad thing.

What is all this crap about christianity wrt the earthquake? You thought a proof was necessary to show a co-relation between natural disasters and evangelical missions?

Was this breaking news more important than a quake that has killed thousands?

Death toll has crossed 2000.

Nepal earthquake: The history and why quakes happen in the Himalayas
Nepal has suffered four earthquakes of a magnitude greater than 6.0 in the past century
Despite being located on the boundary of two major tectonic plates, Nepal has suffered relatively few large earthquakes in recent history.
The junction of the India and Eurasia tectonic plates is the cause of earthquakes in the Himalayan region.

The Indian plate is moving north under the Eurasian plate at a rate of 45mm a year, in a process which is known as “thrust fault”.

US Geological Survey seismologist, Paul Earle, explains “this is what builds the Himalayan mountain range”.

It is this “thrust fault” which caused the latest devastating earthquake. The risk now is there will be deadly landslides, given the steep slopes across the region.

vishal,

And later no one will believe the respekted TFTA would act this way. Total pledged aid $6m. Of which $1m from the glorious world leader. On the ground? 62 chinese. What is there to collate.

First 48-72 hours are real important. And no one is digging beyond bhaktapur and kathmandu. Accept the outcome.

1. "Haiti" January 12, 2010 Haiti 100,000–316,000 7.0 Estimates vary from 316,000 (Haitian government) to 222,570 (UN OCHA estimate)[23] to 158,000 (Medicine, Conflict and Survival) to between 85,000 and 46,000 (report commissioned by USAID).[24][25]

2. Kashmir" October 8, 2005 Muzaffarabad, Pakistan 100,000[35] 7.6

3. "Tangshan" July 28, 1976 Hebei, China 242,769[16][17] 7.8

What do you think the 2000 represents? The inevitable is unavoidable. And accounting isnt disgusting, actions are. The great and powerful arent even picking up their own kids from their vacations.

Aftershocks will be MANY. For days and even weeks. 6+ this week ought to be considered normal.

This is nepal thread, the jesusWadi material belongs here. Take out your angst at them.

Disaster-niti is discussed elsewhere in the disaster thread. And there is a lot of money grabbing going on, so that cant be a clean account either.

No. No. I had asked for EJ links earlier. Besides, its not as if what Shreeman is doing is all that wrong - its surely raising the just anger in you and me and at least helps in that. We could surely do something about it - like answer the call of Aginmitra and spare a few USD / EUR , INR etc etc or go help in doing service or at least help in ensuring that the EJ idiots dont win.

--
Though it does seem like EJ isn't not the story and we should conc on Nepal tragedy, IMHO the Indian govt / UN etc are at that - its perhaps us more commoners who could thwart the EJ threat and we should take it upon ourselves to trash the idiots out and make them less mainstream. No?

Indian contingent is now 10 fixed wing + 10 rotary -- all types + civilian. It wont matter though, for this scale. There might be 100k wanting to get out in all. And a very difficult casualty count.

Also, Nepal has formally invited china. That means PLA now. That will complicate things later.

This number is almost impossible to believe. Maybe, you encountered a bad crowd. What can be said about Nepal is that it lacks a self-aware, sophisticated political and intellectual culture, like India. There's not enough self-criticism, open debate on issues, different perspectives, mature self deprecation and so on. It's largely emotion and tribalism, tempered by the intrinsic inclusivity of Hindu theology. But that emotion and tribalism isn't necessarily anti-India, it could be based on the godfathers who instigate it. It can just as well be turned against any perceived "villain" of the day.

This is a running joke.

The tweets were/are all glorifying C17 and C130s as magical udan khatolas. Not disclosing the civilian craft, the fennecs, dhruvs, An32s, Il76s and Mi17s as doing anything. It was all: C17 and C130 best money ever spent, worth its weight in gold. Like they fly themselves and produce oxygen while doing so. So in sashtang pranaam to the TFTA technology, everything is a C17 now.

Flying to kathmandu was never a problem. The workhorses from punjab are still doing just as much as the hindon birds. And all are working only due to IAF pilots. So what gives with this utterly ridiculous puja of the names C17 and C130?

Nepal Disaster Relief Appeal
Sewa Supporters,
Text Box: To see a Video of the devastation caused by earthquake click hereIn the worst disaster to hit Nepal in the last 100 years, an earthquake measuring 7.9 on Richter scale has caused massive devastation in Kathmandu and the northwest region of Pokhara. The fury of nature in this Himalayan country has been so devastating and deadly, that the tremors flattened everything – revered ancient shrines, homes, apartment buildings, cars, and people. Preliminary estimate pegs the loss of life to be at 1000 at the moment. Fears are that the casualties may rise to 10,000 as rescue workers work their way through the debris. Triggered avalanches in the Himalayas point to casualties there.
In addition to the region encompassing Nepal, Northern districts of Bihar (Champaran region), Mithilanchal (districts Dharbhanga, Madhubani etc,), Patna district, Munger Division (south of Ganges), West Bengal, Eastern Uttar Pradesh and Sikkim.
In this moment of unspoken tragedy and human suffering, Sewa International appeals to everyone to open your hearts and wallets to help us serve these people under distress. The relief efforts will continue for weeks and months to come. Through its sister organization, Sewa International, Nepal, and its volunteers on ground, your contributions will reach the affected people directly to provide support.
Sewa has released $10,000 (ten thousand dollars) towards immediate relief. Donate generously at www.sewausa.org or call us at 708-USA-SEWA or email at info@sewausa.org.

From past history, I am slightly wary of Nepal. They have earlier shown Paquish behavior of selling their loyalty and friendship to the highest bidders with unreasonable hate towards India.
If we help them, they might just take it, and then use "insufficient help" as a reason to hate us more.
